Boston. in the county ot Suffolk, State ot Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Picker- Stick Checks .tor Looms. ot which the tollowing` is a s'pecitication, reference being' had therein to the accompanying drawings.

rlhe invention has relation to picker-stick checks 'tor looms; that is to say, to devices employed in looms for bringing; the pickerstick oit a loom to rest., without excessive shocl; at the completion ot its travel inward and outward. The invention consists in an improved and novel device ot this class. embodying' in a novel construction the familiar principle of a flexible check-strap formed into a loop which is disposed hori aontally in practice, and within which the picker-stick vibrates or swings in its alten nate movements` inward in a loom to propel the shuttle across the latter, and outward under the impact ot a shuttle as the latter completes its flight' across the loom from the opposite side ot the latter.

An illustrative embodiment ot the invention is represented in the accompanying;Y drawings. in which latter,-

As in the case o't other check devices of the same class, my improved check comprises a hanger 1 that is adapted to be secured to the lay-beam 2 of a loom, and a strap 3 which, as aforesaid, is formed into a loop that is disposed horizontally in the loom in which the device is employed, so that the picker-stick 4. shall be enclosed within the said loop and in its working shall engage with the opposite bends or turns ot such loop alternately. The hanger 1 is shown as attached to the lay-beam 2 by means of a bolt 5 engaging' with an upstanding ear 11 ot' the hanger. such ear being applied against a vertical surface at the rear of the lay-beam. One end-portion of the strap, namely that with which the back of the picker-stick 4t makes contact as the picker-stick is forced outward by the shuttle entering the correspending shuttle-box, is in tree swinging engagement with a pintle 6 with which the hanger 1 is provided. Such end-por`tion is provided with an eye 7 which lits upon the said pintle and is adapted to turn therearound. The other end-portion ot the strap, namely that portion with which the pickerstick engages as it completes its inward movement in throwing the shuttle, is reversely bent into substantial parallelism with the intermediate length of the strap. and Xedly engaged with the hanger, in this instance by means of a bolt 8 and a clamping' plate 9. This reversely-bent end-portion is interposed between the clamping' plate and the body o'l the hanger, and the end oit said plate which extends into the adjacent bend or loop oi the strap is itselt bent or curved, forming a curved lip to avoid sharp bending` of the strap around such end, and injury to the strap. The eye 7 at the other end ot the strap is -tormed by doubling back and tastening the material of' the strap, preferably around a bushing; ot metal or fiber. rlhe axis oi the pintle is disposed vertically. The pintlc in this instance is constituted. by the upturned endportion of an L-shaped member, the horizontally extendingr stem ot which occupies a, socket in a boss or hub 13 that is 'formed upon the hanger. The said member is fixed in place, with capacity tor adjustment ot the pintle and corresponding end ot the strap transversely of the loom. In this instancea binding screw 14 applied in connection with the said boss or hub engages with the said stem to maintain it in adjusted position.

Preferably 1 combine with the strap means operating' to resist longitudinal movement ot the strap in either direction. to assist in bringing the picker-stick to rest. In the illustrated embodiment o'l the invention, I employ a movement-resisting' device which acts through 'Irictional engagement with the intermediate portion of the length of the strap. This device comprises a bracket 15 secured to the lay-beam and having three CII downwardly extending fingers 12 l2, 12, substantially in the same plane, through which the check-strap is run as shown in the drawings7 so that the successive lingers stand alternately on opposite sides of the strap and cause the latter to be bent around them in such manner as to cause considerable friction when the strap is moved lengthwise through the device. An important function subserved b v the device is that of holding' open the loop formed by the checkstra-p, Still another function is that of guiding the intermediate length of the strap so as to obviate to a considerable extent the tendency of the strap to cause displacement of the picker-stick at right angles to the direction of movement of the stick, during the checking action.

That is claimed as the invention is l. A picker-stick cheek for looms comprising a hanger adapted to be mounted upon the lay-beam of a loom, a pintle earried by said hanger, and a check-strap forming a horizontal loop Within Which a picker-stick may move back and forth, said strap having at one end thereof an eye which lits upon the said pintle and is adapted to turn therearound so as to permit the adjacent portion of the strap to swing relative to the. pintle7 and said strap having the opposite end-portion thereof reversely bent into substantial parallelism With the intermediate leng'th of the strap and fiXedly engaged with the hanger.

A picker-stiel; check for looms comprising' a hanger adapted to be mountednpon the lay-beam of a loom, a pintle carried by said hanger, a check-strap forming a horizontal loop within which a picker-stick may move back and forth, said strap having at one end thereof an eye which .lits upon the said pintle and is adapted to turn therearound so as to permit the adjacent portion of the strap to swing relative to the pintle, and the said strap having the opposite endportion there-of reversely bent into substantial parallelism with the intermediate length of the strap, and a clamp by Which the reversely-bent end-portion ofthe strap is made fast to the hanger.

A picker-stick Check for looms comprising a hanger adapted to be mounted upon the lay-beam of a loom, a pintle carried by said hanger, a check-strap forming a horizontal loop Within which a picker-stick may move back and forth, said strap having at one end thereof an eye Which fits upon the said pintle and is adapted to turn therearound so as to permit the adjacent portion of the'strap to swing relative to the pintle, with the opposite end-portion of the strap reversely bent into substantial parallelism with the intermediate length of the strap and fixedly engaged with the hanger, and means coactinp;` With the said intermediate length, serving to guide the same and resist its movement under the blows of the pickerstick.
