R. W. SCOTT KNITTING NEEDLE Filed Dec. 30. 1922 I I N VENTOR Robert W520i;
ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 24, 1925.
UNITED stares PATENT OFFICE.
' ROBERT W. SCOTT, OF BABYLON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SCOTT AND WILLIAMS, INC., 015' NF YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
KNITTING NEEDLE.
Application filed December 30, 1922. Serial No. 609,850.-
Patent No. 1,483,009 dated February 5, 1924, I,
by A. E. Page. The object of my present invention is to so construct the needle as to prevent missing of stitches, especially 1n the taking of the loop by the casting or transfer implement.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective-view of my 1mproved needle.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Figs3 and 4 are transverse sections taken at the lines 3-3 and 44 respectively, Fig. 2. a
As in the Page patent above referred to, the needle comprises two parts in sliding relation to each other, one being the loopdrawing part A with a hook o at'its operative end, while the other part B is the 'castlng or transfer implement, which is provided with a return bend hook I), and'it may also be provided with a forwardly projecting point 6 if desired. 4 1
. The body A of the instrument A WlllOl'l is provided with a butt 7 to be acted on by suitable cams, is made relatively deep and has on one side of its rear portion an open roove 5 to recelve and tail piece 6 on the back on of the instrument B. This instrument B also has a butt 8, which is to be acted on by suitable cams 40 to reciprocatethe instrument, these two instruments being. guided together for their longitudinal motion in grooves in the knitting machine dial or cylinder, as the case ide a thinned .on t
the grooves in the dial or cylinder were depended on to keep the two instruments A and B in the same plane, but in practice it has been found that this construction will not keep that nice alignment of the operating ends of the instruments which is necessary to ensure the point 6 taking. the old loop at all times correctly from the shank of the part A.
According to my invention, I provide on the adjacent edges of the shanks of the two instruments forward of said above mentioned tail piece a longitudinal tongue and groove sliding connection, consisting preferably of a tongue 9 von the edge of the instrument B, working in a lon 'tudinal groove 10 in the adjacent edge of t e shank of the instrument A, this groove 10 serving alsoto receive the point I; of the instrument B, when the latter is retracted, as shown in Fig. 2. At the same time thetail piece 6 guided in the side groove 5v will aid in otherwise keeping the two instruments in proper relation, especially preventing tilting of the instrument B. Y w
.I claim as my invention 1 1. A two-part knitting machine needle, one part having an open side groove in-its. rear portion to receive and guide a tail iece on the other, the adjacent edges 0 the shanks of the two parts forward ofsaid tail piece having a guiding groove connection. 2. A two-part knittmg machine needle, one part having an open side roove in its rear lportion to receive and gui e a tail iece e other part, while the edge 0 the shank of one part forward of said. tail piece has a longitudinal tongue and the adjacent edge of the shank of, the other part has'a groove toreceive said tongue, said groove being adapted also to receive a loop-taking hook on the tongued part, when the latter is retracted, as and for the purpose set forth.
- In testimony whereof I have signedmy name to this specification.
ROBERT W. SCOTT.
