State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in RaZor-Stropping Device, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in razor stropping devices, and. it consists .in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of thetype described that ,is adapted to swing the safety razor blade with respect to the strop whereby both sides of each cutting edge of the razor blade will be sharpened. c l
A further Vobjectof my invention is to provide a device of the. type described that is adapted'to give sharpening pressure with stropper to the safety razor blade limited only by strength of construction.
A further object of my invention is to yprovide a device of the type described which is relatively simple in construction, durable and eflicient for the purpose intended, and which is not likely to get* out of order easily.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the device,

:In carrying out' my invention I provide a frame indcated generally at 1 :that `is adapted to rotatably carry a` safety razor blade holding device 2 and that is also adapted to carry a razor strop 3. The frame 1 consists of two arms 4, these arms being integral with a casting 5 and projecting therefrom. The castings 5 and arms 4 are rigidly secured to each other by means of pinsv 6. The pins have their ends upset at 7 so as to rigidly secure the two castings of the frame together. Y
It will be clearly seen from Figure 2 that there are three pins 6 that securel the free ends of the arms 4 together. These pins are provided with rollers which in reality are sleeves 8. The sleeves 8 are held against longitudinal movement with respect to the pins 6 by means of the bushings 9. The bushings 9 extend beyond the exterior surface of the sleeves 8 and form a guide way for the strop 3. The pin 6 that is disposed adjacent to the castings 5' is also provided with a roller 8 and with bushings 9. The
`belt is fed between the rollers adjacent to the4 free end of the arms 4 and is also diss posed around theroller inthe manner shown i in Figure 2.
The strop 3 is also adapted to actuate the safety razor blade holding mechanism 2. This mechanismor device is clearly shown in Figures 4 and y5.l It will be noted that the device has a frame 10, this frame having side plates 11 and ay connecting bar 12. The plates 11 carryy trunnions 13 and'13 that are rotatably disposed in openings 14 in the arms 4. One of the trunnions is semi-circular in shape, the flatcportion lying in tbc same plane as the 4flat surface 15 ,of vthe-bar 12. This construction is designed so as to vpermit the rea-dy securing of a safety razor lthe bar 12, is slidably disposed beneath the bar .12, and isl adapted to ycarry the ra'or vblade 16..Y The bar 17 has three projections 18 `that extend into openings 19 in the blade 16. lOne of the plates 11 has an opening 20 therein of the same shape as a crosssection through the bar `17. The bar 17 is adapted to be moved through vthe opening20' when disposing the blade in place or when removing the blade from the device. The bar 17 is provided with a semi-circular tru'nnio'n 21 at one or its ends, this trunnion being aligned with the semi-circular trunnion 13V whereby the two trunnions will form acomplete cylindrical projection. The other end of the bar 17 has a beveled edge 22 that is adapted to be received in a beveled slot 23 when the bar 17 is in closed position.
The bar 17 is prevented from being withdrawn from the opening 20. This is accomplished b y means or a pin 24' that is slidably received in a slot 25 o1 the bar 12. It will further be noted from Figure 6 that the cylindrical projections 18 extend above the top or the blade 16 and are slidably received in a slot 26 in the bar 12. The bar 17`is moved through the opening until the pin 24 abuts theV side of the slot 25 that is disposed adjacent to the semi-circular trun# nion 13. The bar 17 is now in such a positionthat it can readily receive the safety razor blade 16. The blade 16 is held against movement by means of the projections'18- It will be noted from Figure 1 that the cntting edgesr of the blade 16 project beyond the sides or the bars 12 and 17. The bar 17 withthe blade 16', is now moved into the position shown in Figure 6. The slot 23 receives the end 22 or the bar 17 and secures the end in place. The cam surfaces 22 and 23 cause the bar 17 to be moved upwardly so ras to force the blade 16 into'contact with the bar 17. The bar 17 is held in closed position by means of ascrew 27 that is rotatably carried by the semi-cylindrical trunnion13, (see Figure 6). The screw 27 has a flat portion 28 that is adapted to be aligned with the flat portion 29 'or the semi-circular trunnion 13. vWhen the flatv portions 28 and 29 are aligned, the bar 17 may be readily moved into a position to permit the blade 16 to be removed from the bar. The screw 27 is shown in Figure 6 as locking the bar 17 against outward movement. Recesses 3() are disposed parallel with the undersurface or the barl 12. These' recesses permit the portions o'rthe blade 16 that project beyond the edges of the bar 17 to be readily moved past the plate 11.
The cylindrical trunnio'n 13' and the 'semicylindrical trunnions 13 and 21 are rotatdispsed ,in the arras 4 and permit the blade holding device 2 to be roclied inthe frame 1. In Figure 7 I have shown the slots 33 as hav ing enlarged portions that permit the portions or the rods disposed adjacent to the slot 33 to be sprung outwardly by the plate 34 and thereby securely grip the plate. The free ends or the plates 34 are received in openings 36', (see Figures 7 and 8). The openings are fashioned to permit the rocking or the plates 34 on one or their longitudinal edges, (see. Figure 8), andto permit the flexing or the plates (see Figure 7). The strop 3 is adapted to slidably engage with the rods 32', see Figure 2). The rods 32 not only provide means' for guiding the strop" past the blade 16 but also (io-Operate with strop clamping members 36 to grip the strop therebetween. The clamping members 36 have a wedge-shaped portion A37 and trnnnions 38. The' trunnions38 are received in the recesses39. It will be ndte'd from Figure 5 that the recesses are larger in diameterthan the trunnions. This con? struction permits the clamping Vmembers 36 to rotate in the recesses. The clamping members 36 also have longitudinallyextending grooves 40 in which straight wire springs 41 are disposed. The springs 41 are secured at their mid points such as at a?,
-( see Figure 1), to the clamping members 36. 'The free ends or the springs 41 are rigidly secured to the plates 11 at 42. The wire springs 41 act as torsional springs-and are adapted to be placed under tension when the wedge-shaped portions 37 of the clamping members are swung either to the right or to the left of the position shown in Figure 5.
From' the 'foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily f understood. The blade 16 is inserted in the blade carrying device in the manner heretofore described. The blade holding device 2 will assume the position shown in Figure 2 when the strop is being pulled in the direction or the arrow. )Vhen the strop is pulled in this direction, the wedge-shapedportions 37 will be swung into the position shown. Furthermore, the side of the cutting edge brought into contact with the strop is such that the strop when sharpening the blade will be moving away from the edge. The blade is also held at the desired angle With respect to the strop so as to provide the proper cutting edge to the blade.
`When removing the sharpened blade from the device, the screw 27 is turned so as to permit the bar 1.7 to be Withdrawn. The blade I6 may new be readily removed from the bar. The rods 32 are resiliently and loosely supported so as to permit the strop to `move the rods slightly away from the members 36 when the strop is being actuated. The moving of the rods 32 by the strop permits the strop to Contact With the cutting edges of the blade and to sharpen the latter. The blade holding device 2 will automatically rock every time the movement of the strop 3 is reversed. In Figure 2 I have shown the castings 5 as being provided with an opening 4:3 that is adapted to receive a hook whereby the device is supported. The
device is very easily operated and is adapted to eliciently sharpen the safety razor blade se that the latter may be iised again.
