Description

No1v 10, 1925 V J. SQ GARVIN RELAY Filed Dec. 27, 1923 lrmerifari' da/m 01 fan in 5 Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,560,774 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. GARVIN,
OF BOGOTA, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN ELECTRIC COM- PANY, INCORPORATED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEXV YORK.
RELAY.
Application filed December 27, 1923.
a relay with an armature which is of simple and rugged construction and having a particularly sensitive adjusting mechanism.
A feature of the invention is a relay having an armature hinged to and pivoted on a mounting plate and provided with adjustable spring which cooperates with the armature tailpiece and the mounting plate whereby a very sensitive adjustment of the armature can be secured.
Another feature relatedto the foregoing resides in positioning the adjusting spring relatively close to the point at which the armature is pivoted to the mounting plate as compared with the distance between the pivot and the armature contacts, and on the opposite side of the pivot from the contacts.
This invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing in which the same reference characters are used throughout to designate the same parts, and in which Fig. l is a side elevation showing the armature as it appears attached to the relay.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the under part of the armature and hinge.
Referring to the drawings, is an armature hinged to the mounting plate by means of a flexible hinge member 11. The hinge 11 is attached to the mounting plate by means of screws or rivets 16 and to the armature by means of rivets 12.
The tail portion 18 of the armature 10 is cut out and formed to provide two pivotprojections 13 having knife edges 14 which make contact with the mounting plate 15.
The hinge 11 is constructed of very thin spring material and due to the distance between its points of attachment to the armature and mounting plate is sufficiently flexible to make it substantially neutral in its effect on the operation of the armature. It also prevents twisting and side movement of the armature.
Serial No. 682,889.
Rigidly attached to the mounting plate 15 is a threaded stud 21 which projects up wardly through a slightly elon ated opening 22 in the tail piece 18 of the armature.
Seated on the armature tail piece and enclosing the stud 21 is a conical shaped spring 17. Engaging the threaded portion of stud 21 is a thumb nut 19 which is adapted to compress the spring 17. A look nut 20 is provided for thumb nut 19. Due to the relatively short distance between the center line of post 21 and the pivot points 14 as compared with the distance between the pivot points and the other end of the armature which carries the electrical contacts 24 and 25, it will be obvious that a very delicate adjustment of the armature can be effected by turning the thumb nut 1.) several turns of which causing but a very slight change in the pressure on the contact 24.
What is claimed is:
1. In an electromagnetic device, a mounting plate, an armature having a knife edge pivot, a flexible conducting hinge for said armature secured thereto and to said mounting plate, and an armature adjusting spring cooperating with said mounting plate and said armature.
2. An armature construction comprising a mounting plate, an armature pivoted byv means of a knife edge against said mounting plate, a flexible hinge securing said armature to said mounting plate, and a yielding adjusting member carried plate and engaging the tail portion of said armature.
3. A circuit closing device comprising a core having a free end, a mounting plate attached to said core near the free end thereof, an armature, a flexible metallic strip securing said armature to said mounting plate in position to be attracted to the free end of said core, said armature having a knife edge pivot bearing against said mounting plate, and adjustable yielding means carried by said mounting plate and engaging said armature.
4. An armature construction comprising a mounting plate, an armature having a cir cuit closing contact at one end thereof and a knife edge pivot bearing against said mounting plate, a flexible metallic hinge securing said armature to said mounting plate and yielding armature adjusting means carried by said mounting by said mounting plate and engaging said armature on the opposite side of saidpivot from said circuit closing contacts.
5. A relay comprising a core, a mounting plate hinged to said core, an armature having a contact at one end thereof and a knife edge pivot bearing against said mounting plate, a flexible metallic hinge securing said armature to said mounting plate, and yielding means for adjusting said armature, said yielding means being carried by said mounting plate and engaging said armature on the opposite side of said pivot from said contact.
6. A relay comprising a mounting plate, an armature having a back contact at one end thereof and aknife edge pivot bearing against said mounting plate, a flexible metallic hinge securing said armature to said mounting plate, and a screw regulated spring carried by said mounting plate and engaging said armature on the opposite side of said pivot from said contact.
7. A relay comprising a mounting plate, an armature having a contact at one end thereof, and a pivot bearing against said mounting plate, a flexible hinge securing said armature to the mounting plate and a screw regulated spring carried by said mounting plate and engaging said armature on the opposite side of the pivot from said contact, said spring being positioned relatively close to said pivot as compared with the distance between saidv pivot and said contacts.
8. A relay comprising a core, a mounting plate attached to said core, an armature having circuit closing contacts at one end thereof and knife edge pivots formed therein near the other end and bearing against said mounting plate, a flexible metal hinge secured to said armature and said mounting plate for holding said armature in position to be attracted by said core, and a screw regulated armature adjusting spring carried by said mounting plate and engaging said armature on the opposite side of the point from said circuit closing contacts, the engagement of said spring with said armature being relatively close to said pivot points as compared With the distance between said pivot points and said circuit closing contacts whereby a very sensitive adjustment of said armature issecured'.
9. A relay comprising a core, a mounting plate attached to said core, a flexible metal hinge secured at one end. to said mounting plate, an armature secured to the other end of said hinge, one extremity of said armature being in spaced superposition to the hinge at its fixation point with. the mounting plate, a screw regulated armature adjusting spring to control. said spaced relation between said extremity of the spring and armature, said armature being formed to have a-bal anced knife edge on each'si'de of said extremity and bearing against said mounting plate.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 22 clay of December, A. 1)., 1923.
JOHN S. GARVIN.
