CHIMNEY PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SEAVER ANDERSON HorrLANn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fennimore, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in chimney protectors, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide a chimney protector which is made up of telescoping parts so that the device is adapted to fit any size chimney whether it is round, square, or rectangular.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is adapted to be placed upon the top of a chimney so as to protect the chimney top against the weather conditions and at the same time to act as a reenforcing frame to the top layers of brick.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which makes use of doors that are adapted to be actuated so as to shut off the draft in case the chimney catches fire, thus preventing the fire from gaining headway.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, and durable and eflicient for the purpose intended.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this ap plication, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device,

Figure 2 is a vertical section through the device,

Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the device, and

Figure 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the device.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a frame indicated generally at 1, that is composed of telescoping

2 and 3, the sides 2 being adapted to receive the sides 3. The

portions l and .3, respectively, these portions being adapted to contact with the inner surface of the chimney 6. The

2 and 3 also have depending portions 7 and 8, respectively, these portions being adapted to contact with the outer surface of the chimney. The depending portions 4-, 5, 7, and 8 provide a groove 9 in which the top of the chimney is disposed. The upper surfaces of the

sides

2 and 3 are sloping so as to drain the water away from the interior of the chimney.

In Figure 1 I have shown the frame 1 as being applied to a square chimney. It is obvious that the sides of the frame 1 may be lengthened so as to readily lit a rectangular chimney. The frame is also adapted to fit a circular chimney. In this case, the outer surface of the chimney would be tangent at the mid points of the sides and the depending portions 4: and 5 would be done away with. The frame is rigidly secured to the chimney top by means of bolts 10 that extend the entire length of the sides 2 and The frames may be tightened about the chimney top by merely tightening the bolts 10. The depending portions 1 and 5, and 7 and 8 protect the upper layers of bricks.

In addition to the protection afforded by the frame 1, I dispose a protecting hood, indicated generally at 11, over the frame 1. The hood 11 is secured to the frame 1 by means of channel irons 12. The channel irons are rigidly secured to the frame 1, and in the form of the device shown in Figure 2, are curved. The channel irons overlap each other so as to permit the frame to be extended. A rivet 13 is carried by one of the channel irons l2 and slides in a slot 1a in the other channel iron. This construction holds the ends of the channel irons together. The hood 11 consists of four pieces 15 that are secured to the channel irons 12 by means of bolts 16. The pieces 15 overlap each other.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The frame 1 and the hood 11 are adjusted over the chimney so as to effectually cover the latter. The frame 1 carries doors 17 that are pivotally connected to the frame at 18.

Pulleys 19 are connected to the doors 17 and are actuated by a cable 20 so that the doors may be opened or closed by merely pulling upon the cable 20. The cable or chain extends tl'irongh the roof and into the house (not shown) whereby the doors may be 0; erated from a position within the house. The doors are for the purpose of stopping; the draft through the chinmey when the chimney catches fire. It is obvious that when the draft through the chimney stops, the lire will also be stopped. The doors, however, are normally open.

In Figure -ll have shown a modified form of the device. It will be noted that this form of the device designed for a chimney 21 and has a. transversel extending parition 22 that dirides the chimney into two fines 23. The frame 1 in this instance is provided with a channel iron 24, that encloses the upper portion of the pa; ition In this form of the device I have also shown the channel irons that support the hood. as having two sides that are spaced at right angles to each other. The hood 26 square instead of curved, as is the case in Figure 2. It is obvious that the shape of the hood may be varied so as to present a pleasing ap earance to the eye. The operation of this form of the device is identical to the operation of the form of the device shown in Figure 2 and it therefore needs no further description.

I claim:

A chimney protector comprising; a frame having hollow sides, the sides of said frame being; composed of telescopingmembers. whereby said .iraine is adapted to tit chin i'ieys of various sizes, the walls of said. fran'ie being shaped so to cover the top, inner. and outer sides of the chimney, means for locking said telcscoping: SiflQS after they have been moved into the proper position. said means being disposed within the hollow sides, whereb i' said locking means protected from the elements and a hood comprised of a plurality of members adnstably secured together whereby said hood may be enlarged or contracted so as to cover said frame.
