Description

`Filed New. 28, 1924 Nov. 17
Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
UNITED vSTATES nUFUs A. InBY, or LON'GVBEACII, MISSISSIPPI.
TOY GUN.
Application 1ed November 28, 1924. Serial No. 752,714.
To all whom t may concern:`
Be it known that I, RUrUs A. IRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county ci Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Toy Guns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention provides a toy for projecting missiles such as pins, shots and the like, and which embodies an action similar to a rifle since provision is had for an explosion and a hammer and trigger action, the hammer being thrown forward by a main spring and held in retracted position by means of a lock which is released by a trigger when the gun is fired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
Vhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention. y
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a side view of a toy gun embodylng the invention, v
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view,
Figure 3 is a detail view of a portion of the gun as seen from the lower side,
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 66 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters. y
The numeral 10 denotes the barrel of the gun and 11 the stock to which the barrel is attached, said stock in the preferable con struction comprising similar side pieces disposed in parallel relation an-d spaced apart to receive `the barrel, the lock mechanismA projecting above the magazine12 as` indi- I cated most clearly in Figure 5.
A plunger 15 is loosely fitted within 'the breech of the barrel 1() and is held in place by means or' a pin 16 which passesthrough a longitudinal slot 17 of the plunger and through openings in the side pieces comprising the stock to assist materially in ser curing the same. The rear portion of the plunger 15 is recessed as indicated at 18 and grooved to ,receive a paper cap which is exploded when the gun is fired, thereby simulating the action of a rifle an-d at the same time materially assisting inthe fpropulsion of the missile. A spring 19 is se.- cured at one end' between the side pieces comprising the stock and itsk free end is provided with a hammer 20 which is adapted to explode the paper cap and project the 'plunger 15 when the gun is firedto project a missile 21 which may consist of a pin or other projectile. the spring 19 is adapted to engage a stop 23 when the gun is cocked by drawing the hammer back into viring position as indicated by the full lines in Figure 2. The trigger comprises a post 24 a guard 25 and a lug 26, the latter being pivoted to the stock and the post 24 slotted to receive the main spring 19 as shown most clearly in Figure 4. The projecting end of the spring 19 is notched as indicated at 27 to provide a rear sight which is adapted to cooperate with a corresponding sight at the muzzle of the barrel. It is observed that the action or lock mechanism is comprised between the side pieces forming the stock andas ya result the parts are lreadily accessible, and
the construction is simple and admits of ready assembling of the parts and an ex pensive production which is essential inl an article of the nature of the present invention.
What is claimed is A dog 22 carried byv v Y l. A toy gun comprising a barrel, a plunger loosely tted Within the breech of the barrel-a-ndhaving its rear portion recessed for the reception of a paper cap,v and an action comprising the hammer, spring and lock and trigger mechanism.
2. toy gun comprising a stock, a magazine disposed at the front portion ofthe stock, a barrel ttedgto thejstockand.supported upon the magazine, a piunger Within thefbreechof the barrel and having `its rear portion-recessed tovreceiveapaper cap, and anaetion comprisingla hemimer7 springand lock and trigger mechanism.
3. A toy gun comprisingastock, abarrel thereon, a vplunger Within the breech of `the bar-rel Yand having its rearr portion recessed to receive a..pap ercap, a spring provided with a hammer for operating the plunger, a vdog carriedby the:Spring,a-stop adapted -tocoact .with Lthe .dog ito hold :the spring Whenfset for l.act-ion, and a trigger mechanism for releasingthe dog .4. Atoy :gun comprising a.stocl ,-.arbarrel thereon, a `.plunger Within the breech fof the barrel, -a spring vprovided .with a hamm-er for operating :the plunger, a dogcarried by 'thespringi awstop adapted :to coaet with the Adogfto hold theaspri-ng :when vset for action,
and a trigger mechanism for releasing the dog, said triggermechanism comprising a post ...slotted for gthe npassage .of Aithe said spring therethrough and a guard carrying the trigger post and pivoted to the stock.
5. A -toy gun comprising a stock formed ,of similar side pieces disposed in parallel and spaced relation, a barrel held between said sidepieces, aplunger Within the breech of the barrel and Ahaving its rear portion recessed to receivefaipaper cap,.and an action comprising ga, spring, ham-melf, 1 dog, .stop and trigger mechanism .comprised between thev sideV pieces forming the stock.
6. A toy gun comprising-a stock formed of :similar side piecesfdisposed in spaced and parallel relation, a .magazine arranged between the iront .portion of ,the Aside pieces, a 1bai-rel .supported .upon the magazine and clamped between the side pieces of zthe stock, a plunger in the breeclrof :the .barrel 'and `recessed-to reeeiuea l,pa/per cap, a. spring provided Witha y,hammer .toicoact :with the plunger, a fdo-g `carried by the z-Sprng, a StOp vadapted .to engage kthe dog :and .a trigger mechanism, the action vbeing comprised -bektween theuside pieeesgformigng the stock.
