j Be it known that we, ADOLF 'HUNZIKER and SAM HIRsCH, citizens of Switzerland and the United States, repectively, residing at Brookl n, in the county of Kings and State of ew York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Jacquard- Controlled Yarn Carriers for Knitting Ma-` chines, of whichthe-following is a specication.
The present invention relates to knitting machines and has for its main object to provide means for feeding differently colored yarn threads to produce knitted fabric with variegated designs or patterns.
Another object is to simplify the hitherto used yarn carrier controlling means automatically controlling a reversible yarn carrier having a plurality of thread guides directly from a jacquard card.
A further object of this invention is to so construct the attachment that it can be easily applied to an existing lknitting machine. l
With these and other objects in view, this invention substantially consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of.
parts as will be hereinafter fully described and defined in the appended claims.

The frame 10 `is formed with two vertically Vsuperposed bearings 103, 10* in which is rotatively mounted a vertical spindle 12 disposed centrally between the needle beds b, b. The lower end of said spindle 1s provlded with a member 13 formed with two oppositely located guide openings 13' for two different threads t. Projecting laterally from the frame 10, are two pairs of auxiliary yarn guides 105, 10". The upper end of the spindle 12 carries a bevel gear 14, which meshes with a larger bevel gear 15 rotatively borne in the upper end of the frame 10 and on the axle 16 of, which is fixed a small pinion 17. Pivoted in the arm or extension 10', as at 18', and suitably guided in a guide member 19 provided thereon, to extend in a slanting position, is a rocking arm 20. The upper or rear end of said arm is formed with or has attached to it a toothed sector 20 adapted to be always in mesh with said pinion 17. The lower or forward part 20 of said .arm is extendedbelow the pivot 18 and bent horizontally and the end thereof has attached to it a spring 21 xed to the extension 11 of 'the slide 11. Projectingv vertically downward from said extension 11', is a cylindrical socket 22 in which is movably mounted a plunger 23. The up er end of the plunger projects outwardly rom the socket and isV formed with a vertically adjustable headpiece, such as a nut 24, working on a threaded portion 23 of said plun er. The headpiece or nut 24 is adapted to ear on the flat bar 11 and thereby hold the plunger suspended withinI the socket 22 in normal position. The plunger is formed with a reduced threaded neck 232 projecting upwardly and carrying two clamping nuts 25, 26 between which 1s clamped a plate or member 27 adapted to project below a set screw 29 working in the extension 20 of the arm 20. Through the medium of said'member 27 and set screw 29, the vertical movement of the plunger is transmitted to the rocking arm 20. Fixed to the slide 11, is a bracket 28, the upper end of which projects above and is bent into the path of the extended part 20` of the rocking arm 20 and carries Va set screw for limiting the movement of the rocking arm 20. The lower end 233 of the plunger 23 is substantially V-shaped, the narrow end thereof being directed downwardly and adapted to continuously bear on a jacquard card 31 extending longitudinally along the path of said plunger. This ca rd as usual is composed of one or more sets of plates 31linked together, as at 312, to an endless band and having, according tothe pattern desired to be knitted, solid or slotted surfaces, over which the plunger, when moved longitudinally with the carriage, is adapted `toslide. When the plunger slides over a solid surface, it will be moved upwardlyV within its socket against the action of the spring 21 and this movement will be transmitted to the arm 2O.v When it reaches a slot in the jacquard card, the plunger will be thrust downwardly under the action of said spring and remain in this position as long as it travels through said slot.
The jacquard band as usualis supported on a grooved polygonal or prismatic shaft 32 extending longitudinally'in front of the machine and rotatively and suitably supported inbrackets 33 fixed to the main frame. This shaft, in a suitable manner, is intermittently operated from the main shaft -s of the machine through the medium ofl a ratchet wheel 34 and a pawl 35 cooperating therewith and suitably actuated from the main shaft s .and controlled from the rack shaft r in well-know manner. v In order that the pr'ismatic or polygonal shaft 32 be temporarily locked in position of rest in the range of the plunger, we provide a safety device consisting of a paWl 36 pivoted at 36 to a stationary part of the machine and actuated by a spring 37. This paWl Ais adapted to cooperate with a notched Wheel 38 fixed to one end of said polygonal shaft 32 so t at, when engaging one of the notches of sai wheel 38, it will arrest said shaft 32 in its position.
The mode of operation is as folloWs:--
Assuming a 'acquard-card 'for a certain pattern of the abric to be knitted mounted' on the shaft 32 and assuming two threads 1f of different colors guided through the openings of the yarn guide 13. Normally the' yarn guide 13 is so positioned relative to the needle beds that when the carriage is reciprocated and while the plunger travelsi over a solid surface of the jac uard card, one of the thread guides 13 will e in leading position cooperating with the needles n and forming a fabric with the thread of the particular color chosen. Vhen, While travelling lover the jacquard card, the solid surface is interrupted by a slot, the plunger entering said slot will permit the spring 21 to actuate said rocking arm 20, as aresult of which its toothed segment 20EL will impart half a turn to the pinion 17 in consequence of which the yarn guide 13 will be correspondingly turned to bring the other thread guide 13 into leading position to cooperate with the needles n. In this position, the
yarn guide will remainv untilV the plunger passes out from the-slot and enters onto a solid` part of the jacquard card. This upward movement of the plunger causes the rocking arm to swing in the opposite direction against the tension of the spring 21 through the medium of the member 27 acting against the set screw 29. y
By the aforedes'cribed construction, it is possible to produce knitted fabric of any desired variegated pattern.
It is, of course, to be expressly understood that We do not Wish to llimit ourselves Vto the details described and shown, since various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of our invention.

The combination with a knitting machine, of a yarn carrier having a plurality of yarn guide openings selectively movable to a leading position relative to' a given feedin movement of said carrier, means movab e longitudinally of the machine and capable of changing the position of said, carrier during the feeding movement of the latter and a jacquard card adapted to auto-- matically control said actuating means- 3. The combination with a. knitting machine, of a yarn carrying element having a plurality of yarn guide openings and selectively movable to a leading posltion relative to a given feeding movement of said carrier, 4means 'movable longitudinally of the machine and capable of changi the 'position of' said carrier durin said feeding movement of the latter, sail? means including 'a plunger, and a 'acquard card on which said plunger is a apted to continuously bear and whichy automaticall controls said actuating means through said plun er.

5.- The combination with a knittingl machine, of a turable yarn carrier having a .tively adjustable yarn carrier, means plurality of yarn guide openings to be selectivelj1 brought into a leadingl position relative lto a given feeding movement of said carrier, means for-actuating said car-` rier movable longitudinally of the machine together with said carrier, said means including a pinion, a toothed sector and a plunger operatively connected to said sector and a jacquard card controlling the movementsof said plunger. f

The combination with a knitting machine, of a turnable yarn carrier having. a plurality of yarn guide openings to be selectively brought into a leading position relative to a given feeding vmovement of said carrier, means' for actuating said carrier movable longitudinally of the-machine together with said carrier, said means including a pinion, 'a toothed sector-meshing' therewith and means for positively transmitting rocking movement to said sector including a plunger and a jacquard card'automatically controlling said plunger. i

9. The combination with a flat knitting machine, of a horizontally oscillating selfecor adjusting said carrier vduring the feedin movement' of the latter and a jacquard ca r extending the entire length of theimachine for automatically controlling the operation of said means.

The combination with a knitting machine having opposite station-ary needle beds, of a horizontally oscillating selectively adjustable yarn carrier fed longitudinally of said beds, means for adjusting said carrier during the feeding movement of the latter, a jacquard card extending theentire length of the machine for automatically controlling the operation of said means and umeans for feeding the jacquard card at each stroke of said carrier.
11. The combination with a knitting machine having opposite needle beds, of a horizontally oscillating selectively adjustable yarn carrier fed longitudinally of said beds, means for adjusting said carrier during the feeding movement of'the latter, a jacquard card extending the entire length of the machine for automatically controlling the operation of said` means, means for intermittently feeding said card at each stroke of the carrier and safety means for 'securing said card in operative position.
,12. In a knitting machine having opposite needle beds, a yarn carrier having a `plurality of thread guide openings and selectively adjustable to 'be in leading position with any one of its thread openings relative to a given feeding movement of said carrier, said carrier being formed on a rotary spindle disposed vertically and centrally between the needle beds, means for transmitting rotary motion to said spindle during the feeding movement of said cai'- rier including a pinion, a spring actuated rocking arm having a toothed sector meshing with said pinion and a plunger for transmitting motion to said rocking Yarm and a jacquard card controlling the movements of said plunger.
