Description
A. BARNA SHOE LAST July 7, 1931.
I Filed May 2, 1950 auveuto'c Wat @M Patented July 7, 1931 PATENT OFFICE .AIVDR'ENI BARNA, OF ASTORIA, NEW YORK SHOE-LAST Application filed May 2,
This invention relatesto lasts used by makers and repairers of shoes. Usually the repairers of shoes as well as the makers provide themselves with different sizes. of lasts a for different sizes of shoes with consequent expense which is heavy, especially for the ordinary repairer, who sometimes seek to reduce this expense by applying to a last a piece of leather or other material for the purpose of increasing the width or the length as the case may be. Such devices, however, are unsatisfactory in use and often lost. It is the object of this invention to provide a device which can be applied readily to a last of given size and will remain alwaysin position and can be adjusted readily to increase the length or width as the case may be. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which it is illustrated, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section of a last of usual construction but with the improved device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a view of the same in front elevation.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, but.
showing the block in a different position.
The last many be made of wood or other suitable material and, for convenience in use, may be formed with a main part a and a separable block b, the latter being shown as detachably secured to the body a by a fixed pin 0 and a spring supported pin d which can be pressed back to release the block by the introduction of a suitable implement through a hole Z2 the spring supported pin cl yielding as the parts of the last are brought together and snapping into the hole 6 as the block is brought into position, all as usual in lasts of the character indicated.
The adjustable device or seam-piece may be applied to the last at one point or another 5 according to the form of the last and the re- 1930. Serial No. 449,183.
sult to be accomplished. In such a last as that shown in the drawings it is preferably applied to the block 7) near its forward end where the forward end of the device will be held by the upper against the last and where the adjustment of the device will provide for the desired increase in width or cross-sectional area. Obviously, the device may be applied, for example, to the heel when it is desired to provide for increase in length.
In the embodiment of the invention shown the device comprises a plate e of metal, shaped to conform substantially to the surface of the last. This plate is preferably slotted longitudinally, as at 0 to receive a headed and shouldered screw f, the shank f of which, between the head f and the shoulder 7, is of such size as to enter freely a slot 6 so that the plate is capable of movement with respect to the screw. The screw is received in a threaded tube 9 which is driven tightly into a hole 6 bored in the last. When the screw f is turned home the plate e lies snugly against the surface of the last, but when the screw is turned out the plate is carried away from the surface of the last to a position determined by the width or cross-sectional area to be given to the shoe. The forward end of the plate may be engaged under the upper of the shoe so that it will be held upon or toward the surface of the last during adjustment and so that the plate will be tilted somewhat as shown in the drawings.
The mode of use of the device will be readily understood without further explanation and it will also be understood that the form of the device may be Varied to suit different conditions of use.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a shoe-last of a threaded tube set into the last, a shouldered and headed screw engaged with the tube, and a plate shaped to conform substantially to the surface of the last and engaged 90 freel} between the head and shoulder of the screw.
2. The combination with a shoe-last of a threaded tube set into the last, a shouldered 5 and headed screw engaged with the tube, and a plate shaped to conform substantially to the surface of the last and engaged vfreely between the head and shoulder of the screw, the plate being slotted longitudinally for 10 engagement with the screw.
This specification signed this 25th day of April A. D. 1930.
ANDREW BARNA.
