PLUNGER I l r flew... j au 41%@ Y A 4f J. H. BRYANT Filed Feb. 2v. 192s' Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITED sra'rss isaiasi JOHN H. BRYANT. 0F CHICAGO. TLLTNOTS.
PLUNGER.
Application filed February 27., 1925.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOI-IN H. lnYAN'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2621 N. Sawyer Ave., Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plungers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention 'relates to new and useful improvements in plungers and more particularly to that type which are generally used in washing machines. The main object of my invention is the provision of a novel type of plunger so constructed as to create a maximum amount of suction within the plunger' when the same is being withdrawn from the cleansing fluid in which the clothes are contained so as to cause a thorough agitation of the fluid.
Another object of my invention is the novel manner of mounting the piston or plunger within the cylinder to create an initial movement to said plunger or piston prior to the movement of the cylinder supporting the piston or plunger so as to create a maximum amount of suction therein to thoroughly agitate the washing fluid.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the plunger constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view with the piston in its uppermost position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the piston in its lowermost position.
Fig. 4L is a vertical sectional view through the entire device.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the cylinder of my improved plunger having its upper end provided with internal screw threads 2, engaging with these screw threads is the threaded flange 3 of the dome shaped cover 4. This cover 4 is provided at its top portion with an upstanding sleeve 5 forming a bearing through which the rod 6 reciprocates. The end of the rod which projects into the cylinder 1 is provided with a re duced portion 7 adapted to be fitted into Serial No. 12J/i6.
the bearing 8 of the piston 9 and riveted as illustrated in Fig. thus positively connecting the piston and rod.
Mounted within the plunger is a substantially conical shaped spring 10 the largest convolution of which is seated in an annular groove 11 formed in the side wall of the cylinder 1 at the inner end of the threads 2. Thus when the cover 4l is placed in position, the edge thereof which is threaded into the cylinder will abut the largest convolution of the spring 10 and retain the spring securely in position.
The spring 10 surrounds the rod 6 and has positioned in its upper end a washer 12 which is retained against movement relative to the spring and rod 6 by means of a transverse pin 13 carried by the rod and normally engaging the upper face of the washer. The washer 12 has a reduced por tion lelextending into the smallest convolutions of the spring 1() in order to retain the spring in its proper position relative to the rod. i
The piston 9 is tightly fitted within thc cylinder 1 for reciprocating movement and. carries an extension ring 15 and is provided in its lower face with an arcuate cavity 16. In the operation of my improved plunger it will be apparent that on its downward movement, the cylinder 1 will pass through the washing fluid which is indicated at 17 and strike the clothes contained therein and further downward movement of the cylinder 1 is at this period prevented through contact with the clothes so that the continual movement of the rod 6 will overcome the tension of the spring 10, permitting the piston 9 to move to the outer end of the cylinder as shown in Fig. 3, this movement reversingthe position of the spring 10 and placing the same under considerable tension. From the above it will be apparent that upon the upper stroke of the rod 6 the piston 9 moves upwardly on its initial movement while the cylinder 1 remains stationary until the spring 10 again assumes its upright position as shown in Fig. 4. This initial movement relative to the cylinder 1 creates a suction within the lower end of the cylinder, due to the cavity 16 in the lower face of the piston as is clearly illustrated in Fig. et so as to thoroughly agitate the washing fluid upon the various strokes of the plunger.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that li have provided a simple and inexpensive plunger ttor washing; nachines, the action ot' which creates a ina-iniiinn amount ot agitaticif` in the washing fluid so as te s iiiipzir a `greater agitation te the clothes through the fluid tor cleansing the clothesx. lvlhile i have set forth the fact that the device is particularly adapted for use in connection with washing machines7 it will loe ieiidilv rv f arent that the saine may he hand operi. en if so desired.
have shown and described the 'oi-ui oi my invention7 it will be various changes in thc details i and in the proportions: may siircessfully carrying' iny )ractce without sacrih'cing; feriti or departing` from led claims.
ntion to the fact that up 1rd stroke ot the piston created in the lower end ot' which causes the aand to be sucked throul n the n the do'iinviard movement will he noted that the air water 1s orced through the clothes in the opposite direction`r thus providing` a thc-rough cleansingof the same.
Having thus described my invention, what .l claim ie:
l. plunger including a cylinder having an annular groove therein adjacent one end, a piston nioiinted tor movement in the cylinder. a rod having` connection With the piston,
a conical shap id spring Inelnher having one end ,seated within the groove and encircling the rod;` a stop pin carried hy the rod and a washer between the stop Iein and the other end el the spiiiw'.
i iiihe'fiem includinga a cylinder having one end iiiteri'ially threaded and further provided with ai annular groove at the inner end el the threaded portion, a cover meinher having; threaded engagement with the cylinder, :i piston in the cylinder, :i piston rod in vahlc through the cover and having connection with the piston7 a spring ineinher encircling the rod and havingv one `end enlarged within the groove beneath the in- :i il e rever and" means carried by he rod 'n hearing eng;agementr with the r end i l the spring'.
fi plunger including a cylinder having` =rnai rf cw threads at one end and furi i with an annular groove at the e the tlireaded portion, a conical shaped coil springv having its largest convoluton seated in the groeve, a cover threaded into the cyl' 'ider for engi y jenient with the largest conv hition to retain the sprine i position relative tothe cylinder, a piston n'iovable in the cylinder, a rod connected to the piston and extending through the smallest con solutions of the spring and a Washer on the rod hearing` against the latter convolutions.
ln testin'lony whereof I alix my signature.
JOHN H. BRYANT.
