IMPROVEMENT IN LIQUID COMPOUNDS FOR BURNISHING LEATHER GOODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,860, dated October 13, 1874; application filed September 12,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CLAUSEN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Liquid Compound for Burnishing Leather Goods, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to furnish, for
' the purpose of burnishing and finishing the shanks, heels, sole edges of boots, shoes, and other leather articles, a compound which, if added in small quantities to the common burnishing-ink, imparts a deeper color to the same, and preserves a clear black luster for any length of time thereon.
The main defect of the ink generally used for blackin g the shanks and other parts of the boots and shoes is that the same soon loses its original shining black color and takes a grayish hue, especially when the goods are kept stored for some time, presenting thereby a less attractive appearance.
My invention consists of an extract of nutgalls and logwood boiled with castile soap and a small quantity of glycerine, which is mixed with the ink, rendering the same very durable, and appearing with a deep and bright black color for any length of time.
The ingredients and the proportions in which the compound is prepared are as follows: Eight parts of ground nutgalls and ten parts of extract of logwood are boiled up in a suitable quantity of water, under the addition of four parts of castile soap and a small quantity of glycerine, until a liquid of easily-flowing consistency is produced. A few drops of this liquid are mixed with the common ink used for burnishing and finishing leather goods, the ink becoming thereby of superior blacking quality, and imparting a permanent and substantial shine to the parts prepared therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The liquid compound to be used for burnishing andfinishing boots, shoes, and other leather goods, produced of ground nutgalls, extract of logwood, castile soap, and glycerine, mixed I in boiling water, for being added to the common burnishing-ink in use, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
