CARD HOLDER AND UMBRELLA EECEPTAGLE.
Application filed May 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Arrnnosn E. OBOURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millbrook, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Card Holder and Umbrella Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in card holders which are principally adapted for use in connection on the pews in a church whereby the names of the occupants of the various pews are displayed'in the card holder, the same being preferably supported on the side of the pew adjacent the aisle.
A further object of the invention is to provide an umbrella receptacle which is adapted to be support-ed by the supporting means of the card holder so that the occupants of the various pews may place their umbrellas in the receptacle and prevent the water dripping from the umbrellas from dripping onto A still further object of the invention is to provide an outlet'for the umbrella receptacle whereby the water collected therein may be carried off, means beingfurther provided for further enabling the Water to be discharged from the receptacle in case of emergency and when the main outlet pipe cannot take careof discharging the water from the receptacle.
, A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of. the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a front elevation ofmy inven tion.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Figure dis a sectional View taken approximately on line 3-3 of'Figurel. I
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 -4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective View of one end of the" supporting strip, and
1924. Serial No. 711,416.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of one end of the guard.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em bodiment of my invention, the numeral 1' designates a support which is adapted to be secured to the side wall of a pew and the same is substantially of crucifix formation.
Secured to the support 1 and extending across the arms of the crucifix member is the back plate 2 of the card holder to be presently described. The front plate 3 has an open face and is in the shape of a substantially rectangular frame in the manner clearly shown in Figures 1 and 4c of the drawings. The frame 3 is secured to the inwardly extending portion 4 of the end walls 5, the construction of which is also more clearly illustrated in Figure t of the drawing. The end walls 5 taper gradually from the bottom thereof'to the top so that the lower portion of the frame 3 is spaced from the lower portion of the baclrplate 2 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The inwardly extending portion of the end walls 5 provide guide flanges which are spaced from the sides of the frame 8, and in which is adapted to slide the cards 6 bearing the names of the occupants of the pew on which the card holder is supported and a glass 7 is placed between the card and frame. This construction is clearly illustrated in Figure 4: of the drawing and both the card and glass are adapted for vertical movement within the card holder through the lower portion of the same. For the purpose of holding the card and glass in the cardholder, I provide a hinged bottom 8 which is hinged at 9 to the rear plate and has its forward portion engaging the lower edge of the frame 3 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. For the; purpose of holding the hinged closure in engagement with the lower edge of the card, glass and frame, I provide a spring 10, one end of which is connected to the rear plate 2, while the opposite end is connected. to the hinged closure 8 in the manner as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. In this manner the card 6 and glass 7 may be removed whenever desired from the card holder by opening the hinged closure 8 and permitting the card and glass to be removed from between the flanges of the inwardly extending portion a of the end Walls, and the sides of the frame 3.
Secured intermediate its ends on the lower ends of the longer arm of the crucifix support 1 is the horizontally extending sup porting strip 11. The ends of the horizontally extending supporting strip 11 are provided with the transversely extending slots such as are shown at 12 with reference more particularly to Figure of the drawings and the purpose of this arrangement will be hereinafter more fully described. The supporting strip 11 is also provided adj acent the end thereof with the cars 13 which extendfrom the upper and lower edges of the strip and are provided with suitable apertures 14 whereby suitable fastening means may pass therethrough for supporting the same in position I on the pew. Carried by the intermediate portion of the supporting strip 11 is the angular bracket 15 and the purpose thereof will be presently described.
' An umbrella receptacle or drip pan 16 has its bottom rounded as shown at 17 and forms around the upper edges of the umbrella receptacle 16 1s a flange 18. The
are adapted to be received in the transverse slot provided in the outer ends of the horizontal strip 11 and the same may be socured therein in any suitable manner such as by riveting the ends. Extending upwardly from the upper edges of the front portion 19 and the side portions 21 of the supporting frame 19 is the guard 23. The same extends upwardly preferably from the outer edges of the frame so as to provide a flange on the upper edges of the frame for receiving the flanged portion 18 which extends around the upper edges of the umbrella receptacle 16. This construction is clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The flange provided on the rear longitudinally extending wall of the umbrella receptacle is adapted to rest on the supporting bracket 15 in the manner shown in Figure 2 whereby the umbrella receptacle will be properly supported in a vertical position.
Extending from the bottom of the umbrella receptacle or drip pan 16 is an outlet pipe 24 which extends through the floor A and is connected to the outlet pipe of the L usual plumbing system, a portion of which is shown at Any suitable connection such as is shown at 26 is provided for connecting the outlet pipe to the discharge pipe 25. Also extending downwardly from the bottom of the receptacle 16 is the emergency or auxiliary outlet pipe 27, the same receptacle by means of the plates 31 and 32,
the construction of which is clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. The plates are secured together in such a manner as to have the plates 31 extending around each of the openings in the bottom of the receptacle on the outer face of the receptacle while the plate 32 is disposed on the inner face around each of the openings. If desired, a screen such as is shown at 33 may be clamped between each plate 32 and the bottom of the receptacle and each screen is disposed over each of the openings provided in the receptacle. The purpose of the screen is to prevent the clogging of the outlet pipe.
Normally the valve 30 is closed and when umbrellas are placed in the receptacle 16, the drippings thereform will collect in the receptacle 16 and ordinarily the outlet pipe 24: will discharge the water collected in the receptacle into the discharge pipe of the plumbing system. Should the water in the receptacle reach such a height as to prevent the outlet pipe 24 from taking care of the discharge under ordinary circumstances, the valve may be opened and the outlet pipe 27 will then permit the water in the receptacle to be discharged therethrough and out into the discharge pipe 28. In this man ner there will be no possibility of the water receptacle overflowing and causing the water to drip onto the floor. It is to be also understood that the umbrella receptacle 16 is of such height as to prevent the possibility of any of the drippings on the umbrella from falling onto the floor and thus the guards 23 further enable all of the umbrellas or the major portion thereof to be supported within the receptacle.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a combined card holder and umbrella receptacle for use especially on pews in churches and the like has been provided which is very simple in construction, inexpensive, and will prevent the occupant of the news from having to carry their wet umbrellas in the pews when attending services. The provision of the card holder Ill) ill
bearing the names of the persons who occupy the various pews will thus prevent confusion in persons locating their proper pews and places.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit'of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising an umbrella receptacle having a lateral marginal flange extending around the top thereof, said receptacle being substantially rectangular in design, a support ing strip, a bracket on said supporting strip and adapted to support the flange formed on the rear wall of the receptacle, the ends of said strip being slotted, a supporting frame including front and side members, said side members having their free ends adapted to be received in the slots in said strips and supported thereby, the upper edges of said frame adapted to support the flanges formed on the front and end walls of the receptacle, and an outlet pipe extending from said receptacle.
2. A device of the class described comprising an umbrella receptacle having a laterally extending marginal flange at its top and provided in its bottom with a screened water discharge opening, a water discharge pipe connected with said opening, a supporting strip adapted to be connected to a support, a lateral bracket on said strip with which the rear wall flange of the receptacle is engaged, said supporting strip being provided with transverse slots at its opposite ends, a supporting frame including front and end portions formed with an internal shoulder forming a. ledge upon which the corresponding wall flanges of said receptacle are rested, said shoulders being intermediate the top and bottom edges of the frame portions whereby to provide a guard extending above and surrounding the top of the receptacle, the free ends of the end members of said frame being reduced for reception of the slots at the ends of said supporting strip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
