MANUFACTURE OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
T0 all whom t muy concern.
rlhis invention relates to the manufacture of footwear such as boots and yshoes and parnticularly to the mode of securing theV soles thereto and in mending the same.
ln repairing boots and shoes the existing method requires skilled labor and also tends to mutilate the insole and boot upper, when `nails or rivetsy are used, and it is to avoid such happening and tosimplify the rep-air work tha-t this invention has been devised.
According to the invention, specially pre pared welt and outer soles are provided to gether with a fastening means for connect-` ing saine together. The saine fastening will be used for the lowest lift of the heels, the head of which can be removed when a worn sole or part of the heel is to he replaced. But in order to fully understand the invention reference is made tothe accompanying drawings, in which y Fig. 1 is a plan, from below, of the heel and sole with fastenings.
Fig. 2 shows in transverse ,section a boot upper and the soles attached. Fig. 3 is a like view across the heel.
Fig. 4 illustrates in longitudinal section a boot constructed according to this invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the female member of the fastening, Fig. 51/2 is a sectional view of the same, and
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the bifurcated holding member of the same.
The boot upper 7 is made in the usual way with an insole 8 over which is a sock 9. The welt sole 10 is riveted or is otherwise attached to the insole in the ordinary manner.
but is provided with holes around the edges of the sole countersunk on the inside surface next the insole. In these holes the female member 11 of the fastening is placed. VPlaced over the welt sole is the outer half sole 12 that is provided with lopenings cof countersunk upon the inside surface to re- Applcation filed January 16, 1923. Serial' No. 612,948.
incident with those in the welt sole but countersunk on the outerside. In these openings i the male member i3 ofthe fastening is placed. y Y' 55 Referring tothe fastening', the part 11 is hollow with a conical centre forming an anvil or spreader 14. so that.` when the bifurcated member 1? is inserted in the opening and driven home, its points will be Aspread 60 outwards by the cone and the parts will lock.
`By means of the countersunk openings on the inner side of the welt sole and the same I on the outer side of the half sole 12 each part of thefastening` is conveniently and securely housed and the vtwo soles will be satisfactorily held together when the parts 13 are driven in. The male member may, if desir-l able, be made toV screw into the part 11 for .which purpose each would be provided with a thread.
When the half sole wears itcan be replaced byk another after removing the rivet 13 which, it will be noticed, is contained within the part 11 and thus when removed does not injurethe leather. The head 13 can be quickly separated from the socket 11 by v placing a small lever under the head while the other part remains in the welt sole.
The heel is treated in the same manner, the lifts of same being held together in the usual way except that the last or wearing lift is perforated and countersunk on the outside and the lift next above similarly treated and tain the socket memher 11 into which the rivet 13 is locked through the lowest lift, thus holding the sameV to the heel. Under the sockl 9 and over the heel I place a piece of rubber 15 shaped to the inside of the boot or shoe, in order to impart resiliency to the same. y
Thus, it will bepossible to attach an outer or walking sole, or to replace a worn sole on a shoe, in an extremely simple manner and without special knowledge. The countersinkings in the outer sole are deep enough to entirely receive the heads of the rivets.
Having now ldescribed iny invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isf 4A boot vor shoe having a welt sole secured a to the insole, and provided with eonnteithat passe through the outer sole and i: sinks on the inside surface thereof, an outer driven into he hollow socket and is reeesec half sole, having on its outer-surface counin one of the countei'sinks of the outer half 10 tersinks coincident with those n the Welt sole. sole, ahoHoW socket piece having a central in witnese whereof I ai'x my signature. cone or Spreader in each eountersunk open,- l ngin the Welt sole and n bfureated rivet LESLIE HURST BURROVVS.
