SHEET METAL BARREL.
APPLICATLON FILED FEB.2, 1921.

JAMES W. McNEIL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SHEET-METAL BARREL.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented May 1922.
Application filed February 2, 1921. Serial No. 441,812.
To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that L-JAMES IV. MoNEiL, a
subject of the King of Great Britain. and
resident of Newark. in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Barrels, of which the following is a" specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in metal barrels, and has for its objects to provide a strong barrel body formed of a plurality of staves which may be easily and economically manufactured of thin sheet metal. and to provide tight and firmly interlocked joints between the staves.
In the drawings:
F'g. 1 is a side elevation of a barrel body showing the preferred embodiment of the invention Fig. 2 a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the barrel body;
Fig. 3 a perspective view of one of the stares;
Fig. 4 a fragmentary perspective view of one of the staves on a larger scale;
Fig. 5 a detail perspective view showing the manner of assembling the staves;
I Fig. 6 a sect-ion on the line VIVI of Fig. 7 a section on the line VII-VII of Fi and ig. 8 a section on the line VIII-VIII of Fig. 5. I
The barrel body is of the usual bilge form and is made up of a plurality of staves, having chine portions 1 at their ends and body portions 2 curved or bowed both longitudinally and transversely of the staves. The
- body portion of each staaie is' provided along one side edge with an integral inwardly ex'- tending flange 3 of channel form, the mouth of the channel facing outwardly.
The flanges 3 are provided at intervals with slots 4 extending along the base of the channel. The slots 4 extend longitudinally of the flange 3 a suflicient distance to receive substantial locking tongues 5 formed on the flange G of the next adjacent stave, each stave being provided at one edge with a flange 3 and at its opposite edge with a flange 6. The tongues 5 on the flange 6 of each stave are located directly opposite the slots 4 in the flange 3 of the stave. The slots 4 are just sufliciently long to receive tongues In the construction shown, the slots are wide transversely of the stave, ex-
tending from a point adjacent the inner edge of the inner web of flange 3 to the. outer edge of the outer web of flange 3. j
The channels in the doubled flanges 3 are just wide enough to receive flanges 6. In assembling the parts, the flange 6 on each stave is passed inwardly into the channel ,of the flange 3 on the adjacent stave, the tongues 5 passing through slots 4 as shown in F 5 and 6, and the tongues 5 are then bent laterally and outwardly flat against the outer. faces of the inner webs as shown in Fig. 7.
The chine portions 1 of the staves are bent laterally relatively to the body rtions 2 of the sta-ves so as to form cylindrical chines of flanges 3,
at the ends of the bilged barrel body whenv dinally extending stiffening corrugations as shown at 8.
The construction shown provides a tight joint between each pair of-staves, and it will be observed that the joint is so formed (not a that the staves are securely held against relative movement in any direction.
What I claim is: I
1. A sheet metal barrel body comprising a plurality of sheet metal staves each of which is provided with a flange of channel form along one edge thereof and-a flat flange along the opposite edge thereof, the flat flange on each stave being embraced by the channel flange on the adjacent stave and having tongues along its inner edge extend ing through slots in the inner edge ofthe channel flange and bent laterally and outwardly flat against one side of said channel flange.
2. A barrel body comprising a plurality of sheet metal staves provided with integral inwardly extending side flanges one of which is of channel form and the other of which is flat and provided'with tongues along its inner edge. the channel flange on each stave embracing'the flat flange on an adjacent stave and having slots at the base of the channel therein through which the tongues on the flat flange extend. said tongues being bent laterally and outwardly against the outer side of the inner web of the channel flange.
3. A barrel body comprising a plurality of sheet metal staves having chine portions and longitudinally corrugated body portions, the body portion of each stave having one edge bent inwardly and then laterally and outwardly to form a channel flange and its opposite edge bent inwardly to form a fiat 10 flange, the flat flange on each stave being embraced by the channel flange on an adjacent stave and provided with tongues along its inner edge, the channel flange-s having slots therein through which the tongues extend, and said tongues being bent around one web of the channel flanges.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
JAMES W. MoNEIL.
