Description

c. LE G. FORTESCUE TRANSFORMER 000mm; SYSTEM Dec. 1, 1925' Filed Aug. 17, 1920 INVENTOR izrie leflfimzza 7 ATT'ORNEY v Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
CHARLES LE G. FORTESCUE, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO WEST- INGHOUSE ELECTRIC 6'6 MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVAN IA.
TRANSFORMER-COOLING SYSTEM.
application filed August 17, 1920. Serial No. 404,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LE G. Fon- TEsoUs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Pittsburgh. in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Transformer-Cooliug Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to transformers and it has particular relation to apparatus of the character designated in which a cooling medium is directed over the heated portions thereof.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a transformer of the character designated wherein the coils are so spaced, one from the other, as to provide passages therebetween and by so arranging baille plates as to co-operate with the passages in di recting the flow of a cooling medium therethrough.
In theaccompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a transformer casing, one set of coils being'shown in elevation and the other in section. V
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view 011 line IIII of Fig. 1.
The following is a description of the said drawings and of the preferred construction illustrated therein.
The numeral 1 indicates a transformer casing of any preferred construction and provided with a cover or cap plate 2. \Vithin the casing is disposed a rectangular core member 3, preferably of cruciform crosssection, and having concentrically arranged primary and secondary coils 4 and 5 inductively mounted upon the legs thereof.
The primary coils 4 are preferably of cylindrical form and extend substantially the entire length of the legs of the core memher and are so spaced therefrom as to form spaces 6 for the circulation of a cooling medium therebetween. The secondary coils 5, preferably comprise a plurality of superposed separate pancake-coil members so spaced one from another, by means of radially extending spacing blocks 7 of insulating material, as to form a plurality of radial ducts8. Cylindrical barriers 9 are disposed between the primary coils 4: and the secondary coils 5 and are so spaced therefrom as to form inner and outer spaces 10 and 11, the latter of which communicates with the ducts 8.
Vertically disposed baflle plates '12 are arranged along each side of the coils 5 and are so shaped as to conform to the exterior the spaces 6 from the central chamber 13.
The bottom of the casing'is provided with a central aperture 17 which communicates with the central chamber 13 and through which a cooling medium may be introduced rection of the arrows in Fig.1, through the ducts 8, and, spirally through the spaces 6, into the outer chambers 14 and from there it may escape into the atmosphere through apertures 18 in the cover 2 of the transformer.
By this arrangement, the supply of cooling medium is: divided into two distinct currents each of which is again sub-divided into separate currents which do not come into contact with each other until after passing over and between the heated portions of the coils, thus always presenting a relatively cool current to the different parts. i
I claim as my invention:
1. A transformer comprising a casing having a plurality of compartments therein, one of which is centrally disposed relative to the others, coils mounted within said casing and extending into adjacent compartments, the coils being disposed to form passageways for permitting circulation of a cooling medium between said coils from the central compartment in divergent directions to adjacent compartments.
2. A transformer comprising a casing having" a plurality of compartments therein, one of which is centrally disposed relative to theothers, coils mounted within said casing and extending into adjacent compart- *"into the interior of the transformer and from which it may pass radially, in the diments, spacing members arranged between said coils and forming passageways therewith for ermitting the passage of a cooling medium tween said 00118 from the central compartment in divergent directions to adjacent compartments.
3. A transformer comprising a casing having a plurality of coils mounted therein, vertically disposed baflle plates so arranged adjacent said coils as to form a plurality of alined compartments, an inlet opening in an 7 intermediate compartment and outlet openin in adjacent compartments, and a plura ity of spacing members disposed between said coils and forming passageways therewith whereby communication is established to permit a circulation of a cooling medium in opposite directions between said coils.
4. A transformer comprising a casing provided with a plurality of baflies to form a plurality of compartments, a plurality of coils so arranged .within said casing as to extend at right angles to said baflies into adjacent compartments, passages between said coils, and t e bafiles and coils forming passageways whereby a cooling medium may be admitted to an intermediate compartment and allowed to pass out of the others of said compartments to efi'ect a circulation around and between said coils.
5. A transformer comprising a casing having a plurality of com artments therein, one of which is central y disposed relative to the others, and grou s of coils mounted within said casing, eac coil group extending from the central compartment to one of the other compartments, the coils of each group being disposed to form passageways for permitting circulation of a cooling medium therebetween from the central compartment to an adjacent compartment.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of July 1920.
CHARLES LE G. FORTESCUE.
