nE'rAcHnBLE covEn Fon. WMERLESS cooKERs.
Applicaton'led August 24,1923. Serial No. 659,048.
'T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, ROBERT H. WEN'roRF and ERNEST` A. KERLER, both citizens of the United States, residing at West Bend, in
the .county of Washington and State of'v Wisconsin, jhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Covers for Waterless Cookers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cooking vessels and is more particularly directed to a detachable cover for a class of cooking vessels better known as waterless boilers, and has for its primary object the provision of locking means for preventing the cover ofthe boiler from beingforced therefrom by the pressure of steam within the boiler.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a device which will automatically lock the cover to the boiler when the cover is properly seated on the top of the boiler.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a quick, detachable cover and one.
which can be secured to the boiler 'so as to be substantially steamtight.
These and other objects are obtained by providing a plurality of pivoted latch members mounted on the cover and adapted to co-operate with the boiler when the cover is positioned onthe same to automatically lock the cover the boiler so as to be steam.
. of our improved gravity actuated latch member. l
'Ihe invention hereinafter described and claimed is an improvement over co-pendmg application Serial No. 592.279 ofRobert H. Wentorf and Ernest A. Kerler filed Octo` ber 4, 1922.
For purposes v of illustration we have shown our improved locking means for detachably securing a cover toa boiler 5,
which is preferably of the waterless type of boiler. The boiler 5 is `provided with the usual base 6 and usual bead 7 formed at the t'op thereof for strengthening and reinforcing the boiler construction. In the present invention the bead is rolled outwardly from the wall of the boiler, as clearly shown' in the cro-ss sectional view of Fig. 1. Detachably seated on the top of boiler 5 is a cover member 8 of dome-'like construction. This vcover is providedwitli a pei'ipl'lerally arranged bead, as shown at 9, the diameter of this knurl being of greater diameter than that of the boiler proper. Extending downwardly from the peripherally arranged knurl 9 with a gradual taper 'therefrom is 'a telescoping portion 10' which is adapted for telescopical connection with the top of the boiler. The cover. 8 is provided with looplike handlesll secured t0 the eoverby means'of rivets 12.. The outer ends of the handles 11 extend outwardly, as shown at 13, so as to form pivotal supports 14 for our improved locking means. Our improved automatically actuated locking device comprises latching members 15, which are formed of substantially a fiat piece of metal having a tongue 16 depressed inwardlyl from the latch member 'at a point substantially centrally of the same.
Formed on the upper end of the latch mem.
ber 15v and integrally therewith are two op` positely positioned bearing portions 1,7 which are adapted to receive a pin 18 in pivotally supporting the latch member 15 to the pivotal support 14 ofthe handles 11.'
It will be noted. that the latch membersl are so constructed that they normally assume a position' slightly inwardly from the vertical position, because the pivots 17 of these members are slightlyl oii'set with respect to the plane of the body portion of these members. It will valso be noted that the tongues 16 of these latch' members 15 are inclined upwardly and inwardly at sub. .stantially an angle of .45 degrees. By reason of this inclined construction, the` tongues 16 have a camming action against the Abead 7 of the top of the boiler and cause these latch members to swing out wardly with respect to the cover as the telescoping portion 1() of the cover 8 is de.- pressed in the top of the boiler, and as soon as the cover is properly seated or depressed to its normal steam-tight position, the latches 15 are actuated by gravity to their normal vertical positions or the positions shown in Fig. 1, wherein the upper ortop edges of the tongues 16 engage the underside of the bead Tand rmly secure the cover to the boiler.
While in the above construction we have only shown two of these latches, employed, it will, of course, be understood that' more than *two may be employed, and preferably four are used in such a manner that they arey spaced substantially at 90 degrees around the periphery of the cover so that a steam tight connection between the cover and the boiler can always be assured.
In detaching the cover 'from ,the boiler, it will be readily seen that each of these latch members may be readily actuated or swung outwardly about their pivots, so that the upper edge of the tongues 16 of these latch members may be quickly disengaged from the bead 7 of the boiler 5 and the cover readily removed.
ln the above specification, we have described one embodimentwhich our` invention may assume in practice, but it will, of
course, be understood that the same is capable/lof modification and that modification may be made without. departing from 4the spirit and scope of the invention, as eX- pressed f in the following claims.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A detachable cover for a vessel, comprising a cover member, and gravity actuated latches made of substantially flat material carried by said cover and depressed tongues formed substantially centrally of Maase@ said latches for detachably securing the cover member to a vessel.
2. detachable cover for a vessel comprising a cover member, gravity actuated latches made of substantially flat material pivotally mounted on said cover, and depressed tongues formed substantially centrally of and extending upwardly at an l. angle with respect to said latches and adapted to engage said vessel for detachably securing the cover member to said vessel.
3. A locking device, for a boiler having a cover therefor, a bead around the top thereof, and a plurality of latches made of sub-- stantially flat material .pivotally carried by said cover having upwardly and inwardly inclined depressed tongues formed integrally therewith and normally actuated by gravity to engage the underside of said bead for securing the cover to said boiler. Y
4. A locking device for a boiler having .a cover therefor, a bead around the topv
