Description

Oct. 20, 1925- B. J. STEEN SAFETY RAZOR Filed June 26, 1925 Patented Oct. 20, 1925.
,- UNITED STATES 3112031) '1. STEEN, or sax ANTONIO, rnxas. sArE'rY molt.
. Application filed June 88, 1925. Serial Io. 88,890.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I Buronn J. STEEN, a citizen of the United State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in a Safety Razor, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety razor.
. One object of the invention is to provide a razor of the character described formed "to receive the conventional type of blade, now in common use, and embodying also means whereby the blade can be easily sharpened without removal from the razor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety razorwhich is of simple construction, and may be cheaply produced and whose blades may 'be qulckly and easily sharpened when the same becomesdull. 1
With the above and other ob'ectsin view this invention has particular relation to 'certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification, and
illustrated theaccompanying drawings,
wherein Figure 1 shows a front elevation. Figure 2 shows an edge view with the blade in position for sharpening. I
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken through the handle.
Figure 4 shows an outer end view.
Figure 5 shows an edge view with the blade in position for shaving and Figure 6 is a fragmentary rear view.
Referrin now more particularly to the drawing, w erein like numerals of reference designate similar-parts in each of the fig u'res the numeral 1 designates the handle, one end of whichis formed with a substantially rectangular head 2, whose outer surface is convex and formed with an abrading coat 3of suitable sharpening material.
The handle is slitted lengthwise, as at-4, and this slit is formed into the twospaced, transverse bearings 5 and 6. At one edge the head has the short end extensions, or fingers 7, 7, andat its other edge the head has similarly disposed end extensions which are retracted forming the catches 8, 8 and the respective ends of the head have the aligned notches 9, 9. 4
There is a frame designated generally by the numeral 10. This fra'me has the side arms 11, 11 on opposite sidesof the handle,
States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar .and
ured to the hen formed of'two ply metal whose 1 and which are connected by the crossrod 12, adapted to work or 6.
The free ends of these arms are configass around the respective ends of and their extreme ends are inwardly turned forming studs 13, 13.
There is a blade holder 14, preferably free ed es coincide'and fit closel together forming jaws 15, 16, between w ich the blade 17 is mserted. The blade has erforations 18 and one jaw is formed with etents 19 which fit through said perforations and into opposdepressions or recesses in the other aw.
in either bearing 5 other edge of'the holder is formed cylindrical to provide a bearing 20'into whoseends the studs .13' fit.
In use for shaving urposes, the cross rod 12 is located in the caring 6, with the side arms 11 resting in the respective end notches 9 and with the ends of the operative edge of the blade engaged under the catches 8. In this position the razor may be safely used for shaving.
When it desired to sharpen the blade the frame is grasped and pul ed outwardly to carry the cross rod 12 into the bearin .5. The op osing sides of the handle are flexible and Wlfi yield, or bend, outwardly to permit this movement, .and will spring back together when the cross rod is seated in said bearing. The ends of the blade holder ma now be rasped and the blade swun bac and forth with its edge in contact with the abrading surface 3. The inner sides'of the arms 11, have the notches 21, 21 which receive the respective ends of the head during this swinging movement. The sharpened ed e of the bladeis held out of contact with t e edges of the head, at the end of each stroke, in sharpening, by the fingers 7, and catches 8.-
When the blade is sharpened the frame maybe forcedback to original position, with disengage the ends of the head therefrom to erm1t this movement of the frame, the Blade ends may be new again engaged under the catches 8 with the side arms in the end notches 9 and the razor will be again in osition for shaving.
hat I claim is 1. A razor including a handle formed with spaced bearings, a head carried by one end thereof \whose outer side is convex, a
frame capable of vmovement into either of said bearings, and formed with side arms, a
' saidholder, said head having end bearings in which saidarms are adapted to'seat.
, 3. A razorincluding a handle formed withspaced bearings, a head carriedby one end ther edge of blade holder mounted between said arms, a blade mounted in and detachable from said holder.
' 2. -A razor 'including' 'a handlefjformed' with spaced bearings, a. head carried by one end thereof whose outer side is convex, a frame capable of movement into e ther of said bearin and formed with side-arms,
a blade hol er mounted between said, arms, a. blade mounted in and detachable from catches carried by one edge of the head and adapted to receive the respective ends of the operative edge of the blade.
4. A' razor includinga handle formed with s aced bearings a head carried by one end 0 the handle whose-outer surface is convex, spacedfingers carried by one edge of the head spaced hooks. carried b the the head, a frame forme with side arms and a cross rod, said 'cross rod being adapted to seat in either of said hearings, a blade holder pivotally mounted between said arms, a blade carried by said holder.
5. A razor including a handle formedwith spaced bearings, a head carried by onev end of the handle Whose outer surface is convex, spaced fingers carried by one edge of the head, 'spaced hooks carried by the other edge of the head, a frame formed with side armsand a cross rod, said cross rod being adapted to seat in either of said bearings,
a blade holderpivotally mounted between said arms, a blade carried by said holder,
said head having end notches provided to receive said arm-s and lock the blade edge in engagement with said books.
6. A razor including a handle, a head carried by one end thereof whose outer side 1s convex, a frame carried by the-handle, a
blade holder mounted in the frame, a blade in "said holder, said frame being adjustable into two ositions relative to the handle,.
hooks carried by one edgeof the head, said frame, when in one position being adapted to swing back and forth relative to the head, and when in its position being adapted to hold the blade edge in engagement with said hooks.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name.
