' rocxn'r CASE Applicationfiled? may 7', was; semi-m. 28879L3 To all w honeit.ma-y concerm I Be it known: that 15, ISAAC/F. Ro'r'rnn, a citizen of. the Unitedstates, resrch-ng' at J ohnstown, inthe county :of Fulton and-z State of: New York, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in. Pocket Cases; and I do declare the followln-g tobe a full, clear, and exact description of. the;- invent-ion, suclras will enable others: sklllefd" in the art to which it appertains to -make: and use the same.
riy invention relates to improvements in 7 pocket cases of the type comprising a flat sheath open at one end, an article-holding strap passing slidably through the other end of the sheath and foldable around anend of one side wall of said sheath onto the outer side of said wall, and fastening means for releasably securing said strap against said side wall. A pocket case of this type has heretofore been upon the market, with no means however for identifying it in case It is the object of my invention however to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive improvement in the pocket case in question, embodying a name card pocket having an opening through which the name on the card may be viewed, said pocket being so located on the sheath as to cause the fold of the above-named strap, 'to close its open end when said strap is secured in place, so as to prevent loss of the card. Moreover, the view opening is of less width than the strap and is entirely covered by the latter so that the portion of the card exposed at the view opening, or a transparent covering which may be provided for said opening, will not be scratched or otherwise multilated when the folded device is being carried in the owners pocket. v
Vith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter fully described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved poclret case with the strap thereof released and swung outwardly, exposing the name card to view. 7
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the strap secured against one side of the sheath, obscuring the name card and retaining it in the card pocket.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View indicated by line 3-3 of Fig.2.
Figure. 4 transverse 4 f of Fig. 1. I y
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a fiat, flexible sheath", the end 2 of said sheath :beingl open soythat a key-ring 3 and keys. carried thereby,f or any other desiredarticle, mayipass freely into out; of" the sheath: zQn side wall 4 of; the-sheathd isgfoirmedyadjiaent the sect-ion on: line ren: n n d ea h-W t an -en ma 5 hr ugh wh c a festenin' member a ram th cam sit i e 7! Qidhahe mines:
fastening member is co-operable with another member 8 on one end of a flexible strap 9 which passes slidably through the end of the sheath 1, remote from its open end 2. This strap carries the key-ring 3 or other article to be carried in the case, and when this article is positioned within the sheath, the strap 9 is folded as at 10 around one end of the side wall 4:, said strap then extending longitudinally against the outer side of this side wall and having its fastening member 8 engaged with the member 6, so that the case is held in closed position.
All features of construction so far disclosed constitute quite a well known pocket case which is materially improved by the subject matter described below.
A strip 11 of flexible material, extends longitudinally at the outer side of the wall 4 from one end of this wall to a point spaced from its other end, the latter being disposed at the open end 2 of the sheath. By stitching 12 or other suitable means, this strip 11 is secured to the wall 4 to provide a pocket for a name card 13,. but the outer end of the strip is free, leaving the card pocket with an open end through which the card may be inserted or removed. This open end of the: card pocket is closed by 'the fold 10 of the strap 9 when the latter is secured in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that accidental loss of the card 13 is prevented.
The strip 11 is formed with a longitudinal slot 14 for displaying the name and possibly theaddress also of the owner, when the strap 9 is released. This slot is of less width than the strap 9 and it is entirely covered byjsaid strap when the latter is secured in the position disclosed in Figs. 2 and 3. Thus, even if no transparent covering is provided for the'opening 14, the card 3 willbe protected again st injury when the case is being carried in the oWners pocket. In most instances, I prefer to provide a transparent cover 15 for the opening 14, formed of celluloid or the like, and the strap 9 serves to prevent scratching or other mutilation of this transparent covering.
It Will be seen from the foregoing that I have produced an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet a distinct and advantageous improvement over the construction heretofore provided, and it is this improvement in the old article Which I seek to protect by Letters Patent.
I claim:
An improvement in a pocket case of the type comprising a flat sheath open at one end, an article-holding strap passing slidably through the other end of the sheath and foldable around an end of one side Wall ofsaid sheath onto the outer side of said Wall, and fastening means for releasably securing said strap against said side Wall; said improvement comprising a strip of material extending longitudinally of the aforesaid side Wall from said one end thereof to a point spaced from its other end to provide a name card pocket, said stripbeing secured at its side edges and its inner end against the outer side of said side Wall but being free at its outer end to permit insertion of a name card into the pocket between the strip and side Wall, said strip having a longitudinal name-displaying slot of less Width than the aforesaid strap to be en tirely covered by said strap When the latter is folded onto and secured against said side Wall, the fold of the strap then extending across and closing the open end of the card pocket to retain the name card in said pocket; I V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
ISAAC F. POTTER.
