This invention relates to a door latch, suchv as used in French doors, screen doors, etc., and it also relates to a door latch which may be used as a night latch and the like.
The object olf the present invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of door latches; to provide a door latch which may be installed in a door with a minimum of skill. andl eiort; to provide a door latch which may be installed in a comparatively thin door, such as a screen door, a French door, etc.; to prov-ide a door latch which is adjustable to take care of doors of varying thickness; to provide a door latch which permits centralization of the bolt -or latch with relation to the edge of the door; to provide a door latch which is reversible to take care of rightand left-hand doors; to provide a door latch whichconsists of two separable units, to-wit, a bolt or latch unit and a latch actuating unit; to provide a door latch structure whichfprmits a rigid interlock between the two units. when assembled in a door; to provide an interlock which is simple in construction .and which insures proper alignment and co-action between the working parts; and further to provide a door latch whichmay be key or knob actuated or both, as conditions may demand.

This plate is best illustrated in Figure 6.
The inner end of the anchor plate is provided. 'with a shank 11 which extends through the plates 8 and 9 and it is riveted or otherwise secured thereto. The inner end of the latch bar 6 also extends through the plates 8 anK 9 and pivotally attached to the latch bar as at 11 is a rollback crank generally indicated I at 12, this crank being best illustrated in Figures 1, `3 and 5. The rollback crank consists of two web members, as shown, which are tied together at the bottom by a cross piecev 13. The lower ends of the webs are slotted, as shown at 14, to receive a spindle bar 15, as will hereinafter Abe described. The upper ends of the webs are perforated to receive the pivot pin 11 and the inner end of the latch d bar isvertically slotted to take care of the arcular movement of the rollback crank. An ordinary door, by the way, in order to be prepared for the reception of the latch unit and the latch actuating unit need only have two,` holes bored therein, one holesuch as indicated at l) which passes transversely* through the door and 'a second hole,'such as indicatedat E, lwhich is disposed at right angles thereto, i-t being drilled or bored through the edge of the door. In the presentv instance both forms are illustrated. By referring to Figures 2v and 7'it willbe noted thata pin tumbler type-of key actuatedflock' is illus-l 19 which may be rotated when the proper key is inserted, ,such as shown at 20a inFigure 7. The cam `plate in this instance is best illustrated' in .Figures2 and 10V and it cooperates with a driver "plate 20` (see Figure'9) to rotate the spindle bar15 (see Figures 2' and 8).
The assembly of the cam plate, the driver plate and-the spindle is best showrf in Figure l2, i. e., the cam plate is secured by vmeans of screws 21 and lugs 22 to the inner end of the cylinder plug. It makes no diierence whether the spindle bar is rotated byA the lkey mechanism orv by the, knob or handle 16. In eitherinstance rotation of-the spindle causes the rollback to swing in the direction of arrow a (see Figure 3). This causesretraction of the retractor bar and the latch 5 and compression of the spring 7 thus permitting vopening of the door. '0n the other hand, when either the key or the knob is released, the spring will extend and the parts will move back to normal position.

The interlock formed by the'posts30 and 31 and the anchor plate is exceedingly important. First of all it is simple; secondly, between the two lock formed insures perfect alignment and lco-action of the working parts.
The mechanism as a whole is exceeding-ly simple and as such will not require skilled mechanics when installing and assembling the same. While Figures l, 2 3 and 7 illustrate a key-actuated mechanism on one side of the door and a knob mechanism on thel other, it is obvious that knobs may be employed on both sides, for instance asv shown in Figure 4. The spindle may be square or, 'iat in cross-section, as desired.. The spindle shown at 40 is square in cross-section and the opening in the lower end of the rollback crank would then be the same. The spindle would be vsecured to the handle 16 while the opposite handle 16a would merely be provided for the recess such as shown at 41 for its reception.
` The handle 16 and the spindle 40 would be permanently attached to the outer escutcheon while the handle 16a only would be permanently secured to the inner escutcheon plate; otherwise the mechanism would be identical to that illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, i. e., the same or identical latch unit B would be employed and the outery escutcheon plate would carry the screw posts 30 and 31, while the inner escutcheon plate would carry the' securing screws Another important feature to be noted is the fact that thefkey-actuated unit to which the posts 30 and 31 are secured may be 1n serted through the anchor plate from either side of the door. This fact renders the latch unit, as a whole, reversible and as such permits installation in rightand left-hand doors. as the case may be. y
While certai features of the present ini vention are more or less specifically described, 'I wish 1t understood that various changes may be resorted to lwithin the scope of the appended claims; similarly, lthat the materials and finishes of the several parts elnployed may besuch as the manufacturer may a .latch bar connected with the decide .or varying conditions or uses may demand.
pI-Iaving thus described my invention, what Iclalm and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 1. In a door latch of the character described, a latch unit and a latch actuating' end of the latch housing,

a latch housing, a latch projecting through the outer end thereof, an anchor plate`secured to the inner end of the latch housing,
a latch. bar connected 'with the latch and projecting through the inner end of the latch housing, a rollback crank pivotally attached to the inner end of the latch bar, said rollback crank beingperforated, to receive a spindle bar and said anchor plate being perforated to receive interlocking members, a latch actuating unit disposed at right angles tothe latch unit and the anchor plate, a spindle bar on the latch actuating unit, and a pair of posts on the latch actuating unit, said spindle bar extending through the rollback crank and the posts through the anchor plate when the two units are assembled in a door.
4. In a device of the character described, a latch housing, a latch projecting through the outer end thereof, an anchor plate secured to the inner end of the latch housing,
latch and projecting through the inner end of the latch housing, a rollback crank pivotally attached to the inner'end of the latch bar, said rollback crank being perforated to receive interlocking members, a latch-actuating unit disposed at right angles to the the anchor plate, a spindle bar on the latch actuating unit, a pair of posts on the latchv bar.

In a device of the character described, a cylinder barrel, a cylinder plug, key-actuated means for imparting rotary motion to the cylinder plug, a cam plate secured to thel cylinder plug, a driver plate secured to the cam plate and partially rotatable independlatch unit and ently ofrthe. cam plate, the cylindery plug K' and the cam member on the cam' plate an engageable with the. driver plate to rotate the same, a spindle bar secured to the driver 5 plate, and a pair. of posts secured to the c lindenbarrel and parallel rwith the spin le bar. n ,y i 6. s -a` spindle bar, escutcheon plates at opposlte 4m ends thereof forming a support for the `spinj dle bar, means connected with opposite ends of thespindle bar for rotating the same, -a pair of posts connected withone escutcheon \plate,' said posts being threaded at thelr op- -45 .posite ends, screws extending through the v f opposite escutcleon plate and engaging thel .threaded ends of the posts yto securethe'esl cutcheon plates to opposite facesof a door, a |latch unit extending through the'edge of the door at right angles to the spindle bar, means actuated by rotation of the vspindle bar for v retracting the latch in the latch unit, and an anchor plate on the inner end of thelatch unit and interlocking with the posts. f 25 7. In a device of the character described, an escutcheon'plate, acylinder barrel mount- 30 l ed in saidplate, a cylinder plug in said bar-V rel, key actuated means for imparting rotary movement to the cylinder plug, a pair of lugs formed one on each'side of the cylinder'ba11'- rel, anda' post member secured to each lug.
