Be it known that I, JOHN LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Umbrella Great, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a novel construction of an umbrella geat and consists of a plurality of U or yoke shaped members which are pivotally mounted on the butt of the stretcher of the umbrella and adapted to be positioned and secured in the rib thereof, said members projecting from their bearings on the stretcher in opposite directions therefrom, so as to provide a length'- enedseat for applying the stretcher to the rib, and being held in position by a clip which embraces the rib and yoke members and clamps the latter to the rib, thus connecting the stretcher to the rib in a iirm and durable manner, preventing it from being wrenched laterally from the rib, the piercing of the rib for a'pivot pin as heretofore practiced being obviated and the invention being also applicable to a parasol.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown vin the accompanying drawings, forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists may be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a portion of the rib of an umbrella, and 2 designates a portion of the stretcher thereof, the end portion of the latter being compressed forming the flattened neck or butt 3, as well known in the art.

On the outer end of said butt 3 are mounted the plurality of U shaped members 4L, each of which consists of the legs 5 and the crowns 6, the klatter freely occupying the transverse opening or eyes 7 in .said butt, it being noticed that the walls of said eyes form a common bearing for said crowns 6 and permit the stretcher to turnl on said bearing during the opening and closing of the umbrella, itbeing noticed that said legs 5 are seated' in the channel of the rib and extend parallel with the latter, and are inclosed by the walls of said channel, and in contact therewith.

In order to retain the legs 5 in position and prevent displacement thereof, I employ the clip 8 which consists of a piece of metal or other suitable material, which is bent around `the outer bottom and side surfaces rof the rib and provided with the inturned terminals or lips 9, which are deflected downwardly as seen in Figure 5, so as to be positioned between the legs 5, and the butt 3, thus tightly holding the parts in assembled position, said lips being separated to permit the butt 3 to oseillate between them in the motions of the stretcher in opening and folding of the umbrella and permitting the stretcher to fold into the rib when the umbrella is closed.

It will be noticed that both the U shaped members 4 are held by the clip 8, in the channel of the rib, thus equalizing the connection of the stretcher with the rib o-n opposite sides of the eyes 7, and the legs 5 form aligning continuities of each other, thus providing a double device and conse quent elongated surfaces for connecting the stretcher with the rib, each section of said device being positioned at different placesnu, Je

not pierced and so weakened by openings to receive a pivot pin, and that while such piercing and pin are obviated, the firm and reliable conection ot the stretcher with the rib is secured.

The limbs 5 of the yoke Liare preferably made o'f material halt round in cross section, as will be understood trom the right hand end 5 ot Figures l and 6, and it will be un derstood that the inturned lips r) are slotted so to accommodate the crowns G of the yokes 4, when said parts are assembled as seen in Fig. 5, the slots being omitted from Fig: 3, tor clearness ot illustration. The yokes i are duplicates so that the eX- pense ot manufacture and assembling is obviously reduced to a minimum. I am aware that it has been heretofore proposed to employ a single lol-shaped member, having 'Hattened ends, but my device possesses advantages thereover` sinfe halt round wire `gives greater strength, and as there is always a possibility of a single joint showing some detect, the assembly ot two yokes in the manner described offers a greater' margin of safety. Furthermore, the assembly oi the prior art requires two operations, whereas the assembly ot my present invention requires but a single operation. rlhere is also added strength in my present device, because with the single yoke of the prior art only two ends thereof can be clipped, whereas with the double yoke of my present invention four ends can be clipped, thus producing a very rigid and durable construction.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the- .features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statementot the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been :found in practice to `give satisiactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible oi modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope oiithe invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters iatent, is

l. In an umbrella, a. stretcher having an eye through the butt thereof, a plurality ot ishaped yokes composed of semicylindrical legs and crowns, said legs and crowns being of the same width throughout, the convexed portions oi said legs being juxtaposed to each other, said yokes being positioned on said butt with their legs extending oppositely to leach other in the longitudinal direction ot the stretcher, and the crowns of said yokes having a common bearing in said eye.

2. In an umbrella, a stretcher having an eye in the butt thereof, a plurality of U shaped yokes composed of semicylindrical lees and crowns, said legs and said crowns be ofthe same width throughout, the conve.. .d portions ot the said legs being juxtaposed to each other, said yokes being positioned on said butt with their Alegs projecting` oppositely to each other in the longitudinal direction of the stretcher, and the crowns ot said yokes having a common bearing in said eye, a rib, and a clip clamped 0n said rib and having inwardly deflected terminal lips engaging the legs of said yokes to secure the latter in position.
