Be it known that I, IsIDonE DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, residinV at Newark, in thecounty of Essex and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oft-he invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art t0 which it appertains to make and use the same.

`My inventionconsists in new and useful improvements in collapsible receptacles and relates particularly to collapsible drinking cups.

An object of my invention is to provide a drinking cup of this class, which may be conveniently carried in the pocket, and which will conform in shape to the curve of the human body.

"A further object of my invention is to provide a collapsible drinking cup,`having a cover and handle which serve as supports for maintaining the cup in an open position.

A still further object is to provide a cup having a strainer attached thereto to insure cleanliness. f

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel `features herein set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, in which numerals of like character designate similar parts throughout the several views,

In the drawings, 1 designates the body composed of a iiexible, waterproof material such as sheet rubber or canvas with. its edges secured together in any suitable manner to form a substantially tube shaped member. This flexible body is creased or folded in a plurality of lateral folds 2 which extend circumferentially of the said tubular body, and which, when the cup is folded give a substantially accordion-like appearance.

At the lower end of this tubular body l, I secure by any suitable `means a bottom 3, which extends slightly beyond the body as shown in Fig. 2, and which -is provided with a bead 4 extending around its circumference. This bottom is preferably composed of aluminum and is curved outwardly to conform in shape with the human body.

The upper end of the body 1 is secured to a metal ring member 5 which is curved to conform with the bottom 3, when the cup is folded. The upper edge of the body is recessed along the ring 5 at points 6, 7 and 8, leaving the ring bare at those points.

At the point 6, I secure by hinging, a cover 9, preferably composed of aluminum and also curved in shape to conform with the ring 5 and bottom 3. On the edge of said cover 9 opposite the hinge, is a dual clasp 10, adapted to snap over the ring 5 when the cover is in a closed position, and over the bead 4 of the bottom 8, when the cup is opened.

In a similar manner at the point 7, I secure by hinging a handle 11 composed of a suitable metal and provided with a dual clasp 12 adapted to snap over the bead 4 on one side of the bottom 3, when the cup is opened and over the bead on the other side `of said bottom, when the cup is folded, as shown in Fig. l. l The cover 9 and handle 1l serve assup ports toretain the body 1 in an open posi.- tion and prevent the untimely collapse of the same.

At the point 8, I provide a hinged strainer 13 which comprises a wire frame curved to conform With. the other members, with a suitable screen or "cloth stretched thereover. This strainer is adapted to fit` within the ring 5 tolstrain the liquid before it enters the cup, and to be swungr back on its hinge when the user desires to drink.

The operation of my device is obvious. We will say the cup is in its folded position as shown in Fig. 1. The handle 11 is first unsnapped from the ring 5, and swung back on its hinge. The body is then pulled open and said handle snapped over the bead 4 on the bottom 3. The cover is then unsnapped and swung down and snapped over the other side of the bead 4. These two members retain the cup in its open position. The liquid is poured in through the strainer 13, which is then swung back out of the way for drinking.

To close the cup, the' strainer 13 is replaced within the ring 5, the cover 9 snapped back over the ring and the handle swung back over the cover. The body is then folded and the 'dual clasp l2 on the handle is snapped over the bead a on the bottom 3 to retain the cup in a collapsed position.

From the foregoing, it is believed that my invention may be clearly understood without further description, it being borne in mind that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as disclosed in the following claims.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A collapsible receptacle comprising a flexible body portion, a cover and a handle secured to said body portion and adapted to swing on hinges, said cover and handle also serving to retain the body portion in an open position.

2. A collapsible receptacle comprising a flexible body portion, a cover and a handle secured to said body portion and adapted to swing on hinges, said cover and handle also serving to retain the body portion in an open position, and said handle being adapted to retain the body portion in a collapsed position.

3. A collapsible receptacle comprising a ieXible body portion, a bottom, a.. support for the upper edge of said body, a cover, a handle and a strainer hinged to said support, said cover and handle also serving to retain said body in an open position.

4. A collapsible receptacle comprising a flexible body portieri, a bottom provided with a circumferential bead, a support for the upper edge of said body, a cover hinged to said support, adapted to snap on the opposite side thereof and to swing back and snap on the bead on said bottom, a handle also hinged to said support, adaptedv to snap on' the bead on the bottom and also to swing over when said receptacle is closed and snap on the opposite side of said bead to retain said cup in a closed position and means for straining the liquid before entering the receptacle, and forl excluding foreign substances.

A collapsible receptacle comprising a flexible body portion, a bottom, a support for the upper edge of said body, a cover and handle hinged to said support, said members all being curved so as, when folded, to conform with the contour of the human body, means coacting with said cover and handle for retaining said receptacle in an open position, and means coacting with said handle for retaining the same in a closed position.

A collapsible receptacle comprising a flexible body, supporting means for the lupper and lower extremities of said body extending around the same, a handle hinged at one end to said upper supporting means and adapted to fasten at the other end to said lower supporting means when said body is in an open. posit-ion, a cover hinged at one side to said upper supporting meansk and adapted to fasten at the other side to said lower supporting means, said handle and cover serving to retain said body in an open position.

7. A collapsible receptacle comprising a flexible body, supporting means for the upper and lower extremities of said body extending around the same, a handle hinged at one end to said upper supporting means and adapted to fasten at the other end to the lower supporting means when said body is in an open position, a cover hinged at one side to the said upper supporting means and adapted to fasten at the other side to said lower supporting means, said handle and cover serving to retain said body in an open position, and when collapsed, said cover being adapted to fold over the mouth of said receptacle and fasten to the supporting means on the side opposite its hinge, said handle beingadapted to fold over said cover and fasten to the lower supporting means.
