T (/7Z whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, 1mm Hanna, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroidery-Frame Hold ers for Sewing Machines,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sewing machines, and particularly to work-holder or tambour frame attachments therefor, and comprises means for [)OSli'lOlllnf); and securing the coacting holder members to facilitate the placing and securing of thework therein for subsequent sewing or embroidering operation. The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the novel features pointed out in the claims.
Fig. 1 indicates in side elevation parts of a sewing machine with the coacting members of a work holder shown partly in section, and held in separated position for introduction of the work; a side plate of the table being removed to more clearly disclose the operation of the clamping devices pivotally mounted therein. I
Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the work table with one member of the work holder held in position thereon.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of thework table substantially on the line of Fig. 1.
In the drawings 5 represents the needlebar head and 6 the work table of an ordinary sewing machine adapted for embroidering, the table shown being of known cylindric-al form for operating on tubular material such as seamless knitted stockings, for which my improvements are particularly applicable; it being understood however, that with slight changes, my improvements may be equally applicable to theusual flat work table.
The work holder or tambour frame, as shown, comprises two separable coacting ring members 8 and 9, member 8 fitting within the vertical wall of member 9 and seating against an inwardly extending bottom flange 10 of the latter, which flange preferably projects inward beyond said ring member 8 for engagement of clamping de vices as hereinafter described; and member 8 is provided as shown, with outwardly flaring upright extensions 12, 12, which form Renewed September 25, 1925.
handles for conveniently lifting it into and out of engagement with member 9.
In operating on seamless stockings, the tubular fabric is drawn over the cylindrical work table 6, and holder member9 inserted in such placed tube and both adjusted until the stocking part to be operated upon is embraced within the open central portion of the holder and the latter positioned under the needle, after which the ring member 8 is forced to position to clampingly hold the properly stretched fabric'between the vertical walls of: said coacti ng ring member-sand also between the lower edge of member 8 and top face of inwardly extending flange 10 of member 9.
To facilitate this insertion and placing of the holder within the stocking, I provide the work table 6 with clamping devices 15, 15, and 16, 16, as shown, adapted to. engage with flange extension 10 of ring member 9,
so that the stocking may be readily pushed over said united ring member and table and adjusted to position; and I also provide the needle bar head 5 with spring suspension fingers 17, 17 adapted to hold thereon ring member 8 in raised position above clamped ring member 9 duringsuch positioning of the stocking.
The clamping devices 15, and 16, 16 are preferably arranged on opposite sides of table 6 and each pivotally secured thereto by a screw bolt 20 engaging in the st 'aight side wall portions 21, formed by the flattened forward top face 22 of said table, as
shown; the pair 15 and 16 on each side being arranged to reversely swing on their pivots 20so that their hooked clamping ends 23, 23 will lie below said table face 22 or rise above the latter to engage with flange 10 of ring member 9. l 2 r The actuating means for each pair of clamping devices 15 and 16 is provided as shown, by plates 25, 25 having slots 26, 27 engaging the pivot bolts 20, 20 and slidably mounted thereon between the side walls 21, 21 and their respective pair of devices, 15 and 16; each plate 25 also having vertical slots 28 and 29, slot 28 engaging a stud 30 on its respective device 15 above pivot 20, and slot 29 engaging a similar stud 31 on its respective device 16 below pivot 20, so that movements of said slides will reversely swing each pair of devices 15 and 16 into raised or lowered position with relation to table face 22. a The forward ends of plates 25, 25 project beyond table 6 and have an integral connecting member '32 as shown forming a handle for their joint manipulati0n;-and I preferably provide one or both * slide plates 25, 25 with a spring pressed detent33, as shown, movably-carried with the latter end yielding passing under fixed post 1 35 projecting through slide slot 36, to bear against opposite sides of said post and retain said slides against unintentional. :dis-
placementpat opposite extremes of their movement. Rounded cover plates 37, 3'! are- !mpreferably provided for saidslide plates '25, -i 25and their respective pairs of clamping deuvices 15, 16, 15,16 andthe heads of pivot screwibolts 20, 20, QO-are sunk-thereon as Fshown to present a smooth finished surface wthat willnot catch or tear the fabric loops i as the stockingis drawn over the table and work member 9 held thereon.
- In operatiom work; holder member 8 1s sprung over suspensionfingers 17,?17 tiohold lti;ll1-1'EllS8Cl position, and ii ember 9 placed 1,:011 table-and slidehan'dle -32 pulled out,
which movement, as described, raises the hooked end 23 Off:\2t0l1 pair of'clamping devices 115,;16, 1'5, 16' abovei the table top to engage wvit lrextendedflange-100E id member 9, positioning-the same with respect to. the needle and securely holding it'in pousit-ion for readily pushing the stocking vover Obviously myimprovements are adapted ;-for flat fabrics as well as tubular, and for an r -o eration re uirin awork holder or tambourrframe, the temporarily fiiiedIposi- 5 tioning of the separated coacting members thereof on the machine greatly facilitating '1 the:placing andsecuringiofithe;fabric; Also modifications adapting it to various types of machines maybe readily made and I do not desire to limit myself to the specific construction shown and described.
lVhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a sewing machine having a work table and an overhanging needle-bar head, of a work holder coniprising a ring member having an inwardly extending circular flange adapted to seat upon the work table and a work-clan'iping ring member insertable in said flanged ring member, and means for clamping the latter tothe work table comprising clamping devices pivotally secured to the work table and actuating means for swinging said devices into and out of engagement with said inwardlyextended circular flange.
2. The combination with a sewing machine having a vwork table-and an overhanging needle-bar head, of a work holder comprising a ring member having an inwardly extending circular flange adapted Ytowseat upon the work'table and awork-clamping ring-member insertable in said flanged ring member, and means for clamping thelatter to the work table comprisingclamping devices pivotally secured to the work table and actuating means for swinging said devices into and out of engagement with said. inwardly extended circular flange said. needle Hbarhead beingprovided with means for holding said 'insertable needle-clamping member 111 inoperativeposition.
; 3, The combination with ausewing 4112b chinehaving a; work tablerand anoverhangng needle bar head, of a :workholder comprising a ring member having an, inwardly extending circular flange adapted to seat upen the work table and a work-clamping ring member insertable in said flanged ring member, andmeans for clamping the: latter to the work table-comprising clampingdevices pivotally secured to the .work-table and an actuating plate therefor slidably moiuitcd upon the work table and engaging, said pivoted devices so as to swing the lattelhinto or out of engagement with said inwardly extended circular flange.
Intestimony whereof I'atfix my signature.
