To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO M. Cruise, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rope-Deflecting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to rope winding drums and has for its object to provide a drum construction which will prevent the rope when wound in superposed layers on the drum from piling up against a flange of the drum.
In flange drums such as heretofore used, there is a tendency for the rope when a sec 0nd or third layer has been wound on the drum to pile up against the flange, especially when the incoming lead is not perfectly centered with respect to the drum. This piling up of the rope causes the rope to squeeze down in irregular layers and subjects the rope to excessive wear.
The present invention is designed to pre vent this piling up of the rope by throwing the rope back at the completion of each layer, thus causing the rope to wind evenly on the inner layer.
The following description and accompanying drawings set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of the Various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be employed.
Reference should he had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which Fig. l is a sectional elevation of a winding drum embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged section through a beaded flange of the drum showing the action of the bead on the rope as the rope approaches the flange of the drum at the completion of a layer on the drum; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a detachable bead; and Fig. 4t is a plan view of the sectional bead shown in section in Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the winding drum 1- has an inner flange 2 to which the clutch member 3 is attached and an outer flange 4c, the flanges 2 and 4 forming a channel between them in which a number of superposed layers of rope maybe wound. In manufacturing these drums the outer flange a will be formed with an inwardly projecting rounded bead or rib 5 which extends throughout the periphery of the flange adjacent the outer edge thereof. As the rope is wound upon the drum it will wind spirally thereon forming a layer from one flange to the other. As the rope approaches the outer flange 4; it will be engaged by the bead 5 so that the portion thereof adjacent the drum is deflected toward the center of the drum causing the rope to work back upon the top of the completed layer and preventing the rope from piling up against the flange 4L. In the type of drum herein shown, it is necessary to provide the bead only upon the outer flange. ltwill be obvious, however, that under certain conditions and upon certain types of drums both flanges may be provided with the inwardly projecting bead.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a detachable bead adapted to be attached to drums already in use. In this modification the drum 7 has a flange 8 to which is attached an annular bead formed in semi-circular sections 9 and 10. The sections 9 and 10 are formed of angle irons 11 bent to semi-circular form and provided with outer flanges 12 cylindrical in form which are adapted to be secured to the periphery of the flange 8 and inwardly extending flanges 13 which lie against the inner face of the flange 8. The inwardly e2:- tending flange 13 has a rounded bead 1 L riveted thereto, the bead 14 being formed in semi-circular sections corresponding tothe semi-circular angle iron sections 11. The flanges 12 are secured to the outer edge portion of the flange 8 by means of cap screws 15 which are provided with lock washers 16.
The action of the bead 14: upon the rope is exactly the same as above set forth in connection with the modification shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a winding drum having a rope receiving channel, one wall of which is formed by an outwardly projecting flange, of a bead ring formed of arcuate sections abutting end to end, each section having a portion overlying the periphery of the drum flange, and detachably secured thereto, said sections having portions projecting inwardly beyond the inner face of the flange and forming a continuous rope deflecting bead.
2. The combination with a Winding drum having a rope receiving channel, one Wall of which is formed by an outwardly proj ecting flange, of a sectional bead ring formed of angle bar arcuate sections, said ring sections having inwardly extending flanges overlying the inner face of the drum flange and laterally projecting flanges overlying the outer edge of the drum flange, said in- Wardly projecting flanges of the bead ring sections abutting end to end and having thereon a rope engaging bead and said laterally projecting flanges being detachably secured to the drum flange.
