This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of mattresses in which the stuffing material is arranged in separate compartments, such as in the Letters Patent granted to me May 20, 1873. In said patent I employed a series of suitably-shaped columns arranged vertically side by side, Within which the stuffing material was placed.

The object of my present invention is to improve upon such; andgto such end it consists in constructing a mattress of a series of separate independent" tubular sections, each of such sections being provided; with its own covering or envelope, which, after being thus constructed, are arranged horizontally in sufficient number to form a mattress, and then united together, soy as to, leave their top and bottom or bearing-surfaces in the same true plane, in such a vmanner that, by the partitions between the tubes, the stuffing of the mattress is prevented from shifting, and, if the envelope or ticking of 'the tubes becomes punctured, the stuflin g of this punctured tube only can escape while that of the remaining tubes is securely retained. y

The ticking of my mattress is rendered water-proof, so that the mattress can be used on board of vessels, or other places exposed to moisture, without allowing the moisture to penetrate to the stuffing.

In the drawing, the letter A designates a mattress, which is composed of four (more or less) tubular sections, a b c d, each section being made separate from the others, and providedwith its own ticking or envelope.

When a suiicient number of tubes are ready to make up a mattress, I unite the same by stitching, or by any other suitable means, and the mattress is ready for use.

The tubular sections may be placed in the direction of the length of the mattress, as shown in the drawing, or they may be placed transversely to the length of the mattress, though I prefer placing them lengthwise, as shown.

In a mattress made according to this invention, the stuiiingof each tube is separated entirelST from the 'stuing of the remaining sections; and when the mattress is used the stuffing is prevented from shifting,` so that it retains an even surface, Furthermore, if one of the tubes becomes punctured, the stuffing ot' this injured` tube only can escape while the stuiiing of the remaining tubes is securely retained.

The tiek ot' 'my mattress, or the envelopes of the several sections are rendered waterproof by treating them with a compound made of parafne and` bees-wax, or with any other compound suitable for this purpose, so that when the mattress is used on board of a vessel, or in any other place where the same is liable to become exposed to moisture, the water-proof ticking will protect the stufng against the iniuence of moisture, and a mattress is obtained which is particularly adapted for use on ships.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combinationfin a mattress, of a series of horizontal independent tubular sections, each of said independent sections having its own envelope united together, as set forth, to leave the top and bottom or bearing surfaces true planes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
