Be it known that i, Gannon H. Bronson, a citizen of the `United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Battle Constructions, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an improvement over the construction of battles disclosed in my application Serial No. 2t 8,097, which was tiled in the Patent Oiiice on or about June 1, 1918, and is particularly applicable to the installation of baiiies for steam boilers.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation across the water tubes of a steam boiler on line 1-1 of Fig. 3, and showing, in elevation, the first stage ot building a baille according to my invention and with some of the parts, such as the bridge wall of the boiler, omitted for clearness, one o' the walls partially broken away and the flame-plate back of the same, and also showing the spa-cing strips disposed in position between the boiler tubes; Fig. 2 is a View, similar to 1, illustrating the spacing strips partially withdrawn and the plastic material poured into the space from which the strips have been withdrawn; Fig. 3 is a lor l'itudinal section showing a bank ot n. ,er tubes in elevation and a balile, which has been constructed in accordance with my invention, arranged transversely of the tubes, and Fig. at is a cross section taken on the line a--a ot Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows and with the front wall partially broken away to disclose the hardened plastic material behind the same.
I have illustrated my invention in connection with the forming ot a baille for the tubes l of a water tube boiler, which battle, in the torni illustrated, comprises a double wall of tiling spaced apart, with the space therebetween illed with a suitable plastic, hardening material, such as a mixture of finely ground tire-brick, asbestos fibre, Tfortland cement and tire-clay, or with any form of the so-called high temperature cements. The forming of a baille oit this character around a bank of tubes presents ditiiculties for the reason that the outer walls are made up ot tiles fitted between the tubes, the .tiles being diamond-shaped in 1919, Serial No. fflzl,

form and recessed at the corners to tit around the tubes by which they are supported. lt is diillcult to build up a wall of tiles formed of such sections having a uni-V tornily evenface, and when built, the wall is readily displaced. Any irregularities occurring in the wall, such as would be caused by imperfectly forming the wall or bythe wall buckling during the pouring operation, would be imparted to the intervening wall of poured plastic material. and give it an irregular torni. In accordance with my invention, the outer walls are spaced apart by strips while being built, and the strips are gradually withdrawn as the plastic ma-` terial is being poured between the walls, so that the outer walls are maintained in properly spaced rel ation;
In the embodiment ot my invention here illustrated, I hrst build up two walls 11 and 12 ot the usual tile blocks, spaced apart and fitted around and supported upon the boiler tubes, with spacing strips 13 disposed between the walls and extending diagonally across the tubes. rlhe baiile extends upwardly from the bridgewall 14. in the form here shown, a flame-plate 15 is located against the refractory wall 12, the bottom of the flame-plate being held in position by an angle-iron 16 which engages the top of the wall 14. The walls are surrounded on the sides and at the bottom by boards or other suitable members 17 and 18, respectively, which form, with the refractory walls 11 and 12, a form within which the plastic material is to be poured or otherwise lilled in. Now, in order to pour the baille of plastic,
hardening material into the form shown in Fig. 1, the spacing strips arepartially withdrawn from one side and from the bottom, as best shown in Fig. 2, to create a tree flow area for the plastic material 20, into which the material is poured or otherwise filled in and which thus finds its way to the bottom of the mold, as shown in Fig. 2, the portions of the strips remaining between the walls serving to maintain the walls in spaced relation. The spacing strips are then further withdrawn to increase the free iiow area and the process continued until the space between the walls is filled.

l. The method of installing a baille across tubes and between walls extending transversely of the tubes, which consists in spacing the walls apart by strips, filling in hardening plastic material within the space between the two walls, and withdrawing the strips the filling' in progresses.
