Description

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT BRISBANE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. 7
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES FOR TREATING WOOD FO R PAVING AND OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,788, dated October 13, 1874; application filed March 7, 1874.
T00 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT BRISBANE, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Processes for Treating Wood for Pavements and other purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to Wooden pavements; and the invention consists in rendering the wood to be used for such purposes compact, impervious, and durable by first impregnating it thoroughly with coal-oil or other heavy hydrocarbon, and then subjecting it to pressure, so as to make it solid, or reduce it to a consistency of compact hardness capable of often ing great resistance to Wear.
To make my improved wood for pavements,
I take any description of Woodthe soft and porous varieties answering equally as well, if not better, than the harder. It is then sawed into blocks, of size convenient to be operated upon, and suitable to be afterward reduced to the required form in molds. I then thoroughly impregnate the blocks with coal-tar, by-any of the well-known processes of saturation. When thoroughly saturated, the blocks are then transferred to molds of the required February, 1874.
