BULING DEVICE.
Application mama-'26, 1925. Serial No. 32,966.
To all whommay concern:
'Be it known thati'we; JOHN I-IAGAN and Josnrn E. HAGAN, both citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at New York, in the county of New York and State l! and by screwing up the screw 14; these of New York, and at Akron, in the county of Summit, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in a Ruling Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ruling devices for ruling multiple lines and has special reference to a multiple point pen and pencil.
One object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to pro vide an improved pencil holder for such devices.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention. consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 1s an enlarged detail section on the line 33 of Figure 1, the pencil points being omitted.
Figure 4: is an enlarged detail view of the pen point.
Figure 5 is an end view of one form of shank or barrel for the point.
Figure 6 is a detail plan view of a portion of a second form of shank or barrel for the pen points.
Figure 7 is an end view form.
In carrying out this invention there is of the second provided a stem or staff, to one end of which,
is secured a head 11 of blunt wedge shape. Extendin through this head is a series of pencil lead receiving openings 12 and the head is slotted at each opening as at 18. The openings are located somewhat above the center of the head and through the lower part of the head passes a binding screw 14:. On each side of the head is a socket 15 so that a nut 16 may rest therein flush with the side of the head, this nut being transferable fromonesocket to the other so that the crew may be inserted from; either side, thus accommodating either right handed or left handed persons.
In the openings 12 are held pencil leads firmly in position after .minating in a series of individual points 20 formed integrally with the broad flatly curved portion 19, these pen points all being in alinement transversely as shown in Figure 1.
With this device a number of parallel lines may be ruled either in pencil or in ink and it is to be understood that while five pencil points and five pen points have been shown the number may be varied according to the circumstances. Furthermore, it is to be noted that the spacing of the multiple pen points is uniform with the spacing of the lead receiving points. By this means a series of lines may first be ruled in pencil and then gone over in ink, the ink lines coinciding with the pencil lines.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.-
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a
pencil supporting head comprising a block of resilient material having a series of pencil lead receiving openings extending therethrough and having slots extending from one face through said openings, and a set screw extending from side to side of the block below said openings for drawing the sides of the openings together and thereby clamping pencil leads in position in said openings.
2. In a device of the kind described, a pencil supporting head comprising a block of resilient material having a series of pencil lead receiving openings extending there through and having slots extending from one face through said openings, a set screw extending from side to side of the block below said openings for drawing the sides of the openings together and thereby clamping pencil leads in position in said openings, said block having an opening therethrough to receive the screw, said opening terminating in a recess, and a nut held in said recess to engage the threaded end of said screw.
In testimony whereof we afiix our sig natures.
JOHN HAGAN. JOSEPH E. HAGAN.
