Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER SWEENEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM BOURGQYNE BISHOP, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,481, dated November 21, 1876; application filed April 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SWEENEY, of the city, county, and State of New York. have invented a new and Improved Compound for Lubricating and other Purposes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention consists in a compound of plumbago and collodion, to which may be added various other substances for the purpose of increasing its body and power'ot' resistance, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In carrying out my invention I take plumbago, finely pulverized, and add thereto a quantity of collodion sufficient to produce a plastic mass, which can be readily molded, rolled, or pressed into articles of the required form or shape. After having been shaped or molded, the compound is allowed 'to dry and it is ready for use.
This compound, in its simple state, may be introduced intojournal-boxes for light machinery, and it produces a dry luhricator of good quality. It may, however, be also used for other purposes. 1
In order to increase the body and power of resistance of my compound, Ialso mix with it a certain quantity ofpaper-pulp, or other equivalent fibrous material, in about the following proportions: plumbago, two parts, by weight; collodion, two parts, by weight; paper-pulp, two parts, by weight. By forming an intimate mixture of these ingredients a compound is obtained which can be readily brought into any required shape, and which, when dry, is capable to resist a heavy pressure. It can be used with great advantage in journal-boxes for light or heavy machinery, and it may be used either alone or in combination with other materials.
I have also produced a compound of paperpulp and collodion Without the addition of any lubricating material. This compound, however, forms the subject-matter of a separate application for a patent.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A compound for lubricating purposes, consisting of plnmbago and collodion, with paper-pulp or equivalent fibrous material, substantially as described.
This specification signed by me this 18th day of April, 1876.
PETER SWEENEY. Witnesses:
W. HAUFF, R031. E. MILLER.
