a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradley, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Plow, of which the following. is a specification.
The invention pertains to plows, and has for its general aim the provision of a plow bottom which is especially adapted for use in tractor'drawn plows wherein it is very desirable, if not essential, that the weight of the plow be reduced 'toa minimum. With this aim in view, one object of theinvention is to provide a construction for plow bottoms in which the frog customarily employed is eliminated. A further improvementhas to do with the constructionof the plow point in a manner such that its weight is reduced without sacrificing strength and rigidity.
Still another object is to make the plow bottom of such construction that the plow share-and point may be detached at will for purposes'of repair or removal.
A general object is to'reduce the cost of manufacture while at the same time increasing the efficiency, of the plow.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective viewlof a plow bottomcon structedbin accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an underside perspective view of the same.

The 'plow'botto'rn selected for purposes of illustration, comprises generally apoint 7 a share blade 8, a mold-board 9, and a land side .10. These parts are rigidly secured together in the ,proper'relation'and sup ported from the plow frame by means of a beam 11 having a downwardly curved lower end portion which, in accordancewith the present'invention, is employed 'inpla'ce of the usual frog as the means to wliicli the parts may be secured for support.

To lower the cost andreduce the weight, I cast the point, and in'so doing I form within it a socket adapted snugly to receive the lower end of the beamll which latter is especially shaped for this purpose. As shown clearly in Fig. 4:, my improved point comprises a landside portion 12 commonly termed among the trade a gunnel and a share portion 113 of a generally triangular shape (Fig.3) integrally joined at one edge w-iththe gunnel 12. At their forward ends, the gunnel12 and share portion 13 terminate in a'flat point 14 (Fig. 2).
At thelower edge of the gunnel 12 I provide an inwardly extending fiangele be tween which and the under surface of the share portion 13 of the point is formed the socket adapted to receive the lower end of the beam 11 which latter tapers to a point as shown in broken lines at 16 in Fig. 1, in order to engage snugly in the point with a wedging action when the point is drawn rearwardly in a manner to be presently described. v v I For the purpose of securing the share blade 8 to the point 1, I provide in the construction of the latter a rearwardly extend ing lug' 17 whose upper surface is substantially flush with the lower surface of the share portion'13 of the point. Said lug 1s apertured as at 18 to receive a bolt 19 passing through the forward end of the share blade and rigidly securing the latter and the point together with their adjoining ends in abutting'edge relation.
The mold-board 9 is secured to the share 8 and to the beam 11 by suitablemeans. Thus I employ a plate 20 having a flange 21 at one end rigidly secured as by means of a bolt 22 to the beam 11 and by bolts The latter bolt also serves to fasten upon the under side of the mold-board and upon the under side of the plate 20, an angular bracket 25 having a portion 26 adapted to engage with the rear edge of the plate 20. Said bracket is apertured to receive the threaded shank of a rod 27 anchored at'28 to the underside of the shareblade 8 near the rear edge thereof. Said plate 20 is so secured to the mold-board t h a t its forward portion underlies the rear edge of the share blade as well as the rear 1 corner of the share portion of the point 14, and the threaded end of the rod 27 passing through the bracket is provided with a nut 29 whereby the parts may be drawn together.
To assist in holding the share and moldboard in proper relation, I provide a pair of blocks 30 and 31 secured respectively to the share blade and mold-board, upon the undersides thereof, as by means of bolts 32 and 33. These blocks have respectively, portions projecting beyond the edges of the parts to which they are secured, as shown clearly in Fig. 2', and thus coact to hold the parts in alinement.
The mold-board 9 is further secured to the beam 11 by means of a substantially U- shaped bracket 34 and bolts 35 and 36 entered respectively through the beam and the mold-board.
The land'side 10 is in the form of a flat blade which is secured to the outer side of the beam 11 near its lower end as by means of the bolt 22 and a bolt 37 (Fig. 1). This blade is made of a thickness approximately equal to that of the gunnel 12 of the point and extends rearward-1y in continuation of the gunnel beyond the rear edge of. the beam 11'.
It will be observed that the point let, the mold-board 9 and the landside 10 are all secured directly to the beam 11, and that the latter serves through a simple downward and forward extension, the function of the frog heretofore employed in securing the parts together. As a result, a substantial reduction in the weight of the plow bottom is effected.
It will be evident that by reason of the fact. that the point is cast it may be shaped as desired to form the socket to receive the tapered end or toeof the beam. As a further advantage resulting from casting the point, it is possible to reduce its weight. Also the means for detachably connecting the share blade to the mold-board is simplified. Thus the h1g1? renders it possible to secure the point and share blade together withonly one connecting rod as distinguished from the two rods previously employed in plows of the detachable share type.
I claim as my invention:
1. A plow bottom comprising, in combination wth a beam having a downwardly and forwardly extending toe portion, a point constructed to provide a socket adapted to receive said toe portion of the beam, a mold board secured to the beam rearwardly of the point, a share blade rigidly but detachably secured to the point at the rear end thereof, and means for detachably securing the share blade to the mold-board so as to hold such parts in alinement, said means consisting of a rod having one end fastened to the share blade and a device for fastening the opposite end of the rod to the mold-board adapted to place the rod under tension.
2. The combination with a plow beam having a forwardly extending toe portion at its lower end, a point having a socket adapted to receive said toe portion of the beam, a mold-board rigid with the beam, a share blade, means connecting the share blade to the mold-board adapted to exert a rearward pull upon the share blade, and means for detachably connecting the share blade to the point whereby when the share blade is drawn rearwardly, the point is also drawn rearwardly upon the beam.
3. A plow bottom comprising a point cast to provide a gunnel for the landside portion and the share portion, said gunnel having an inturned flange at its lower edge adapted to form with the share portion a socket having wa-ll's converging toward the forward end of the point, said socket being adapted to receive a supporting member rigidly secured to the plow frame, a share blade having its forward edge detachably secured to the share portion of the point in abutting edge relation thereto, and means for exert ing a rearward pull on the share blade and thereby drawing the point onto said sup port.
4. The combination with a support adapted to be secured directly to a plow frame and having a forwardly extending toe portion at its lower end, a mold-board rig d with one side of said support, a lan'dside secured directly to the opposite side of said support, a share blade having a connection with the mold board in abutting edge relation thereto, and a point adapted to fit directly over the toe of said support and connected rigidly with the forward edge of the share blade, said connection between the share blade and the mold-board being adapted to draw the share blade rearwardly relative to the mold-board and thereby through the connection between the share blade and plow point to draw the latter onto said toe.
5. The combination with a plow beam having a downwardly and forwardly extending toe portion, a landside secured directly to one side of said beam rearw'ardl'y of the toe portion, a mold-board, means for securing the mold-board directly to the opposite side of said beam including a plate secured to the underside of the moldboard near its forward edge and having a flange secured directly to the beam, said plate having a portion extending beyondthe forward edge of the mold-board, a share blade, a rod secured at one end to the share blade near the rear edge thereof and at its other end to the mold-board near the forward edge thereof,said rod being adapted to underlie said plate and having means for exerting a rearward pull upon the share blade, and a plow point adapted to fit directly upon the toe of the beam and rigidly secured to the share blade at the forward end of the latter.
6. A plow bottom comprising, in combination with a beam adapted to be secured directly to the plow frame and having a downwardly and forwardly extending por tion near its forward end tapering to a point, a landside secured directly to the beam near its lower end but rearwardly of said point, a mold-board, means for securing the mold-board to the opposite side of said beam including a plate secured upon the underside of the mold-board near its forward edge, said plate being also secured directly to said beam and having its forward edge portion extending beyond the forward edge of the mold-board, a plow point having a landside or gunnel portion and a share portion providing a socket between them adapted to receive the point of the beam while the rear end of the share portion overlies one end of said plate, said plow point having a lug on its underside extending rearwardly therefrom, a share blade having its forward end abutting the rear edge of the share portion of the point and rigidly secured to said lug, a bracket rigid with the .mold-board, a rod secured at one end to the share blade and entered vat its other end through said bracket, said rod being arranged to underlie said plate, and a nut on the rod adjacent the bracket adapted to draw the share blade rearwardly relative to the mold-board and thereby draw the plow point onto the beam.
