Be it known that I, Moiuus C. Moonu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luling, in the county of Caldwell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Nell Hook-On Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
Devices heretofore used for connecting the reciprocatory, eccentric-ope ated rotls of a central power plant, with lines for ac tuating pump jacks oi oilwells, have been more or less crude and dangerous, and most oi them have been very hard to operate, even though in some instances, the rcciprocatory movement of the eccentric rods has been utilized to take up slack in the jacltmperrzit ing line.
It is the object of my intention to provide a new and improved device whereby any line may be pulled up to the central power plant and easily connected with its respective eccentric rod, the construction being such that the movement of this red is safely and advantageously used to pull the line to the desired extent.
lVith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accoin'ianying drawing, which discloses a side elevatiou partly broken away and in section, of. the improved device In the drawing above briefly described, E designates the usual eccentric oil a central powerplant, R has reference to a rod connected to and reciprocated by said eccentric, H designates the usual hook-0d" rod, and L indicates the line leading to a pump jack, which line is to be connected either to the eccentric rod R or the hook-oil rod H, as occasion may demand. My improved de vice is used to draw the line L toward the power plant so that it may be connected with either of the above named rods, and while a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown, it is to be understood that nunierous other forms of construction can be used.
The numeral 1 designates in a general way, a chain guide connected with the CM centric rod R, and 1 refers to a second chain guide connected. with the line L. A. chain 2 is anchored by means of the hook-off rod H, said chain extending to and being ea gaged with the second guide 1, then extending to the guide 1, being engaged with the latter, and extending from the same as indicated at 3; The end 3 is intended to be pulled by hand to take up slack in the chain between the two chain guides 1 and 1, each time the rod It moves toward the line L, and when this movement of the rod R is taking place, the chain guide 1 is held against movement along the chain, away from the hook-off rod H, under the influence of the load. Provision is also made for establishing a positive pulling connection between the chain guide 1" and the chain 2,, when the rod R moves away from the line L, so that upon this movement, a portion of the chain 2 will be pulled through the guide 1, thus causing the latter to move toward the power plant, and advancing the line one step. As soon as this step is completed and the rod R and guide 1' move again toward the line L, the operator by manipulating the chain end 3,- takes up all slack between the two guides 1 and 1. so that the next movement of the rod R and the guide 1 away from the line L,- will exertan'other pull on the latter. Thus, the line is advanced in a step by step manner un til it reaches a point at which it may readily be coupled to either of the rods R or H, as occasion may demand, the coupling being accomplished in any well known manner.-
The two guides 1 and 1 are preferably oi: identical construction and hence a description of one will suffice,- the reference characters used in this description however, being applied toboth of the guides. The nuineral at designates a yoke having a hook 5 for engagement with what is lmownas a combination clamp, indicated at 6, one of these clamps being connected with the rod R and another to the line L. A chain sheave 7 is rotatably mounted within the yoke 4 and is of any desired peripheral formation to prevent slipping of the chain thereon. One side of this sheave is provided with ratchet teeth 8, and a springp1'essed pawl 9 fulcrumed on the yoke 4-, is co-operable with these teeth. The pawl S) of the chain guide 1 permits turning of the sheave 7 of this guide in one direction, when the chain is pulled by the rod R and chain guide 1, but, as soon as this pull ceases,*the pawl prevents movement of the sheave in to return to its original position, under the influence of the load being pulled. VVhenever the chain guide 1 is pulled away from the load, by the rod R, its pawl 9 holds its sheave 7 against turning, but when the guide 1 moves in the opposite direction and the operator pulls upon the tree chain end 3, said pawl permits rotation of the sheave in question, so that slaclr, between the two guides 1 and 1 may be taken up.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the invention is simple and inexpensive, may be readily applied or detached, and may be efficiently and safely operated to perform work which has heretofore been arduous and has required a comparatively great length of time. \Vhile the primary intent of the device is for pulling up pump lines to the central power plant, it is obvious that it might be used for advancing other loads, and it the load be a dead one, it will not be essential to equip the chain guide 1 with a pawl and ratchet or with equivalent means, as the load will have no tendency to move back to its original position, each time it advanced by a pull on the chain. It is to be further understood, that while I have herein ret'erred only to the use of a chain, that any flexible member wriich will operate to produce the desired results, instead of a chain, is contemplated by my language. Moreover, while certain details have been shown, it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, various modifications may be made.
I claim l. The combination with a reciprocatory member and an anchor adjacent the same; of a chain guide connected to said reciprocatory member to be reciprocated thereby, a second chain guide adapted for connection to a load to be pulled toward said reciprocatory member, a chain anchored at one end by means oi? said anchor, said chain extend ing from the anchor to the second named chain guide and being engaged with the same, the chain then extending to the tirst;
amed guide, being engaged. with the latter and having its other end extending from the same, said other end being intended to be pulled to take up slack between the two chain guides upon each movement of the reciprocatory member toward the load, and means for establishing a positive pulling connection between the chain and the first named chain guide upon movement of the i'eciprocatory member away from the load.
2. The combination with a reciprocatory member and an anchor adjacent; the same; of a chain guide connected to said reciprocatory member to be reciprocated thereby, a second chain guide adapted for connection to a load to be pulled toward said reciprocatory member, a chain anchored at one end by means of said anchor, said chain extending from the anchor to the second named chain guide and being engaged with the same, the chain then extending to the first named guide, being engaged with the latter and having its other end extending from the same, said other end being intended to be pulled to take up slack between the two chain guides upon each movement of the reciprocatory member toward the load, means for establishing positive pulling connection between the chain and the first named chain guide upon movement oi the reciprocatory member away from the load, and means for holding the second named chain guide against movement along the chain away from the aforesaid anchor.

A device of the class described comprising a chain guide adapted for connection with a reciprocatory member, a second chain guide adapted for connection to a load to be pulled toward said member, a chain adapted to be anchored at one end adjacent said reciprocatory member, said chain extending to the second named chain guide and being engaged with the same, the chain then extending to the first named guide, being engaged with the latter and having its other end extending from the same, said other end being intended to he pulled to take up slack between the two chain guides upon each movement of the reciprocatory member toward the load. and means for establishing a positive pulling connection between the chain and the first named chain guide upon movement of the reciprocatory member away from the load.

A device of the class described comprising a chain guide adapted for connection to a reciprocatory member, a second chain guide adapted to be connected with a load to be drawn toward said reciprocatory member, each of said chain guides comprising a sheave shaped to prevent slipping oi a chain thereon, and ratchet means for holding the sheave against rotation in one direction, and a chain adapted to be anchored at one end adjacent said reciprocatory member, said chain cxtemling to and around the sheave of the second named chain guide, then extending to and around the sheave ot the first named chain guide and finally extending from the latter to be pulled each time the first nan'ied guide moves toward the second named guide, tor the purpose oi? taking up slack in the chain between the two guides, the ratchet means of said first named guide permitting rotation of the sheave in the proper direction to perform this operation, the ratchet means of the second named guide then acting to hold its respective sheave against turning.
