Description

Patented Dec. l, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BILLIARD CUE.
Application filed October 16, 1924.
7'() (i/ZZ 107mm it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. CANIAs, a citizen of Greece, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United Statesv` residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard Cues, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to billiard cues and its lobjects are to provide a cue with a tip holder on which a tip may be quickly applied to fit neatly without gluing or trimming; to provide a tip which, when worn, may be quickly removed, and toprovide a tool for removing` the tip.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a cue having my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 a section on line 2 2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating how the worn cue tip is removed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a cue having a reduced part 2 and a beveled shoulder' 3. A tip holder 11, of metal or other sufficiently strong material, has a solid part 5 and a cue cup 6 on the lower end of the solid part fitting over reduced part 2 and having its edge 7 beveled and abutting the beveled shoulder 3. The holder has a stem 8 preferably threaded and fixed to the solid part, which is screwed into a hole in the end of the cue to secure holder 4t thereto. The threaded stem is preferably coated with glue 9 to prevent it from unscrewing. A cup 10, integral with the upper end of the holder, receives a tip 11. The tip has a reduced part 12 which lits tightly within the cup and abuts its bottom 13. A shoulder 14, formed by making reduced part 12, abuts the edge of cup 10. The outer surface 15 of the tip is flush with the outer surface 16 of the holder. A hole 17 is provided in the bottom of the tip for receiving a removing tool Serial No. 743,893.
18 when the tip is worn to the hole as shown in Figure 3.
rlo renew a tip after it is worn from the dot-and-dash line position to the hole shown in the full line position in Figure 3, tool 18 is screwed into the hole and the tip pulled out of cup 10. A new tip of the proper size is forced into cup 10 so that its reduced part 12 will lit tightly against the side walls and abut the bottom of the cup, and the shoulder 1alon the tip will abut the edge of the cup. The depth of cup 10 is such that the tip therein will not be forced out by a sidewise knock. I have found from actual practice that the depth shown, which is substantially one half the diam-eter of the cup, is suicient to securely hold the tip in place.
With the holder and tip above set forth, a tip may be quickly renewed without gluing, or trimming its sides to make it flush with the holder as is necessary with tips now in use. Abutting the tip against the bottom of the cup provides a solid base for the tip which prevents the tip from becoming loose and deformed while in use.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be undcrstood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof,l and. hence I do not limit myself to the pre* cise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a cue, having a cup on its upper end, of a tip fitting Within the cup and having a hole in its bottom whereby, when the tip is Worn to the hole, a tool may be secured therein and the tip removed.
2. In combination with a cue having a reduced part and abevelled shoulder at the base of said reduced part, of a holder having a solid part and a cup on the lower end of the solid part fitting over the cue reduced part, the lower edges of saidcup being bevelled to fit the bevelled shoulder, there being also a cup at the upper end of said holder; and a tip havingr a reduced part to fit the @up at the upper enfl olf snifl holcler, there being :i hole in the bottom ol. said tip whereby, when the tip is worn to the hole, a tool may be secured therein and the tip removed.
3. In combination with a one; a tip holder secured on the end of the olie and having a cup on its upper enfl7 and a tip fitting` Within the Cup :1nd having a hole in its bottom whereby, when the tip is Worn to the hole. l0
n tool may be seemefl therein :intl the tip removed.
'In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification.
GEORGE K. CANIAS.
