LUBRIGATING' MECHANISM.
' Application flled Dec ember 1.6, 1924. Serial No. 7ae,2as.
To all whomit may concern:
Be-it known that I, MARVIN R. TEnRIcK, a
-cit'izen of the United States, residing at Plain City, inthe county of Madison and State of bio, have. inventeda certain new and useful Improvement "in Lubricating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The invention as'herein shown is intended more particularly to automatically lubricate all the distinct parts and bearings of an automobile chassis and the object of the invention is to provide an improved mecha-- "nism of simplified and compact form that may be conveniently connected for operation with the transmission gear or drive illustrated in the accompanying drawings shaft of the automobile so as to feed the oil in the proper quantity or without considerable under or over lubrication.
The invention is embodied in the example andsct vforth in the followin specification,
' In the accompanying drawings- Figure. l'is a topplan view of the Ollie/$1 ervoir'and its contained mechanism as 1t.
the features ofnovelty being nally claimed.
' appearswith the cover removed.
- Fi 2 is a vertical section on the line II- I Fig. 1 looking to the left. c 7 Fig.3 is asimilar view on the line III-T 6 III looking in the same direction.
Fig. 4 is a detail in elevation of a part of the timing mechanism;
Fig- 5 is a vertical section on the line V-V Fig. 2 illustrating the pumping mechanism.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the valve plate used in the pumping mechanism. 6
' Fig. '7 is a. view partially in horizontal section onthe line VII--VII Fig. 2 to lllllS- hate the gear train from the 1118.111 drive.
.' Figs. 8 and 9 are side and interior views respectively of a member of the expansible nut used in the'mechanism.
, In" the views 10 desi nates the oil box or lubricantreservoir, sai box'belng with provided a suitable removable on cover 11. The bottom of .the box along one side has two series of holes 12 with which are connected suitable pipes 13 ramified to the various bearin to be lubricated. ying on the bottom of the box above the holes 12 is a'valvev plate,
14 (see F 6) provided with two parallel series of ischarge holes 15 corresponding in relative position to the holes 12 m the 11. and
or parts of the chassis bottom of the box so that in one osition of the plate said holes shall aline wit the holes- 12 in the bottom of the box, said plate also being provided in its upper side with a series ofgutters 16 terminating in round pockets so that when said plate is longitudinally moved to close the holes 12 the gutters 16 are. placed into position to admit lubricant to the pump cylinders as will be presently set forth. Secured in the bottom of the box above the late 14 is the pump block 17 formed witli cylinders 18 corresponding in number to the outlets 12 and having ports 19 at their lower ends adapted-in operation to alinealternately with the holes 15-and the pockets of the gutters 16. In the cylinders 18 are pistons 20 having springs 21 engaging heads 22 on the upper ends of the pistons,
' longitudinally shifted from the position shown in-Fig. 2 and the holes 15 alined with ports19 and holes 12downward pressure of the pistons 20 forces lubricant into pi cs 13 and to the bearings or parts to be lubricated. Itmay be here noted that the cylinders, or
- both the cylinders andthe ports can be made ofvarious sizes, as shown or otherwise, so
as to vary'the quantities of lubricant dis-- charged according .to the requirements of the various hearings or parts to be lubricated. v v
Journaled horizontally between the ends of the box and above the upper ends .of the pistons are cam shafts 23 and 24 adapted when rotated, first to depress the pistons and then permit them to rise due to the action of the springs on them. Because it is my purpose to operate these pistons from the transmission gear of the motor vehicle it is important that ntervening mechanism be provided for av great reduction from the normal speed of that gear. The mechanism of my invention in this respect is best illustrated in Fig.7. In. that view and also in Fig. 1 the character 25 designates the spur gear that is meshed or connected with the transmission gear (not shown)' or with a gear on the drive shaft, said gent-25 being keyed on a shaft 26 that is journaled in a bearing 40 in the end of the oil box and a bracket arm 27 secured on the box. The shaft 26 has a pinion 28 fixed thereon engaging alarge gear 29 loose on a.
shaft 80 said large gear carrying planetary 'pinions 31 meshing with a spur gear- 32 the corresponding axis of the camshaft 24;
box constitutes a bearing for a stud shaft of said cam shaft 24. The shafti30 also has formed on it a pinion 34 and a clutch member 35 to which latter further reference will be made. The pinion 34 engages a large spur gear 36 carrying planetary pinions 37 meshing with a spur gear 38 keyed on a timer shaft 39,jsaid timer shaft being jou'rnaled in the bearing 40 before referred to in line with the axis of the shaft 26; The
' timer shaft 39 has fixed or formed on it a large worm screw- 39 of slow pitch engaged bythe longer arms 41'of a forked or expansible yoke or nut, said arms being provided at their inner sides with threads complementing those of the worm (see Figs. 8 and 9). spring '42 connects the arms 41 so that they are drawn toward each other and to embrace and engage the worm. The shorter arms 43 of the expansible nut embracea flat bar 44, said bar provided at one end with a stop 44 and journaled at that end in a block 45. At its other end the bar 44'is provided with a forked crank arm 46 carrying an anti-friction roller 47 impinged by a cam 48 on cam shaft 24 as hereinafter explained. The arms 41'-43arepivoted to- 'gether somewhat likethe members of a pair" of ordinary pinchers, on a pin 49 extending has at'its left hand end a laterally extending arm 52 provided with an anti-friction roller 53 acted on by the spirally formed cam edge 54 on sleeve 55 splined on an axial extensionof the-cam shaft 24. Thesliding frame 51, slides on another sliding member 56 having at its left hand end a lateral extension provided? with'a yoke 57 that is mounted in a slot 57 on said arm and engages an annular groove in, a clutch member 58, said clutch.
member being slidingly splined on the aforesaidreduced axial extension of the cam shaft 24. The sliding members 5156 are supported on a block 75 under a clip 7 6 secured to the block. Said clutch member 58 engages and is operatedby the clutch member 35, before referredto. The right hand end of the sliding member 56 is provided with an abutment 59 against which the right hand end of the slide 51.=thrusts when the cam edge 54 operates on the.roller 53 uponthe engagement of the clutch member 58 with the clutch member 35. The engagement of the roller 53 a with the cam edge 54 thrusts the clutch memand that portion of the shaft 30' within the her 58 into engagement with the clutch 35. The slide member 56 is: provided with a V-shaped trip projectionfil cooperatingwith a spring actuated pin having a V-shaped head 60- so." that the clutch member 58 is snapped into and yieldingly latched in engagement with the clutch member 35 when roller 53 to retrieve the yoke nut 41 to start-' ing position. i 1.
I It will be assumed that the reservoir is filled or sufliciently supplied with oil. H 7
The pump valve plate 14 is reciprocated to open the lubricant discharge ports just prior to the operation of the cam shafts 23 and 24 to effect a down stroke of the pistons and to close said ports and place the supply gutters into position to admit lubricant to the cylinders at the initiation of the upward movement of the piston under the action of their springs 21 by means of a lever 63 hinged at 64 in an ear 65 at the right hand end of said plate and fulcrumed on a pin .66 on a suitable ear-'67 on the pump block, said lever 63 entering for that purpose an annularcam groove ,68- in a. sleeve69 fixed; axially on the cam shaft 23, .The two cam shafts 23 and 24 are geared together to rotate in uni-1 Son by means of gears 70 and 71 fixed axially on said shafts respectively.
The operation which can be readily understood from the, foregoing may be briefly summarized as follows:
The motion imparted to the worm 39 by the train ofgearlng is constant during the operation 'of the transmission gear or the drive shaft of the-motor vehicle. Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 the expansible nut 41 isengaged with the worm, the cam shafts=23 and 24 remain idle until the clutch member 58 is thrust by the slide 5l. into engagement with. the clutch member 35. During this engagement the two cam shafts 23 and 24 are rotated'oncc operating the pumps until the slide 51 is shifted to the right by the cam 54 to strike the abutment 59 thus releasing the clutch member58. The releasing of the clutch 58 is slightly delayed by reason of the slot 57 to permit roper. operation of the cam, it being remem ered that the rotation of the cam 48 releases the expansible nut 41 from the Worm to permit the retrieving of .theynut longitudinallyover the worm to starting po sition; Upon thecompletion ofthe' rotation of the cam shaft 24 the nut is restored to engagement with the worm 39 and the op eration repeated. During theoperationof the cam shafts 23 and 24 the valve plate '14 is first shifted't o open the discharge ports and then shifted to close them for refilling the pump cylinders. There is thus an intermittent rotation'of the two cam shafts23 without departing. from and Q4 and an operatio'n of all the pumps by direct action on them "ofthe cam shafts.
, The rate of rotation of 'the cam shafts is Somewhat'greater than therate-of rotation of the worm shaft. because of the difference in gearing the construction being such as to adapt it for'adequ'atelylubricating the different parts necessary to be lubricated for which the apparatus is installed. y
The forms of the parts. can be changed 7 the of-the invention as claimed. f
