CARD-INDEX DEVICE.
Application tiled November 24, 1922. Serial No. 608,018.
To all whom #may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, JAMES H. RAND, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonawanda, in the county .of Erie and Stateef New York, have invented a new -and useful Improvement in Card-Index Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
tion of the person using the indexv to the' card or holder or tocertain dates or data displayed thereon. Certain of these ,devices have been of such form as to be inserted or wedged in the pocket, intendin to be frictionally maintained therein. thers have had portions adapted to engage an' edge of a slip or label in the sheath and to be withdrawn endwise with the slip or label from the sheath. In these devices as heretofore used, the signals become misplaced, in some of them they do not stay in the sheath unless there is a slip or card in the sheath to cooperate with the signal, and in others, if the slip or card is withdrawn from the sheath for examination or for work to be done thereon, the signal becomes detached 'from the sheath vand is mislaid or lost.
The objects of the present invention are to provide aninsert-receiving member having a pocket and a signal which will not become mis laced upon removal of the insert from t e pocket but which is readilyv movable to desired positions in said pocket; also to provide improvements in devices of this kind in the other respects hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Fi 1 is a plan view of an insert-receiving mem r embodying the invention.
*Fig 2 1s a plan view thereof showing a card 1n process of removal 'from thepocket.
Flg. 3 is a perspective view of the movable-slgnal member.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 1f-4, Fig. 1, on
an enlarged scale.
Fig. 5 1s a portion of a sectional perspective view thereof. 1
Fig. 6 is a portion of a sectional perspective view showing the movable signal member in rocess of insertion into the pocket.
Fig. is a section on line 7 7, Fig. 5, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 8is a section on line 8 8, Fig. 6, on
l an enlarged` scale.
Fig. 9'is a portion of a plan view illustrating the method of insertion of the movable signal member into the pocket.
The present invention includes a movable signal member and a signal-holding member or part which is preferablya fixed part of a card, label, slip or other insert holder and having means for permitting ready and rapid attachment of the movable signal member, means for securely holding the movable signal member in position irrespective of the movements of the insert inthe pocket and at the same time permitting ready intentional removal of the movable sgnal.member.
In the drawings, 10 designates an index i i or record member such as. a card lor card holder preferably having means for attachment to a support as forexamp'le, tongues 11, and havmg at one edge a sheath or pocket-forming part 12. The sheath Ior pocket-forming part 12 is preferably closed at its ends as by means of staples 13 which attach it to the card or holder and is pref-l erably provided with a relatively'free upper edge 14 under which a card 'or other insert A may be introduced into the pocket.
The member 10 is formed so as to permit -the ready insertion of a movable signal member into the pocket' andthe signal is adapted to be firml 'but releasablyheld in position in the oc et by means of a part on the signal whic embraces the member 10.
In the embodiment shown, the edge 15 of the member 10 which extends into the pocketis recessed or notched asat 16. This recess or notch preferabl extends aI short distance above the upper e :ge of the pocket so as to permit insertion of an end of the movable signal device into the recess or notched porlosl tion above the edge of the pocket. A movable signal member is provided. This movable signal member may be of appro size or form and may be of any desir iate color f' i or bear suitable data for indicating the desired information and isprovided with a part adapted to positively engage a parte;
and at the same time are maintained in uniform positions relative to the lower edges of their respective pockets and are not liable to work up in the pockets and get out of position and fail to function as they should. In the form illustrated, the movable member comprises a tab 17 of suitable material. This movable member has a body 18 which displays the desired signal andpreferably has a part or parts formed to straddle a part of the meml ber 10. For this purpose, as illustrated, the
movable signal member may be provided with a4 hook,19 having a part extending upwardly a distance from the bend in the material of the movable member, as at 20, in the same general direction as the face of the body part 18. As best illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, this construction results in the hooked end of the movable signal member, straddling the lower edge of the stationary member 10, and when the movable signal member is in position in the pocket, the walls of the pocket 'prevent any downward or outward movement ofthe movable signal member suiiiciently to prevent its disengagement. from the edge of the member 10. This permits of insertion of a card or label slip between the' signal member and the member 10 and the removal of that card or slip without any. likelihood of disengaging the movable signal member from the member on which it is supported. At the same time, when desired, the movable signal member may be readily shifted to a position in which it registers with the notched portion 16 ofthe member '10, whereupon it may be pulledv upwardly and withdrawn fromjhe pocket. The provision .of the recessed vor notched portion 16 in the member 10 does not'interfere with the display of the signal at that part of the card or holder for the reason that lif a card or slip is in position in the pocket, the movable signal member when it reaches the notched or recessed portion of member 10, instead of being released so that it may be drawn upwardly and out of the pocket, is in engagement with the lower edge of the card or slip in the pocket and will be maintained in position in the pocket until such time as the card or slip is removed. By reason of the positive engagement-of the movable signal member around a reatively strong and rigid portion Aof the card or holder 10, the signal device,l when in any other position than lthat just mentioned, is not released or pulled out by withdrawal of a card or slip from the pocket, its position and retention in the pocket is not affected by any springingx outwardly ofthe outer wall of the pocket,and there is no tendency to break or damage the holder or pocket as in the case of frictional wedging devices inserted into the pocket and maintained by reason ofthe friction between those devices and the sides of the holder or of the pocket.
I claim as my invention I 1. In anindex device, a holder member having a sheath fixed thereon, and an indicating member having a part slidably engaging an edge of said holder member in y said sheath, said holder member having a recessed portion extending from within said sheath to a point beyond said sheath for permitting withdrawal of said indicating member from slidable engagement with said holder member for permitting insertion of said indicating member in said sheath.
2. In an indexv device, a holder member having a sheath thereon forming a pocket `at one side of said member, a separate indicating 'member movable in said pocket, said indicating member having a part engaging an edge of said holder member in said sheath, said holder member having 4a recessed portion extending from within said pocket to a-point beyond said'pocket whereby said indicating member may be inserte in and removed from said pocket;
3., In an index device, a member having a sheath thereon. said sheath forming'a pocket at a side of said member, a signal having a part for engaging a part of said member in said sheath, said member having a recessed portion whereby said signal may be inserted in said sheath.
4. In an index device, an insert holder having an insert-receiving pocket formed along an edge thereof, a signal adapted to enter and be moved in said pocket. and interengaging parts on said holder and on said .signal for retaining said signal in said pocket. said holder having a notch in the edge thereof which is disposed insaid pocket and which extends adjacent the outer edge of said pocket wherebv said signal may be inserted and removed from said pocket.
5. In an index device, a member having a sheath forming a pocket thereon, said member having an edge extending in said pocket adiacent the bottom thereof, and a signal having a part for straddling said edge of said member in the pocket. said member having a recess extending from said edge to a point beyond said pocket, whereby said signal may be inserted in said pocket.
