A. BRUCKNER RAG DOLL Filed July 21, 1.92], 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES ALBERT BRT ICKNER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
RAG DOLL.
Application filed July 21, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Bm'ionnnu, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rag Dolls of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dolls and has for its primary object to provide a doll of that general character commonly known as a rag-doll which is of such construction that it will strongly resemble the more expensive dolls having bisque or china heads.
One of the important objects of this invention is to provide a head for rag-dolls having a front or face portion stamped or embossed by suitable dies from papiermach or other suitable composition material'and a packing or stuffing confining fabric constituting the top, rear and side portions of the head and to which a wig is adapted to be applied.
It is also another object of the invention to provide improved means for mounting the head upon the body of the doll so that the head may be adjusted to various positions in accordance with different postures in which the doll is placed.
I propose to attain the above noted objects by means of relatively few simply constructed parts which will not add materially to the selling cost of the ordinary doll of this character.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, combination and relative arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawings wherein I have illustrated the several practical embodiments of the invention and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ragdoll constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the several parts of the doll head and the bust portion in separated relation;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the parts before the wig is applied;
Figure 4 is a rear elevation;
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view show- Serial No. 4%6388.
ing the means for connecting the head to the body of the doll;
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view through the head and bust ortions showing a slightly modified construction, and
Figure 7 is a perspective view ofthe parts seen in Figure 6 separated from each other.
Referring in detail to the drawings and more particularly to Figures 1 to s inclusive, 5 designates the front or portion of the doll head. This face portion is formed of papier-mache or other fibrous composition material by stamping or embossing the same in a manner well known in the art. The outer surface thereof is properly painted or tinted to represent the eyes, cheeks, lips and nose of the doll. The top,
rear and side portions of the doll head are formed from several strips of fabric 6 which are cut in proper shape and size and stitched together along their meeting edges as at '7. These connected sections of fabric confine the packing or stufling material 7 which may consist of hair, cotton or any other equivulent material which may be satisfactorily employed for this purpose. The lower ends of the several pieces of fabric 6 and of the face portion 5 of the doll head are secured to a disc 8 by an adhesive or any other suitable means. This disc is provided with a central opening through which the bolt 1 is loosely engaged, the head of said bolt engaging the upper surface of the disc and preventing the disconnection of the bolt from the disc. The shank of the bolt 9 is disposed through a central opening 11 in the top wall of the bust member 10 to which the fabric walls of the body of the doll are suitably connected. A washer l2 and a wing nut 13 are engaged upon the lower end of said bolt and the wing nut is adjusted to hold the washer 12 in proper frictional engagement with the under side of the top wall of the bust member 10 so as to thereby retain the doll head in any position to which it may be adjusted with respect to the body.
Upon the fabric constituting the rear and side and top portions of the head a wig indicated at 14, may be readily secured by means of a suitable adhesive. In this man'- ner, it will be seen that the improved doll head may be made very realistic, notwithstanding the fact that relatively inexpensive materials are employed in its construct on. By proper treatment the tinted or painted surfaces of the papier-mfich face portion of the, head may be en a plat-1c or high polish. a; pearance of $51 I The visuzn the doll head will then closely resemble a head constructed of bisque. china or other like materials heretofore emplo ed but unlike such materials, i l not acturc break when accidentahv droooer.

\ itagos of the several described embodiments of "he invention will be readily understood. By means of the present imp1-e .'en1ents, a doll may be produced at cost only slightly in excess of that incident to the manufacture of the ordinary rag-doll and which may, therefore. be sold at a price which is considerably less than that of dolls equipped 'on: than when the head is 1 Thus, in this conaccompanvin with movable heads which are provided in that type of doll having movably attached limbs and the head ofwhich isconstructed of bisque, china, porcelain or other relatively expensive material.
lhave herein referred to several constructions which I have found to be very satisfactory in practical use, but it is manifest that these constructions might be modified in *arious minor respects. Accordingly, the privilege is reserved of resorting to all such n te changes in the form construction rela ive arrangement of the several p. s as may be fr... embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as c aimed i i i l. doll-head having a rigid face porc sire portions extending backward from the side edges of the rigid face portion, and an intermediate fabric top and rear portion extending backward from the top edge of the rigid face portion. said side portions and the top and rear portion being stitch d together along their lateral meet edges and each of saidfabric portions attached to the rear edge of saidgface portion a wig attached to each of the fabric portions and a base disc for attaching the head to each of at their said disc at the marginal edge thereof.
A doll of the character described hav ing a head comprising a face portion .of
ihe fabric portions being attached relatively'rigid material and top, side and rear portions of fabrieconfining a stuffing material against said face portion, a wig secured upon the fabric portions of the head, a bust member havin aslot in its wall and meansfor attaching the head to said bust member including a bolt'rotatable and longitudinally shiflable in said slot, and means for fixing said bolt to the head whereby the head may be adjusted to various angular positions with respect tothe body.
3. A doll having a body including a rigid bust member having a spherical portion projecting upwardly, a head for the doll body having a cooperating spherical de pression in a lower portion adapted to slide forwardly and backwardly and turn on the spherical upper portion of the bust, and means for mounting said head upon said hast member for said bodily adjustment for wardly or rearwardly of the median plane of the dollbody and for independent axial rotation in any one of its adjusted positions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, and I have signed my name hereunder.
