Be it known that 1, dessert C. CI-ILADFK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Horeb, in the county of Dane and fate of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Automatic Guard for Circa i. Saws, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved guard for circular saws hap ing a novel hinged guard eleiient which is held in its guard position by gravity and which will automatically return to its original position when moved away from it. I attain these and other objects of my inven tion by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my inven tion, the dotted line position being shown to indicate the operation of the device in use;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention; and
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a curved guard frame 1 fastened by bolt 2 to the saw supporting frame 0 and extending over the circular saw, as shown in Fig. 1. This frame is braced by an inverted V-shaped strip 11 which is bolted to frame 1 by bolt 12, and to frame C by bolt or bolts 18. The strip 11 is positioned approximately in alinement with the periphery of the rear portion of the saw and functions both as a guard member and as a brace member. I further provide a front guard member 4 having an upset end portion 6 at right angles to the rest of member 4, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8. Member 4t is pivotally mounted by pivot 14 to the forward end 3 of guard member 1. I also provide a strip 7 fastened to member d by bolts or rivets 8 and having the right angularly bent portions 10 thereof extending over the curved guard frame 1, as shown in Fig. 1 and limiting the forward swinging movement of front guard member 4 while permitting of a rearward swinging movement when the guard member is pressed by a log TV when pushed into the path of the saw S, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The operation of the device is illustrated in Fig. 1. As a log or other piece of wood Serial No. 7,689.
is pushed again t the front guard member 4 it pushes that member rearwardly as shown in Fig. 1 allowing the sawing to proceed.
The guard member, by reason of strips 7 attached to it will automatically return to its norrrial guard position by gravity whenever pressure against same is withdrawn. Members f and 6, T, 11, and 1 all function as guard elements. The device fully protects the operator from injury by contact with the saw; it operates with a very slight pressure thereby decreasing the effort of the operator; it uncovers the minimum amount of cutting surface on the saw when cutting any size of wood; it is quick acting in returning to its original position and is entirely automatic in operation; wood cannot come into contact with the side of the saw teeth while being placed upon the feed table C; and the guard is light in weight, includes no unnecessary parts and is not expensive to manufacture.
What I claim is:
1. An automatic guard for circular saws, comprising a curved guard'member adapted to be fastened to the saw frame and extending over the top of the exposed portion of the circular saw, a depending front guard member pivotally mounted to the forward end of said top guard member, said depending guard member having upset end portions bent at right angles to the main depending portions, and side guard strips attached to the depending end portions and connected to each other over the top of the top guard member, whereby to function both as guard elements and as weight elements to automatically return the front guard member to its normal guard position.
2. An automatic guard for circular saws, comprising a top guard member adapted to be fastened to the saw frame rearward of the saw and extending over the top of the saw, front guard members pivotally mounted to the free end of the top guard member and depending forwardly of and on either side of the saw, and side guard strips attached to the said pivotally mounted front guard strips and adapted to function both as guards and as weight elements.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a top guard member adapted to be fastened to a circular saw frame, a t -shaped strip adapted to be fastened to the sides of the saw frame and secured to the top guard member, the said V-shaped strip functioning both as a guard element and as a brace member, and front guard members depending from and pivotally mounted to the forward end of the top guard member and positioned slightly in front of the forward exposed edge of the circular saw.
4. In combination with the mechanism described in claim 3, the said front guard members having opposite angularly bent end portions disposed on either side of the saw frame, substantially as shown.
5. In combination with the mechanism described in claim guard strips fixed to the front guard members and extending in a diagonal direction therefrom and positioned to function as side saw guard members in addition to functioning as weight elements for the front guard members to automatically and quickly return said front guard members to a normal guard position in advance of the exposed front edge of the circular saw.
6. In combination with the mechanism described in claim 3, guard strips fixed to the front guard members and eXtending in a diagonal direction therefrom and posi tioned to function as side saw guard members in addition to functioning as weight elements for the front guard members to automatically and quickly return said front guard members to a normal guard position in advance of the exposed front edge of the circular saw, the said side guard members having angularly bent portions extending over the top guard member whereby to limit the forward swinging movement of the front guard members 4L, substantially as shown and described.
