DUPLIOATING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST JBRASSEUR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and.
. the diaphragm and the means for carrying out this operation.
Another object of my invention is to simplify the construction and' to reduce .the number of relatively movable parts.
Another object of my invention is to provide an ink container which is normally & sealed to prevent deterioration of the ink.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
My said prior application discloses a drum having a diaphragm and an inking pad mounted thereon. There is also a grill structure associated with the pad and dia-' phragm for aiding in the'distribution and application of ink to the pad. There is a sealed compartment built in the drum behind the diaphragm and pad. Within this sealed compartment there is pivoted an open ink trough, which is intended to be filled with ink by pouring the ink through a filling hole in one wall of the sealed compartment. This trough normally remains stationary, while the drum and the sealed com: partment revolve. "When it is desired to supply ink to the 'pad and diaphragm, the trough is tilted by means of a member accessible from outside of the cylinder, so that ink is spilled from the trough and falls on the pad and diaphragm. The walls of'the compartment are so arranged that when the diaphragm and pad are directly above the ink trough, ink will fall and flow back into the open trough.
In'accordance with my present invention,
I eliminate the open ink trough entirely and in place thereof provide an ink reservoir at fron outside of the drum to establish communication between the reservoir and the interior of the compartment. The reservoir in this case revolves with the drum and the sealed compartment. The arrangement is such that when the reservoir is uppermost, by opening the valve mechanism,-ink drops from the reservoir upon .the inking pad and diaphragm, and, when the valve mechanism is closed, such supply of ink is cut oft". When the position is reversed and the compartment is over the reservoir, the arrangement issuch that ink will flow by gravity back into the reservoir'when the valve 'mechanism is open. The valve mechanism may be set to supply ink constantly at a given rate and may be opened and closed whenever desired. v
In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had, attention is here by directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis application and illus trating one possible embodiment of mypinvention. 1

Fig. 1 'is a vertical sectional view, taken on a radial plane,-.of a. duplicatin I machine drum having associated therewith inking means embodying my invention, and is taken on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, partly in vertical section, the section being taken on the line 2-'2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a fragment of the construction, showing the valve mechanism, and is taken on the line 3,-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, which shows the drum and inking means revolved there is shown of a suitable, handle 4 or by power means, if preferred.
The drum Comprises end plates 5 and 6, which are joined and held in position by a perforated diaphragm 7 and by suitable connecting rods (not shown). .The diaphragm 7 carries a suitable inking pad 8 and stencil-sheet 9 (see F ig. Diaphragm 7 is sealed, as by solder or otherwise, to flanges 10 and 11 of the side plates 5 and 6. Diaphragl-n 7 comprises one surface of a sealed compartment which-is constructed Within the drum 1. This compartment is formed by side plates 11 and 12, which have inwardly-directed flanges l3 overlapping and sealed to the inner surface of the diaphragm 7 adjacent its side edges. Extending between the two ends of the diaphragm 7 and between the side plates 11 and 12 is a cover plate 14, which has upwardly-directed flanges overlapping and sealed to the ends of the diaphragm 7 on theinside and has downwardly-directed side flanges 16 which lie againstand are sealed to the side plates 11 and 12. Plate 14 inclines upwardly from each end to the center, and along this raised center lineis provided with a series of per-- forations 17', which extend substantially the full width of the plate. Over this line of apertures and parallel therewith, I place a slidable block or valve member 18, which hasa series of vertical perforations 19, which may be brought into and out of registry with the perforations 17 by sliding movement, of block 18 with respect to plate 14. I confine block 18 along each side between two channel members 20 and 21, each of which has a lower flange 22 resting on and sealed to the top of the plate 14. Each of members 20 and 21 also has an upper flange 23, upon which the bottom of an ink reservoir 24 is seated and sealed. The ink reservoir 24 may be of any desired shape, but preferably has a low portion extending along and directly over the block 18. This portion is supplied with a series of perforations 25, aligning with the perforations 17 in the cover plate 14. The reservoir 24 is supplied with a filling opening 26 and suitable cap therefor 27.
If desired, reservoir 24 may comprise a tubular member having its ends sealed by extensions of plates 11 and 12, which have flanges 28 overlapping and sealed to the edges of the tubular member, and which have portions 29 doubled in and interposed between the bottom of the reservoir 24 and the plate 14, and rest on plate 14, as at 3O.
In this Way the reservoir is firmly and rigidly supported 1n place with respect to the sealed compartment 31, which is formed between the cover plate 14 and the diaphragm 7.
At one end the valve block 18 carries a spindle 32,. which extends through the side plate 12 and the drum plate 6. On the end of the spindle 32 is secured aknob or handle 33, and the intermediate portion of the spindle 32 carries. a sleeve 34, which has a reduced portion 35v toward the handle 33. A block 36 is securedto the Wall 12, and in this blockv is placed suitable packing 37, which is held in place by a threaded cap 38. ()n the outside of wall 6 is secured a finger 39, the end of which is disposed in the path of the enlarged portion of the hub 34. The arrangement is such that, by grasping the handle 33, the slide valve 18 may bemoved inwardly and outwardly to the extent" permitted by the reduced portion of the sleeve 34. The arrangement is suchthat, when the knob and valve member 18 are pushed into the limit, the perforations 19 in the member 18 register neither with the holes 17 in the cover 14 nor with the holes 25 in the reservoir 24,-and no ink may flow from the res ervoir into the compartment 31 therebeneath. lVhen the handle 33 and valve member 18have been moved outwardly to the limit, there is complete alignment of the perforations 17, 19 and 25, and the fastest flow of ink is permitted from'the reservoir into'the compartment 31, or from the come partment 31 back into the reservoir when the drum is turned upside down, as in Fig. 5. Less "than complete alignment of the valve holes 19 with the holes17 and 25 maybe obtained by adjusting the knob 33 and slides 18 into intermediate positions, andin this .way the feed of ink may be regulated in various amounts.
If the valve 18 is set into open or partly open condition and left there during the operation of the machine, a certain quantity of ink will drop upon all. parts of the diaphragm7 as the diaphragm passes under the reservoir. If this continuous inking is desired to be stopped, it is merely necessary to push the knob 33 inwardly to the limit and no further ink will be fed. If it is desired to apply ink to only a certain portion of the diaphragm 7. this can be readily accomplished by turning the drum so that that particular part of thediaphragm is immediately below the valve 18 and then opening the valve until the desired quantity of ink has dropped upon this portion of the diaphragm. The whole diaphragm may be inked by' oscillating the drum so that all portions of the diaphragm come directly be neath the valve 18 while it is pen.
In order to prevent thickening and delc rioration of a surplus of ink on the diaphragm when the machine is to stand idle for awhile, the drum may be rotated to place the reservoir 24 beneath the compartment 31, and by the action of gravity and by reason of the shape of the cover 14, the surplus ink will drip and drain to the valve 18, so that, by opening this valve, the ink the reservoir.

Preferably, immediately behind the diaphragm 7, within the compartment 31 is placed a grill 40, such as is described in my said prior application. This grill aids in I distributing and supplying ink to the diaphragm.
As many changescould be made in the above construction and as many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is':-
1. lln a device of the character-described, the combination with a rotatable stencilduplicating. drum, of an ink reservoir mounted} in the drum, aninking. padcarr-ied on the drum for rotation therewith and vertically about the ink reservoir, said reservoir having an outlet and valve mechanism associated wlth said reservoir tor opening and closing a passageway for ink to and from the reservoir, to permit and to prevent the dropping of ink from thereservoir upon the inking pad when the pad is beneath the reservoir. 2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a rotatable stencilduplicating drum, of an ink reservoir mounted in the drum, a diaphragm carried on the drum for rotation therewith and vertically about the ink reservoir, said reservoir having an outlet and valve mechanism associated with said reservoir for opening and closing a passageway for ink to and from the reservoir, to permit and to prevent the dropping of ink from the reservoir upon the diaphragmwhen the diaphragm iS-beneath 3. In a device of the character described, the combination ofa rotatable stencil-duplicatingdrum, a diaphragm comprising a portion of the surface of the drum, a scale compartment within the drum, said vdiaphragm comprising a portion of the surface of said compartment, an ink reservoir on the opposite side of said compartment from the diaphragm and rotatable with said compartment and drum, and adjustablevalve mechanism interposed between saidreservoir and said compartment.
9. In a device of the character described, in combination, a rotatable stencil-du heating drum, a sealed compartment within the drum, a diaphragm comprising a portion of the surface of said compartment, an ink reservoir on the opposite side of said compartment from the diaphragm and rotatable with said compartment and drum, and adjustable -valve mechanism interposed between said reservoir and said compartment, said compartment and reservoir having series of aligned perforations, and said valve mechanism including a member having corresponding perforations and slidable to place said perforations into and out of alignment with the perforations in said drum and reservoir, said slidable member having a spindle extending from'one end thereof, asleeve on said spindle having a reduced portion, and a stop member secured to the drum and cooperating with said sleeve to limit movement of said slidable member.
