Be it known that we, CHARLES. S. CAMP- BELL and. llVILmAM I-l. DAY., citizens oil. the lilnited States, residing in New Haven and East Haven, respectively, county of New Haven, State otl Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indexes or Ililes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates to indexes or files and, more particularly, toa device or this character in which a leaf or carrier is employed to carry or support a plurality of cards containing reference material. In the particular embodiment shown a plurality ot individually movable supporting members or carriers are used to support cards containing reference material. These carriers are. of the general type shown in the patent to Robert D. Hayes, No. 1,223,168, granted April 17, 1917, and the present invention in some aspects may be considered as an improvement upon the structure shown in that patent. Y

When the index or reference cards are mounted upon the swinging leaves or carriers and the carriers are manipulated to gain access to the cards on the various leaves, the outer edges of the cards may become slightly worn or soiled it the operator is careless in swinging the leaves, manipulating the cards, or otherwise handling the equipment.

One object of our invention is to obviate the disadvantage above referred to and to provide a means to protect the outer edges of the re'lierence cards.

Another obpect of our invention is to provide means for spacing and holding the leaves apart so that the edge guards ot' one lea'll will have no tendency to catch beneath the edge guarts ot the leaves on either side when the leaves are swung in use.

Another object oit my invention is the provision of means for stitlening or reinforcing the edges of the leaves and particularly the front edges thereof.

To these and other ends, our invention consists in the novel features and combinations ot parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In order to illustrate the principles of our invention, we have shown at 10 a suitable supporting base which carries a guide member 11 having a guiding groove or slideway ,2 therein. Hung upon this memher 1l are a plurality of leaves 13, each formed ot a frame 14 consisting of a wire bent to form three sides of a substantial rectangle. The ends ot this wire 14 are extended at 15 and are provided with ball shaped members 16 which ride in the groove or slideway 11. Attached to this wire trame is a base plate 17, which, together with the wire frame, forms the supporting leaf or carrier for the cards 18.

tegral tongues 19. The base plates 17 are provided upon one or both sides, as desired, with the guide members 20, with edge portions 21 which are spaced from the plate 17 and which are adapted to be engaged by the tongues 19 ot' the cards, to retain the latter in position. It will be apparent that the members 20.will not only serve as supporting members for the cards, but will serve as guide members also, along which the cards may be moved at will. In the forni shown, the members 20 upon opposite sides of the leaf are both attached thereto by the same securing means, i. e., by the rivets or eyelets 22.

At the outer edge of each leaf is secured a guard 23 which consists of a body portion 24 secured latwise upon the plate 17 and flanged edge portion25 which is turned over upon the body portion 211 to provide a guard angefor. the edges of the cards.

The part 25 is preferably sufilciently long to extend over the edges oli the cards as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and will protect these edges and prevent the fingersl of: lthe operator from coming in contact therewith when manipulating' the leaves.

At the upper and lower outer corners ot each ot' the leaves is provided a spacing n'ien'iber Q6, consisting ot' a piece oi5 sheet metal shaped to t'orm a hollow knob or body portion which spans the carrier or lea'tl and is bulgcd out upon each side of the same. Tl'iese spacing members 26 are provided with ears 27 by which they may be secured to the plates 17 by rivets or eyelets /S. The body portions of these members, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, are. bnlged out on each side ol the leaf so that they project to a slight degree past the flanges .5 and serve to protect these flanges against any deformity which might be caused by contact ot t vo adjacent leaves. They also serve to space the leaves apart, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, that they may be engaged by the fingers of the operator more readily, Y.tor manipulation. ll such members are not provided, it also sometimes happens that when the leaves are swung' back and forth upon each other, the rounded trent edge ol the flange olf one leali' will enter and catch beneath the open edge ot the guard flange of the adjacent leal thus interfering with the manipulation ot the equipment.

It will be apparent that the. i'ront edge ot thel base plate l? will be greatly strengthened by the presence ot these flanges or edge guards flor the cards, so that there will be no tendency of the otherwise relatively thin edge to bend or warp out ot shape. It is usual in the manufacture of these leaves to provide a hein upon the edge ot the base plate. as shown at 30, but the strengthening` ellect of these flanges is an advantageous feature, in addition to this hem. lt is, moreover', possible to omit the hem, if desired, when the flanges are used.

The guard flanges must be sufficiently7 deep, or in other words, the edge 25 must be suf'ticiently long, so that while the cards, when placed upon the leaf may be allowed suflicient movement toward the right hand or outer edge thereof, so that theA tongues i9 can be slipped beneath the et ge 2l ol1 thil gijuide to button the cards in position, still when the card is moved toward the left, as it will be' after the tongue has been slipped under the guide, the right hand edge ot the card will still lie beneath the flange, as clearly shown in Fig. di

Near the bot-tom ot' the carriers or leaves l?, suitable retaining clips or hooks 29 are secured to support from beneath the row or series ot cards mounted upon the carrier. The bottom edges of the lower cards will be received between these clips and the plate 17, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3, will thereby be prevented from slipping of'l" the carriers.

ldlhile. we have shown and described a preilererd embodiment ot our invention, it will be understood that the. same not limited thereto in all olf its details hat is capable of many modifications and variations which tall within the spirit olf the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

In an index or file, a support, a plurality of record-carrying members hinged thereto, each member comprising a base plate rectangular in shape, a frame extending on three sides of this plate, and means to connect the free ends of the frame, comprising a flanged. guard member secured at the edge of the plate, and spacing members embracing the adjacent corners thereof.

In an index or file, a support, a plu-- rality of reference-bearing members hinged thereto each comprising a plate, a frame extending along the hinged side of the plate and the two ends thereof, flanged guard members extending along the free edge of the plate, and spacing members at the adjacent corners, said spacing members and flange members being secured to the plate and to each other.

In an index or file, a support, a plu- -rality of leaves hinged at one edge thereto and having means thereon for carrying refA erence members, a guard fiange at the free edge of each leaf to protect said members, said fiange terminating short of the ends of the leaf, and a leaf spacing member upon at least one corner of each leaf in alignment with the guard flange.

18. In an index or file, a record carrying leaf adapted to be hingedly supported at one edge thereof, spacing members on the corners of the free edge of the leaf, and a flanged guard member secured to the leaf adjacent said edge and between said spacing members.

19. In an index or file, a record carrying leaf adapted to be hingedly supported at one edge therof, a spacing member on one of the corners of the free edge of the leaf, and a flanged guard member secured to the leaf adjacent said free edge and extending along said edge from said spacing member.

20. In an index or file, a support, a leaf hinged at one edge thereto and having means thereon for carrying reference members, a guard flange at the free edge of said leaf to protect said members, said ange terminating short of the edge of the leaf, and a bulged out sheet metal spacing member at one of the corners of the free edge of said leaf in alignment with the guard flange.

21. In an index or file, a record carrying leaf adapted to be swingably supported at one edge, spacing members on the corner of the free edge of the leaf, and a flanged guard member secured to the leaf adjacent said free edge and extending between said spacing members, said guard member and said spacing members being formed from sheet metal, said spacing members being bulged out to form a hollow knob.
