To all whomtmayconoem:
Be it known that I CROMWEIL HAMFOBD Valmer,v a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ghilworth Hill, near Guildford, in t e county .of Surre Eng-v land, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in or :Relatin to Pumps, Enthe following gines, and the like, of whic is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, englnes and the like of' the kind described in my prior United States Patent No. 1,378,065..
driven so that all points of -the -displacer move in circles of similar diameter, said movement being hereinafter vtermed a par acyclic movement.
In pumps and englnes ofthe aforesaid type as described in my`Unit'ed fStates Patent No. 1,378,065 the displacer was provided with flanges which extended beyond and worked u on Han ed portions provided on the side p ates of t in addition, to a driving shaft, separate guiding eccentrics'or their equivalent were also provided. v
According to one feature of the present invention, the' aforesaid anges are dispensed with, and the displacer is enclosed by, and works upon, the body portion vor carcase of the pump, engine or the like so that it does not extend `beyond the same.
According to another feature of the present invention the use of separate guidin eccentrics or their equivalent is dispense with and the displacerv is driven and also` guided in its so-called paracyclic movement through driving plates, gearing, eccentrics, cranks or the like, which are also preferably7 located mainly or entirely within lthe casing of the apparatus. To these endsithe enclosing casing may be constituted by a hollow casting provided with a central web which acts as a support for a pair of-driving and guiding eccentrics, disc cranks or theirequivalent, said web also constituting the rear workin face ofthe displacer, the 'front workinor ace being constituted bg a cover plate which is detachably connecte to the casting. A centrallydisposed boss is -wihch the dis'placer works, is
`vided with pac e enclosing casing, while,
also providedl which may formed inte` y I.gral with the'castin sald boss Serving as ace for the displacer.
an innerworkin The rearcover p ate may also be yprovided vwith recessesto accommodate-the rear ends of the shafts of the eccentrics or cranks" which drive and guide the displacer as 'also with -a bearin for the shaftl vwhich drives, for example t rough spur gearing, the said eccentrics or cranks.
According to a' further feature of the presy; cnt .l-nventlon the displacer, or the external casing, as also a fixed inner member around' structed and' arranged as automatically to take upfor wear.
The packing pieces may be` tion or casing or certain vof the packing pieces may be located within the displacer and the remainder in the body portion.
' In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and-readil carried into effect the same will now be4 e'scribedl more drawing whichjshows by way of example two constructional forms of pumps embodying the three aforesaid features in combination, and in which Flgurev I- is an elevation of one form of pump with the. front cover plate removed as' ingpieces which are so cony O ositionedeither xn the displacenor. 1n the, ody porfully with reference to the accompanying i Figure l, the displacer being shown in ap`` proximately the position whlch it` takes 4up when in its extreme lateral position. .Figure 3 is a view corresponding to Figure 1 showing a pump.
. Figure 4, 5 and 6 are detail views showing modified forms of packing pieces.
modified construction of Y A is the displacer which, in the example shown at Figures 1 and 2 is constituted by cas- 1 a gappedcylinder. B is the enclosing ing which, in the example shown at Figures 1 and 2 is of c lindrical formation. B is the central web, (J is the front cover plate and D is the rear cover plate. It will be'observed that the web B', the sides of the' casing B,
and the front cover plate C, completel enclose the displacer A, these parts thus orming outer working faces for the displacer A.
-An inner working face is provided-by acyi v lindrical vboss'vlE, Y which in vthe Aexam le shown, is carried by 4a we serving as a artition which divides the suc- -tion from t e delivery side of the pump.
e, the web e a so The front cover plate C- is secured to the 'central'- web B by a bolt F andnut F, the head F2 of the bolt being formed with a re- -cessed portionwhich acts asa support for the front end of the driving shaft H, H
are the combined guiding and driving vele-v lments which, in lthe examples shown, are
constituted by disc cranks, the crank in l1.' of each crank extending-into a recess 1n the displacer A, said recess being provided with'- a liner'a. The disc h2 of each crank rotates within a liner b in the web B and the rear end of each crank shaft is supported within a recess in the rear cover plate D, said recess being also provided with a liner d.
The driving shaft G rotates within a bearing f] in the rear cover plate D. Keyed to displacer A.
The displaeer A,.asl also the central boss E, is providedwith packing which, inthe examples ,shown, is constituted by wedgelike pieces K of suitable material inserted in undercutslots lo', k. Positioned beneath Veach wedge-shaped piece K is la spring k2 which tends to thrust the packing outwards, each spring, in the examples shown, being constituted by a piece of vresilient steel wire of sinuous formation. Mounted within a recess Z in the front face of the dis lacer A is a-strip of packing material L, t e recess Z being closed at each end by the two filling pieces Z'. A similar strip of packing material (not shown) is provided and located within a recess in the rear face of the displacer, this second packing strip being interrupted at the points where the pins Irl-of the crank K enter the displacer.
Instead of a pair of cranks, more than two can be employed; `for example, four cranks may be used, one crank being placed between each pair of packing pieces K, K. p
In the modified arrangement shown at Figure 3 the displacer is formed with-bosses A', A', which accommodate the crank pins h', h', the latter being of massive construction, and the sides of the casin B are formed with recesses B2,'B2, to a lapt the same to the modified construction. of displacer. The surfaces a", ax of the casin B, the displacer A, and the central boss E, have identical curvatures, and, to this end, are struck from the saine centre, while the surfaces a", a of the bosses A', A', and ofv the4 interior surface of the recesses B', B2 are also of similar curvatura. In this embodlment of the invention the packing pieces K, K are adapted to co-operate with surfaces K', K', constituted by inserted and replaceable metal strips which are so shaped as to'l 'ing to the stroke ofthe cranks; for example, in cases where-the cranks have a throw of 1", and accordingly a stroke of 2, the curved surfaces K', K', would have a radius of 2". In addition to the driving pinions J, J, cranks may be provided at the ends of the shafts H, H and connected together by a tie member or connectin rod not shown), said ycranks bein locate outsi e'the casing and at right ang es to the cranks h', Il? so as to ensure a smooth passa e over the dead centre. The connecting ro located between e surfaces K', K', are y .struck from centres havlng radii correspondthel aforesaid additional cranks may, 1n certain cases, serve as thedriving member for the shafts H, H; the inions J, J and I and the shaft G being dispensed with.
In the modified constructions of packing shown at Figures 4, 5 and 6 each piece is formed in two parts m, m situated within an undercut recess and pressedoutwards by a sinuous piece of spring steel m2. The packing piece shown insectinal 'end view at lFigure 4 may be used in place of the packing L, the part m thereof'being wedgeshaped and positioned above one of the humps of the spring m2 so that it is pressed upwards and outwards as the packing piece is worn down, thereby compensating auto-y matcally for wear. Figure A5 is a longitudinal section and Figure 6 is an end view of a packing piece which may replace the packing pieces K. In this instance the spring m2 acts both to push the parts outwards as wear takes place and also to maintain them by endwise ,pressure in close contact with the cover C and web B'. Holes orv slots may be formed in the'side faces ofthe packing strips so as to accelerate wear on these surfaces, and by thus reducing the thickness of the` wedges, to allow them to protrude further out so as to takeyup the wear on the contacting portions.
Packing pieces may also be provided with ends having faces whichmeet at an angle. Balance weights may be used where necessary or in the case of cranks the arrangement of the tie rod may be so chosen as to effect the necessary balance. Eccentrics may also be used in place of cranks and vice versa, whilesuitable oiling arrangements maiy be added where desired.
n view of the fact that the displacer element A or A hasa parac clic movement imparted thereto, in contraistinction to an leccentric movement, it is possible to emy ploy resilientfpacking pieces having flat rubbing surfaces .which engage on fiat facets on the casing or on the displacer element A or A', which facets are parallel to the fiat rubbing surfaces ofthe packing pieces, thus producing increased efficiency. The packing pieces, as also the facets, are preferably made replaceable. A p
