Be it known that I, KARL 'ScHMU'rZ, la citizen of the United States, andresident of NewYork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fabric- TorkingrImplements, of which the following is a specification. j j

The invention relates to fabric working implements in which the materials used may be conveniently supported for manual operation. i"

More particularly the invention relates to means for securely holding scarfs or other fabrics, together with the necessary thread or yarn therefor, whereby the fabrics may be manually fringed `or otherwise ornamented. f

An object of the invention is to provide means for suitably holding both the fabric and the thread in adjustable' relation with each other.

A further object is to provide a clamp arranged to yieldingly engage the fabric with sufficient `tension to'hold the latter against displacement, and also to provide a detachable resilient locking means therefor that Vmore particularly set forth.

In the drawings numeral 10 designates a suitable base plate arranged to serve Aas a member against which the fabric or material operated upon is clamped, and upon this plate is secured a hinge member 11 having a `projecting leg provided with a hinge-pin 12, the hinge member being secured to the plate by the screws 13.

Pivotally secured pin 12, is a clamp bar 14, the opposite or ,free and of vwhich is shaped to :forni pair at one end by the hingeof spaced convex clamping jaws 15, provided with stop grooves 16. The clamp bar 14 is further provided with a resilient clamping `face 17 preferably of soft rubber.

Adjacent the free end of the clamp bar is a latch plate 18, secured to the base plate 10 by the screws 19, the latchplate 18 having a pair of spaced Vhinge-projections 2O provided With a pin 21, the latter being pivotally connected to thelower end 22 of the spring-rod 23. Adjacent its lower end the' spring-rod ris provided with an enlarged head 24 forming at its upper end a shoulder 25 which is adapted to engage as a stop side edge of the bearing formed in the screwy opposite Yside edge of the vbearing formed in the screw-cap and a guide flange 30v fixed to the free end of the spring-rod 23. As thus mounted ythe inner wall of the tubular grip member 27 is slidably engaged by the flange 30 and the spring-rod 23 is slid'able Within the bearing of the screw-*cap 26, the latter being also provided with ai' pair of V-shaped projections 32 disposed to engage the stopegrooves 16 formed in the jaws 15 of the clamp bar 14.

Under action of the spring 29 the inward movement of the spring-rod 23 is limited by the shoulder thereof, andon the pivotal connection pin 21 of the `latch-plate V18 therod in its assembled relation with'the grip member 27 isY adapted to swing for detachable engagernent` with the jaws 15 of the clampbar 14. In its clamping engagement the grip member 27 is lnanually raised against the action of the spring by means of the finger-grips 28 4and is then swung into the vertical position shown in Figure 2, the

latch-arms 31 and projections 32 sliding over the convex surfaces of thevjaws to urge and hold the spring under compression as the projections on the arms enter the stopgrooves 16. Y j

By suitably proportioning the strength of the spring 29 the desired clamping action may be effected between the base-plate 10 oppositely projecting latch arms'l, having and the face 1T of the clamp member ist for holding the fabric or work under necessary tension.

For adjustably holding the thread with respect to the fabric a thread-bai; 33'; is provided, having

34 and 35 constituting supporting members, the latter one 35 serving as a hinge member pivotally mounted in the clip fixed to the base l0 by one ot' the screws 13, the bar 33 being disposed in a substantially horizontal position and adapted to loosely support one or more spools of thread or yarn.

In operation the grip member 27 is swung clear of the clamp bar lil, which latter is then raised and the scart or fabric to be operated upon laid upon the base plate l0. The clamp bar is then lowered and its free end engagedr by the grip member.y a comparatively light spring action ot the latter only being required to effect the necessary clamping action by reason of the resilient rubber facing 17 which engages the work and protects it against injury.

ln its working position the portion ot the fabric operated upon` overhangs in clear relation the clamping members, and the thread is manually drawn Afrom a spool carried by the bar 33 and introduced in well-known manner into and through the fabric by a conventional needle.

lVhat l claim as my iinff'ention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A fabric working implement comprising a base, a clamp bar hinged at one end to said base and provi/ded at its opposite end `with a convex clamping jaw, and a grip member pivotally connected to the base and :gidapted to swing inwardly to engagethe convo-XV jaw and effect the clamping action oit the bar.

A fabric working implement comprising a basel a clamp bar hinged at oneiend to said base and provided at its opposite end with a convex clamping jaw. and a grip member pivotally connected to said base and adapted to swing inwardly to engage the conve); jaw and effect the claniping action ot said bar,v the said gripI member being resilient with respect to its pivotal connection.

3. A fabric working implement comprising a base, a clamp bar hinged at one end to said base and provided at its opposite end with a clamping jaw, andk a grip member adapted to engage the clamping jaw of said bar and exert a clamping action between the latter and said base, the said grip member being pivotally connected to said base.

A fabric working implement comprising a base, a clamp bar hinged at one end tosai'd base and provided with a resilient clamping face, and a grip member detach,- ably engaging the free end oi' said clamp bar and adapted to effect clamping action between the latter and said base, the said grip member being pivotally connected to said base.

7. In a fabric working implement including ay clamp-bar therefor. tubular grip member9 a cap detachably connected to one end of said grip member-,- a spring-rod slidable in said cap and extending into said tubular grip merriber,y a spring enclosed wit-hin said grip member and, sui-'rounding said spring-rod, connections between said spring and spring-rod whereby the latter is inwardly urged within said gripy member, and means connecting the outer end of said spring-rod whereby the grip memberv is adapted rto exert a clampingr action`upon said clamp-bar.
