To ZZ whom t may concern.' -Be it knownA that I, H. PAGE, -a citizen of the United States, residingk at Slater, in the county' ofl Saline and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usejfu'l Improvements in Veterinary Syringes, of vwhich the following 1s a specification.'
" The present invention relates to a syringe to be used by veterinary surgeons for making injections into animals.
The main 'objectof the invention is to providea syringe which may be attached directly to a bottle or container holding the serum or medicine to be used on an animal.
A syringe attached in this manner is adapted to be lled directly from the bottle and then immediately 'used on an animal. It is evident that a great number of animals may thus be treated one 'after the other and the syringe filled as required from the bottle.
The syringe is provided with a stem carrying double graduations so that a direct reading may be made indicating the dose to be used on the animal and simultaneously the quantity of medicine still contained in the syringe.

To the inclined portion ofthe` carrier 17 is rigidly 'secured a cylindrical casing 24 Asmall window 26 so that the amount of material in the syringe can easily be ascertained through the same. A glass cylinder V27 litssnugly inside the-casing 24 and is retained'in position between a cap 28 and a head 29, the former being threaded eX- inserted another rubber or' leather vgasket 31. In this manner a tight joint-is formed at each end of the syringe so that no-serum -or medicine `contained therein canescape at either -endfthrough the joints..
At the forward end of the h serted an outlet nozzle 32 having threaded engagement therewith,and this nozzle'communicates with a channel or port'33 in the head 29'for passing themedicine from the glass cylinder -27 into the body of the animal.v In this -port is provided a-valve Vwhich is adapted to have two positions, one -to permitoflow of the medicinethrough the port from the cylinder to thenozzleand the other to close the outlet to-the nozzle and simultaneously open communication lfrom the interior of the casing intransverse diead 29 is in- I rectionV toa po`rtr35." In the cap 28a stem 37 is adapted to slide in axial direction. The stem is rovided vwith a convex hand-le 38r fitting the a piston l2 which is preferably made from softl rubber and has an annular groove a3' around it. This piston abuts against a retaining washer held in position by a head l-5 termed `on the end of the stem 37. At the rear end of the piston l2 is shown a compression disc 4:6 which is threaded on the stem 37 and which tends u compress the rubber piston A.112 when screwed up tightly against the saine. The rear end oiA the disc has a square sectioned boss e117 which is adapted to engage in a correspondingly shaped recess r18 in the cap 2,8. Y lt is evident .that when t-he piston is retracted all the way up against the cap 28, the square sectioned boss 4:7 will engage in the recess L18 and by then turning the handle 38 it is posisible to tighten or loosen the ydisc 1G against the rubber piston L.l2 to obtain a suitable grip between the same and the interior of the glass cylinder 27. Alongone side of the stem 37 is furnished a flat surface which is provided with two scales7 one commencing at Zero near the piston 42 and the other commencing at zero under the handle 38. ln this manner it is possible to read from both ends of 'Clie stem and to ascertain without computation how much of the medicine has been vtaken out of the syringe and how much left.
On .the head 29 is provided two stops and for the valve 341 so that when the valve is turned in one direction communication is opened between the interior of the syringe and the nozzle 32, while when the valve is turned in the other direction until its handle abuts against the other stop, communication will be opened between the interior of the syringe and the bottle 1Q.
On the outside of the casing 2l is mounted a linger grip 53 ,facilitating the operation oit the syringe. The operator places the handle 38 inthe hollow of his hand and lays one ot his lingers overthe grip 53 and in this manner the pushing down of the stem 37 is easily accomplished.
` In using the device the bottle 10 containing the serum or other' medicine is clamped is rQStQn 01.1 the Carrier l7 between the coverY 23, engaging the mouth of the bottle, and the bese '22., engaging the butt @ad thereof. By pushing the base forwardly as far as it will go the slide 2,1 will follovv and the ratchet dog 2O will engage in a suitable tooth on the shank 18 and hold the bottle securely thereon. Before the bottle is se cured in this manner the stem 37 of the piston e2 should be pushed into the syringe as far as it will go. The valve 34 is next turned to open communication between the tube 13 and the interior of the syringe. The stem is now drawn out of the syringe until the piston is stopped by the cap 28 and the syringe is then filled. The valve 34 is next turned until the port 35 is closed and communication is opened to the nozzle 32 from the interior of the syringe.

Although the device is primarily designed as a veterinary syringe, it is evident .that the construction adapts itself equally well to hypodermics of all kindsQ i lt should be noted that the carrier` 17 will permit the use of different sized bottles both as .regards lengthV and diameter. Having thus described the invention7 what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device ofthecl/iaracter described, a cylinder', a headl at'ione'iend of cylinder formed with inlet and discharge ports, a piston sudati@ iotgifuaiiiauy in said iyi; inder, a reservoir carrier including'iastri'p extending longitudinally said cylinder and having a portionV secured tothe cylinder and 'a portion extending in spaced relation to the rear end of the cylinder,y an coyer entending from said strip to engage the torward end oli a reservoir andprcvidedhwith an opening, a conduit passed thrcugh the opening and having its rear end portion adapted to extendl into the reservoir its forward end in communication with the inlet port of said head, and means carried by the free portion of said strip and adjustable longitudinally thereof into position to engage'the rear end of the reservoir and hold the reservoir in place.
2. In a device of the character described, a cylinder, a head at one end of said cylinder formed with inlet and discharge ports, a piston slidable longitudinally in said cylinder, a reservoir carrier including a strip extending longitudinally of said cylinder and having' a portion secured to the cylinder and a portion extending in spaced relation to the rear end of the cylinder, a cover extending from said strip to engage the forward end'of a reservoir, a conduit communicating with the inlet port of said head and adapted to extend into a reservoir engaged by said cover, and a base adjustable longitudinally upon the free portion of said strip into position for engagement with the rear end of the reservoir to securely clamp the-reservoir between the base and cover.
3. In a device of the character described, a cylinder, a head at one end of said cylinder formed with inlet and discharge ports, a piston slidable longitudinally in said cylinder, a reservoir carrier including a strip extending' longitudinally of said cylinder and having a portion secured to the cylinder and a portion extending in spaced relation to the rear end of the cylinder, a cover extending from said strip to engage the forward end of a reservoir, a conduit communieating with the inlet port of said head and adapted to extend into a reservoir engaged by said cover, and a base adjustable longitudinally upon the free portion of said strip into position for engagement with the rear end of the reservoir to securely clamp the reservoir between the base and cover, saidv base being conceived-whereby a reservoir engaged by the base will be automatically centered thereon.
4. In a device of the character described,
a cylinder, a head at one end of said cylinder formed with inlet and discharge ports, a piston slidable longitudinally in said cylinder, a reservoir carrier including a strip extending longitudinally of said cylinder and having a portion secured to the cylinder and a portion extending in spaced relation to the rear end of the cylinder,`a cover extending from said strip to engage the forward end of a reservoir, a conduitl communicating with the inlet port of said head and adapted to extend into a reservoir engaged by said cover, a base adapted to engage the rear end of a reservoir, a guide carried by said base and slidable along the free portion of said strip, and means to secure said guide in a set position upon said strip. 5. In a device of the character described, a cylinder, a head at one end of said cylinder formed with inlet and discharge ports, a piston slidable longitudinally in said cylinder, a reservoir carrier including a strip mounted at one side of said cylinder and having a portion attached to said cylinder longitudinally thereof and a portion extending in diverging relation to the rear end of the cylinder and provided with ratchet teeth, a cover extending from the said strip to engage the forward end of a reservoir and provided with a depending peripheral flange and with an opening, a base adapted to engage the rear end of the reservoir and provided at one side with a guide sleeve slidably mounted upon the rear end portion of said strip, a latch carried by said guide and adapted to engage the teeth of said strip to retain said base in a set position for clamping engagement with the rear end of the reservoir, and a conduit passed through the opening in said cover and having its rear end portion adapted for insertion into the reservoir and itsy forward end communicating with the inlet port of said head.
