R. A. WADE DETACHABLE HEEL TREAD FOR SHOES Original Filed July 19. 1924 ATTORN EY Mrs STATES PATENT ROBERT A. WADE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
DETAOHABLE HEEL TREAD FOR SHOES.
Application filed July 19, 1924. Serial No. 727,007. Renewed September 12,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Ronmrr A. am-1. a citizen of the United States. residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have inventml new and useful Improvements in Detachable Heel Treads for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shoe heels and has for an object the provision of a detachable shoe heel tread, means being provided whereby the tread may be quickly and securely attached to a. heel in a manner to permit of its removal and the substitution of a new tread.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for associating the heel and tread whereby relative lateral or turning movement will be prevented, additional means being provided for yieldingly holding the tread against longitudinal movement with respect to the heel.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following 5 novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings 2- Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section showing a heel constructed in accordance with the invention, the section being taken substantially on the line 11 of Figure 2. b Figure 2 1s abottom plan view of the heel Figure 3 is an inner face view of the tread.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the body of the heel which is provided at its lower end with a socket 11, the latter having extending from its inner wall a substantially centrally arranged projection or plug 12. The outer walls of the plug 12 and the inner walls of the socket 11 are of an irregular shape andare spaced apart to provide a groove 18, while the walls 0 the socket and plug are covered by a place by means of a pin 15 which extends within similarly arranged grooves 25 metallic plate 14. This plate is secured in.
longitudinally heel.
The plate 1% is slitted as indicated at 16 so as to provide spring tongues, the free ends of which are oliset as shown at 17 so as to provide inwardly curved extremities for the tongues.
The tread of the heel is indicated at 18 and this tread is provided with a plug 19 which is shaped to conform to the walls of the socket 11. The plug 19 is socketed as shown at 20 and this socket is shaped to conform to the walls of the plug 12. The plug 12 is covered by a plate 21 which is shaped to conform to the walls of the plug and Wl1lCl1 extends into the socket 20 and provides a frictional engagement with the body of the heel, the shape of the plugs and and centrally through the sockets preventing relative lateral or turning movement between the body and tread. The plate 21 is provided with recesses 22 at thebase of its plug, the said recesses providing a substantially annular groove whose walls are curved to conform to the curvature of the offset ends of the tongues 17 so as to provlde a longitudinal connection between the heel body and the tread to hold the latter 111 place. The plate 21 is held in place by means of a pin or rivet 23.
The walls of the socket 11 and the plu 12 are provided with longitudinally dispose spaced tapered ribs 2 1 which are received rovided in the walls of the plug 19 and its socket 20 so that an additional frictional engaging means is provided.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is to,
herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended elaims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is l. A heel structure comprising a heel body having an irregular-shaped socket therein, yieldable tongues located within the socket and conforming to the shape of the walls of the latter, inwardly ollset extremities at the free ends of the tongues, a tread for the heel and a plug carried by the tread and conformin to the shape of the tongues, said plug having recesses to receive the offset ends'of the tongues and hold the tread secured to the body, the shape of the plug coacting with the tongues to hold the tread against turning with respect to the body.
2. A heel structure comprising a heel body having an irreguiar-shaped tapered socket therein, a tread for the body, an irregularshaped tapered plug extending from one face of the tread for frictional engagement with the walls of said socket and longitudinally disposed tapered interlocking ribs and grooves spaced around the plug and socket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
