Y l Application ed November 12, 1924. Serial No. 749,457.
To all whom t may concer/n: y
Be it known that I, ETHEL MELTON, a citizen ,of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Childs Bed, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in childrens beds or cribs and has `for its principal object to 4provide a simple and effieient means whereby the same may be associated with a large bed.
Oneof theimportant objects of the present invention is to provide a childs bed which is adapted for slidable movement belowthe bottom of a large bed with which the same is associated whereby the childs bed may be readily set up for use, the childs bed being-adapted to be folded when not in use So Ias toconceal the same under the large bed.
" Afurther object of the invention is to provide a childs bed of the above mentioned character, wherein means is associated therewith for adjusting the same vertically so that the -mattresson the childs bed may be disposed substantially flush with the mattress on: a large bed with which the childs bedis associated. 2 A still further object of the invention is to providea childs bed of the above mentioned character,v wherein the same may be readily and'easily secured in position on the side rails of alarge bed so that the childs bed Will be adapted for lateral sliding move ment with respect to the large bed.
'Astill further Objectis to provide a childs bed of the above mentioned character, which is simple' in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated:`
' Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during lthe course yof the following description.
In the-accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like f numerals designate like parts throughout the Side of a large bed with the childs bed im collapsed position.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail ofthe track and the rollers carried by the drawer cooperating therewithfand Figure 5 is a detail perspective view ofthe f track sections. y
. In thel drawings whereinfor the purpose of illustration is shown .the preferred em# bodiment of my invention, the numeralsl and 2 designate a pair of track sections, the
same being supported in parallel spaced re'- lation vby means ofthe Vhinged connections 3 and 4; which are securedat their outer'ends to the upper portions of the attaching brackets 5 eachv of which is secured to theirespechereinafter to be more fully described.
A substantially rectangular shaped drawer 9 is adapted for slidable movement-ibelow the bed 8 and to this end, the sides ofthe drawer 9 carry the hangers l0 which support the rollers Il, the same beingvadapteol for engagement with the tracks 1 and 2 in the manner as clearly illustrated` inthe drawings. An additional roller 12 is supported on each of the sides of the'drawer9 adjacent the inner end thereof for engagment'with the under side of the respective track sections whereby the displacement'nf the rollers llfrom the'track sections ispr'e-l vented. Suitable handles 13 are' ca-rriedibyA the respective ends of the drawer 9 tofacilitate thesliding movement of the sameE with respect to the'bed 8. If
A longitudinally extending partitiony 14 is provided in the, drawer 9 adjacent the ini ner side thereof whereby a relatively large compartment 15 and a small compartment 16 are formed. A childs bed' designated generally bythe numeral- 17 :is yadapted to be supported within the compartment 15 of the drawer9 while the compartment 16 provides av means for receiving the usual bed linen or' the like forl the childs bed.
The childs bed 17 comprises a frame 18 having the usual spring 19 supported in the bottom' thereof.- The inner side' of the childsu, hed, being t.open tas Atigre clearly illustigatedf ,in tfgu'res 1 and ,1211-1 Wire" sections 2O and 21 are hingedly associated with the upper edges of the endsoftheirame ,18 and a similar section 22 'is hingedly associated at its lower edge With the upperedgeof the sides ot' the frame 18, the Wire sections being adaptedtobe supported in--anadjustment Within theicompart'ment 15 so that-the samemay be'rai'sed .tol any desired height-preferably for the purpose of lcausing the mattress inthe cliilds bed to lie `substantially flush 'with the lmattress of thelarge bed 8. The adjusting means'includes a'pair of slotted 5links shown at'24', a pairof' suoli links -being pivotally secured at ltheirlovver ends to the sides ofthe 'coinpartmentl of the drawer 9 as .illustratedat25." Thefslot in each of thelinks 2,4 isillustrated at 726 and cooperating therewith are a seriesof notches 27.' Suitable pinsor the like shown .at28 extend from the ends ofthe framelS ot1 the childs bed 17 and are adapted for slidable i movement within'the slotf2'6fo'f the respective rlinks 24 and are' further' adaptedt to be seated in-the notches 271for 'supporting Jthe childs bed at the'desired height when the same is in'use. j l` Y j l When 'the childs bed 'is not' in-iise, the same is disposed Within the compartment 15 of the drawer 9 in a collapsed position in the i manner clearly shown in Figure 3f'and the door is adapted to be supported on the track sections 1 and 2 belo'vv'y'the large bed- 8 so that the drawer 9 land the collapsible childs bed associated therewith; are entirely"'con' cealed.- "When 'it' is desired to 'use thiclii'lds bed,"the drawer 9 i's moved'outyvardly from' tli'e rlargel bedS untill' thefin'ner side 'of theV cliilds'bed is freeof the adjacent side-rail of the large bed' 8. The". cliildsbegill "is then raisedvto an operativepos'ition-,and assembled by swinging the Wire sections .upwardly and securingtrhe same in assembled zrelation. After the pins 2,8 have been set in the de-v sired notches' '27 '4 ofthev slotted links 24, the drawer 9.i'srmpved inwardly lWith Vrespect to I'the largekbecl' v'8 u ntil the open sidey of the fra'meof the childs bed'comes in contact with thesnilde rails of the"lar'gefbed. 'A further 'in vyard movement of thedraiver 9 will cause 'the childs ibelf l] to' 'swing upwardly on the-pivotsg25 `,which supports the lslotted linksu 24 sotliatthe links: 24 Will assume a substantially vertical position. In this manrener, ,the.l,ciliildfssbed will he supported in a rigid'position'adjacent the side of the large .bed 8 as in the manner shown in Figure 1. Supporting legs 29 are carried by the bottom o-t'f-the drawer' 9.o:and lare adapted to be swung into an operative position when the drawer is in its` outermost-position with respect-to the largbed 8.
As the side of the childs bed 17 which is adjacent the large bed- 8 is opened, the occupantfof the large bed'may-have ready access to'the infant or child occupying the bed 17 without causing any discomfort 4'to either person.y
VThezprovision ot' a' childs bed of the above mentioned character, which is'adapted tobe associated With a large bed in the manner above described Will'obviate the vnecessity of making any alterations to a. large bed in order to7'su'pport they childs 'bed thereon and furthermore ,Whe'nthe'childs bed is not in use, thesame may-ibe easily disposed in a concealed'ip-osition-under the large bed.
While yI have yshown the preferred embodiment'of my invention, it is to be understood vthat various changes-inthe size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing-from the spirit of the invention andy the scope of the appended claims. yHaving thus describedthe invention, What I claiml is:-
vl1.' In'co'mbination, a supporting structure, two pairs of links, one pair pivoted at each endj of l'the supporting' structure, A each link provided lWith 'a longitudinally extending slot having a plurality of notches on one side thereof, and abed 'havingpins projecting from its ends for engagement'in the slots of the links."
2. In combination, a supporting structure, anauxiliary supporting structure slidably mountedV in ith'e llirst supporting structure anddispos'ed therebelovv, a plurality of'links pivotedv to the: auxiliarysupporting lstructure, a pair-at each `end thereof, each suppo'rtinglin'ky provided With' anf'elongated slot having a plurality iof `notches to one vside thereof, and a-'bed hafvingpins atiits ends receivablein VYthe'fslots :ofthe 2linksso that it be'fhoused'vin the auxiliary'supporting structure under-the; first supporting structure, or the auxiliary supporting structure may be pulled'outwardly to the side 'of' the first supporting structure, and the bed raised by swinging the links upwardly.' l
In testimony WhereofI affiximy signature.
' ETI-IBL MELTON.
