Description

Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
EDWARD A. DARBY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GOLF-TEE MARKER.
Application led July 9, 1925.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. DAnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Tee Markers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to golf tee markers.
The position of the tees on golf courses is usually indicated by markers which lay on and cover the grass. The chief objection to such markers is that the grass, which is covered, dries up and dies from lack of air and sunlight and, when the markers are removed, leaves bare spots which impart an undesirable appearance to the teeing greens.
The objects of my invention are to provide a tee marker of strong and simple construction which may be seen from a distance in a tee indicating position; which will .allow sufficient air and sunlight to the grass beneath the marker, and which may be taken apart and packed compactly for transportation or put away in small space.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a tee marker made in accordance with my invention, illustrating its relation to the grass, and
Figure 2 a central section through the tee marker shown in Figure l.
Referring to the drawing, l indicates a standard, 2 a flange at its lower end adapted to abut the ground, 3 a spike depending from the flange and adapted to pierce the ground, 4 a flange at the upper end of the standard, 5 a threaded stud on flange 4, 6 a hood resting on flange 4 and having an opening through which stud 5 extends, and 7 a nut on the stud for securing the hood to the flange. The hood is of substantially semicircular cross section disposed so that its edge 8 is spaced from the grass 9. The hood and standard are preferably made of metal so that they will not break under ordinary use of a tee marker.
To place the marker for indicating the Serial No. 42,378.
position of a tee, spike 3 is driven into the ground until flange 2 abuts its surface as shown in Figure 2. This will keep lower edge 8 of the hood above the grass so that air and sunlight may pass to the grass beneath the hood.
To pack a number of markers for transportation or to put them away in small space, the hoods 6 are removed from the standards 2 by loosening the nuts 7 and packing one hood within the other and laying the standards alongside of each other. This makes a small and compact package for shipment and occupies a small space in storage.
By the use of the marker above described, teeing greens will not he spotted with dead grass when the markers are removed and the markers may be distinctly seen at a distance when in tee indicating position.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise constructionset forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A golf tee marker including a hood of semi-circular cross section; a standard; a
threaded stud on the standard passing through the hood; means on the stud for securing the hood to the standard, and means on the standard for piercing the ground and supporting the hood so that its lower edge is above the grass. l
2. A golf tee marker including a standard; a flange on the upper end of the standard; a stud on the flange; a hood fitting over the Stud and resting over the flange; means on the stud for securing the hood to the flange; a second flange on the lower end of the standard, and a spike depending from said flange.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
EDWARD A. DARBY.
