rette Extinguishers,"oflwhicl the following is" a specification.- M I,
The invention ,relates to a cigar "and cigaretteextinguishe'r and the object of the present invention is to improve the construction of cigar and cigarette extinguishers and to provide a simple, practical and efiicient device designed for use Within an ash tray and adapted to receive the stumps or butts of cigarettes and cigars and capable of extinguishing the. same and of preventing the stumps or butts from being scattered or dropped while handling the ash tray.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cigar and cigarette extinguishing device of this character, which may be in the form of a ring equipped with openings arranged at intervals and adapted to receive either a cigarette or cigar stump or butt or both when the cigarette stump is a short one.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a cigar and cigarette extinguishing device of this character adapted to be readily removed from an ash tray or receptacle without tilting the same and spilling ashes.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing, in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views Figure 1 is a plan View of a cigar and cigarette extinguishing device constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the device, showing the same applied to an ash tray.
Figure 3 1s a transverse sectional view,
illustrating the manner of extinguishing a cigarette stump.
Figureais a similar view showing the mannerof extinguishing a cigar stump. In the accompanying drawing, in which is" illustratedthe preferred, embodiment of the invention, the cigar 'and cigarette extinguish ng device comprises in its construction, an ope frame 1 whichis in the form of a ring'but which may'be'of any other desired configuration to Man. ash tray of the desired form. The open frame is arranged within an ash tray 1 and is provided at intervals with cigar and cigarette receiving openings consisting of an upper tapered cigar receiving portion-2 and a lower tapered cigarette receiving portion 3, which is connected with the upper cigar receiving portion by an intermediate tapered portion 5, having its walls arranged at different angles from the walls of the upper cigar receiving portion to provide a shoulder or seat for a cigar stump and forming inclined walls for directing the ashes to the lower opening 3 so that ashes will not accumulate within the opening when'the cigar stump 6 is placed in the upper cigar receiving portion, as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing. The tapered upper portion 2 is adapted to compress and extinguish the cigar stump 6 and the lower cigarette receiving portion 3 is adapted to compress and extinguish a cigarette stump 7, as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing. By the particular construction of the openings the device is adapted to receive cigar and cigarette stumps and will extinguish the same and retain the same in the openings to prevent the stumps from being scattered, and the open frame is adapted to be readily removed from the ash tray, an inner lower beveled edge 4 being provided to permit the open frame to be readily grasped and lifted out of the ash tray without inverting the latter and spilling the contents thereof. The outer face of the open frame is preferably tapered, as shown, to fitthe inclined wall 8 of the ash tray.
What is claimed is:
1. Acigar and cigarette extinguishing device including an ash tray having a bottom and an upwardly extending wall, and an open marginal frame arranged within the ash tray and fitting the wall thereof and provided at intervals with cigar and cigarette receiving and extinguishing openings and having a horizontal bottom face sur-. rounding the lower ends of the said openings and supported upon the bottom of the tray which forms a lower end wall for the said openings to preventdown draft therethrough and cause an extinguishing of cigars and cigarettes, the lower face of the said fr'amebeing beveled at the inner edge be- .yond the lower ends of the openings to form a hand hold 'for removing the frame from the tray.
2. A cigar and cigarette extinguishing device including an ash tray having a bottom and an upwardly extending wall, and an open marginal frame arranged within the ashtray and fitting the wall thereof and 1 provided at intervals with cigarand cigarette receiving and extinguishing openings and having a horizontal bottom face surrounding the lower ends of the said openings and supported upon the bottom of the tray receiving portion of less diameter than the said upper portion, and an intermediate downwardly tapered portion presenting inclined walls arranged at a different angle from the walls of the said upper and lower portions of the openings.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
