PATENT OFFICE.

" monnn.
Appllcatlon'filed March 16, 1922. 'Serial as. 544,178.
To allavlwmit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER L. SCHWARTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Ironers, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in ironers,
. power driven ironers adapted for foot operv away.
.ation.
The object is to provide a power driven ironer comprising a rotatable roll and a movable shoe, asupport for one end of the roll so arranged that garments of greater. width than the length of the roll may be.
easily ironed in that clearance from'one end is provided. underneath such end of the roll and also to provide a shoe so mounted as to be automatically capable of accommodating itself to varying thicknesses of garments between the shoe .and roll; and, further, in connection with a footoperated shoe, adjustable yielding connections adapted to press the shoe toward the roll.
The above and other objects. together with details of construction will more fully ap-f pear from the following description, appended claim and accompanying drawings, inwhich:
' Fig. 1 is an, end elevation partly broken Fig.2 is a sectional View taken on lin 2'-2 of Fig.1. a r Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my ironer partly broken away.
Fig. 4 's auview taken online of to permit easy operating. Extending underarticularly to improvements in neath the bedof the machine is a shaft 17 to which the foot pedal is connected by means of a long link 18, and a short arm 19 mounted on the shaft, so that depression of the foot pedal willrotate the shaft.
lPivotally mounted at each end of the ma chine is a bell crank arm 20, one end of which extends under the bed of the ironer and is connected with theshaft 17 by means of pivot ed links 21, so that when the shaft is rotated by -the foot pedal the end of the arms engaged by the links are depressed.
The upper ends of the arms 20 areperforated and extending through such perforations are' rods 22. These rods are connected at one endto the shoe, and they are adapted to hold said shoe yieldingly toward the roll by means of spiral springs 23, which encircle the rods and bear at one end against the arms 20 and at the other against a stop 24.. The tension of this spring is regulated by means of a pin 25, which is-received in perforations 26 through the end of the rod 22 that extends beyond the arm 20.
What I claim is: I k In an ironer, a frame provided with a pair of angular supporting arms, a roll supported between said arms to provide free clearance underneath the roll from the, arms,'a pair of 1 standards carried by the frame positioned on the opposite side of the roll, an arcuate shoe 'pivotally mounted between said'standa'rds to be swung toward and away from said roll, pedal operated mechanism, a pair of hell crank levers connected with said pedal operated mechanism to be actuatedthereby, a
pair of connecting links secured to said'shoe,
one extendingslidably through each of said bell crank levers, each connecting link beingprovided with spaced apart stops. one on each side of the bell crank lever, a coil spring encircling' the connecting link between the bell crank lever' and the stop nearest the shoe, to. hold the shoe toward the rolland spring engaging said pedal operated mechanism and exerting pressure thereon to normally hold the shoe away from the roll.
CHESTER. L.- SCHWARTZ.
* adapted to hold the bell'crank lever against the stop farthest from- -the shoe, and .a
