EARL B. LEAR, 0F PHJLLIPSBURG, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO NGERSLL-RAND COMPANY, 0F JERSEY CTY, NEW' EJFY, A CORPGRATON 0F NEVI JERSEY.
DOUBLE-DRUM HOIST.
Application filed June 30, 1925. Serial No. 40,482.
To all whom t muy conce/n Be it known that I, EARL B. Lanz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phillipsbnrg, in the county of lVarren and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Double-Drum Hoist, of which the following is a specilication, accompanied by drawings. l
This invention relates to double drum hoists, but more particularly to a hoist of the type in which two relatively rotatable drums may be alternately driven from a reversible source of power by automatic clutch mechanism adapted to connect one drum driver or the other to a main reversible drum driver or driving head.
The objects of the present invention are to enable the drums to be placed close together, side by side and permit a double ended pawl to be located opposite the end face of one drum and mounted to rock or swing about an aXis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the hoist. For this purpose, the drum drivers are both located at one end of the hoist and the pawl may swing into engagement with one drum driver or the other.
Another object of the invention is to keep the length of the hoist as short as possible while carrying out the construction described and for this purpose the drum drivlie ers are preferably concentric or one outside of the other while the double ended rocking pawl is pivoted between the drum drivers so that the engaging ends of the pawl may swing into engagement with one drum driver or the other. By locating the pawl so that the direction of length of the pawl is substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the machine, the parts may be asembled in reduced longitudinal space and eflicient operation is obtained without lengthening the hoist.
The invention is shown in one of its preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the hoist,
Figure 2 is a detail transverse sectional view partly broken away on the line 2-42 of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure Bis a detail horizontal sectional view taken on the line 84,3 of Figure v2 looking in the direction of the arrows,
this instance forms a that by means of such a motor or any other suitable type of. motor, the main driving shaft D is rotated by imparting rotation to the crank E having the crank pin F. The motor has a cover G containing a suitable throttle valve for compressed air or other motive fluid controlled by the throttle handle H. The cover G and cylinder frame C are bolted to the center bearing J of the hoist by means of the bolts K. The opposite end of the center bearing J is mounted in the end frame or standard B and this center bearing carries the ball bearings L and O for the main driving shaft D.
The drum P is provided with the bearing sleeve Q. rotatable upon the center bearing J and the drum R is rotatable on the eX- tension S of the drum P and is provided with the bearing sleeve T.
The drurn P is provided with the drum driver U secured thereto as by means of the bolts V and the drum is provided with the drum driver W secured thereto by means of the bolts or rivets X. These two drum drivers may be in the form of rings having oppositely facing teeth Y and Z respectively.
The main driver, in this instance, comprises the internal gear a rotatably mounted on the center bearing J and is provided with the bearing sleeve o. Lugs c on the main driver project towards the drum drivers U and W and a pivot pin d transverse to the longitudinal axis of the machine carries the double ended pawl e between said lugs in such position that one end f or the other end g may rock into engagement with one set or the other of the teeth on the drum drivers U and W in accordance with the direction of rotation of the main driver so that one drum or the other is operatively connected to be driven by the main driver.
" The' mais driving; Shaft D is provided r and s may be provided With the brakebands t and u as desired.
I claim: l. In a double drum hoist, the combination of a mainrdriving shaft, twodrums Amounted side ,by .side androtatable relatively to the'driving shaft, yareversiblemotor, a zmain.-driver,connectedl tobe rotated by the drivingw lshaft at one end Yofthe drums, e drum drivers `-InouI-ited vat onef rend of the drnms,vfa1nd a double ended rrocking pawl, carried by themain drivery 1onan axis transverse to i; the .longitudinal axis 1- of .the hoist and automaticallyadjustable into fen `gagement with one drum driver. or the other in accordance AWith the direction of rotation ofthe main driver.
2. In a double drum hoist, the combination of a main driving shaft, a reversible motor two drums mounted side by side and rotatable relatively to the driving shaft, Va main driver mounted at one end of the drums and conneetedeto be driven by the driving shaft, eoncentrically arranged drum drivers carried vby portions of said drums at one end, a double ended rocking pawl carried by the main driver and adjustable into engagement with one drum driver or the other `inaocordance with the direction of rotation of the main driver, said pawl being pivoted on an axis transverse tothe longitudinal a-Xis of the hoist, and said apaivl extending in a plane including the plane of the longitudinal axis' of thehoist.
In-testimony whereof I `have signed this specification.
EARL B. Liann.
