ISAAC O. VAN DEMAN, OF WASHINGTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,394, dated October 27, 1874; application filed March 27, 1874.
improved construction and arrangement of a post and well auger, having adjustable bits and bucket, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section 5 Fig. 2, a plan view, partly in section.
A represents the auger shaft, which is branched at a, and the two parts extend downward and out-ward at an angle of about fortyfive degrees for a suitable distance, after which they extend vertically downward, forming the parallel side bars B B, connected at their lower ends by a cross-bar, G, arched in the center, as shown. The shaft, with its branches, side bars, and arched cross-bar, are all made in one piece. D represents the bucket, made open at both ends, and constructed with suitable vertical grooves on the inside to pass over the side bars B B. These grooves are formed by offsets b b, made one on The plate Gr is, on one side of the center, pro-- vided with the straight cutting-bit h, having an upward-projecting lip or knife, 00, 011 its outer edge. ()u the other side of the center the plate G is provided with an upward-opening valve, k. v
Having thus fully described my invention.
what I claim as new,and desire to secure by 7 Letters Patent, is-
1. The bucket D, provided with offsets b b and air-tubes d d, arranged as described, to
form grooves for the side bars B B to traverse in when the shell is lifted, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the branched shaft A with side bars B B, the bucket D, bail f, and catch c', all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC O. VAN DEM-AN.
