To all 't0/wm t may concer/1a f Be it known that I, CLIFTON CriisHoLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Iniprovementin Mechanism for Assembling Printing Strips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
- This invention relates to assembling printing members in the nature of embossed strips upon a suitable holder orchase, and the general object is to provide a simple eilieieiit mechanism capable of quickly positioning sucli embossed strips upon the chase and for advancing the strip holder quickly to present successive lines for additional strips.'
An example of the use of'this invention is in conjunction with a part ofthe device shown, described and claimed in the application of William John Demn'iing, Serial No. 583,192, filed October 241, 1922. The present invention includes an improvement or addition to said Deniming machine, whereby I am readily enabled to removably support a flexible printing form, which I term a blanket or chase, having -raised projections adapted to receive the embossed strips and carry the same about an arcuate segment. Such a segiiient may correspond in general dimensions with the drum of a multigrapli, whereby the blanket or chase when carrying the strips may be placed about the multigraph drum or any similar device, to print the mattei' carried thereby'. More specific object/s include the convenient arrangement of a segment adjacent to the means feradvancing the embossed strips thereto from the embossing machine, and for convenient advancing or turning of the segment to present successive lines opposite the channel from which the embossed strips are deliv- A further object is to provide a simple device for accurately aligning the strip holders on the blanket with the channel for leading ythe strips thereto by means coacting with each strip holder as it is presented to the channel, whereby accuracy of alignment of the channel with the successive strip holding means is assured.
The above and other objects will become more apparent in connection with the l'ol- 'i lowing description which relates to the drawings and the essential characteristics are summarized in the claims.

Referring to the drawings by the use of reference characters, I Will first describe the operation of the essential 'parts the Demniiiig mechanisml referred to with whichv my invention is here shown as associated; l indicates the end of'a frame of a suitable embossing machine for making the type characters on strips or ribbons of metal and forming laterally turned iangesby-which they may be held on the printing form. Mounted on this end frame'l isa main frame for a longitudinal slide bracket 5, and a bracket 6 foiming bearings for hand operated lever 10 which through gearing, to be described presently, operates aflever 20 whichv moves the slidealong the slide frame 5 to operate the type strip engaging hooky 25, another'strip advancing means moving rier. Y Y y Instead of the vertical slide bracket-such as shown in the Demming application referred to, for carrying fiat plates or the like, l provide an extension 7 on the main frame carrying a bearing bracket 8 for a shaft 30 on which the type carrying segment 35 is mounted. In the Demining mechanism. the'embos'sed strips are' moved along a guide the strip along the channel toward the car-4 indicated aty 4, to a pair of rolls-9 mounted on shafts 11 and driven in unison by means of a pair of meshing spur gears 12, while one of these shafts is driven from a suity able source of power, not shown.
v`The rolls 9 are formed with pairs ot opposed flanges, one pair being adapted to engage the forward sides of the strip outside of the Zonek of the type and the other being adapted to engage the rearwardly turned flanges of the strip.

2) with which cooperates a hook 16 on a the hand. lever and lever 20. This hand lever 10 is shown as geared to a pinion 31. and 'gear 32 on a short shaft rigid with the lever 20, these gears being enclosed by a suitable cover 34. The lever is connected by a link 36 to the slide 110 as shown by the shoulder 25?1 or" the hook 25.

Accordingly, when the slide 110 is moved itrocks the sha'f't 26 and the hook 25 it carries to the limit of its movementA and then shoves the slide along its slideway 5 so' that the'hook 25a may come into position to engage the left hand end of the delivered strip.
As the strip progresses through the rolls 9 and passes freertheretrom it stands in a channel 15 in a position where its end may be engaged by the hook 16. A movement fof the levers 10 and 2O then actuates the slide 49 moving it to the left and swinging the lever 18 moving the slide 17 and hook 16 to bring the` strip along the channel 15 to a position whereit may be engaged Subsequent reverse `position of the levers 10 and 2O moves the slide 40 to the right, delivering the strip from the'guide way 15 and positioning it upon the-chase or carrier as shown in the drawings.
Fig. 4 shows at 25b a hook, a right hand extension or" the lever 25. This hook is useful to shove the strip in the segment backwardly to properly position it, the hook tending to swing toward the segment when the hand lever is .operated in the reverse direction and thus being adapted to come into position to engage the right hand end 'particularly concerned,

However, this is a special operation, and, normally on the backward movement of the arm 25 the hook 25b is idle, being prevented from engaging the strip bythe position of the eccentric 118, Fig. 8, on the lower end of the rock shaft 119 carrying a positioning arm 120, this eccentric occupying a slot 121 in the bar 113..
l l will now describe the arrangement with which the present invention is more namely, the segmental carrier and type holder or chase and means for operating it in conjunction with a portion of the Demming mechanism above described.
The segment 35 is preferably constructed to form a partially cylindrical surface carried on a radial arm 38 integral with the bearing member 39 which is securedto the shaft 30.- This shalt as previously stated is carried by a bracket 8 on an extension 7, the bracket having bearing members positioning the shaft 30 and therefore the center o't' rotation of the segment and at the same height and therefore normal to the strip channel 15. rlfhe chase or blanket, as stated7 is of a flexible nature andl prefer to make it as shown wherein the blanket designated is provided with raised ribs 61 from which are punched partially circular projections in a plane parallel with the general surface of the sheet thereby forming overhanging portions 62 in aligned series or rows, whereby the flanges S1 of the strips may engage and securely hold the strips in placeupon the blanket without interferingv with the flexibility. As shown the segment 55 is provided near one edge with a rail and its convez; surface is covered by a plate titi on which rests the flexible blanket 60, which blanket shown as having an :inwardly turned edge or iiange 64 adapted to hook over the erge or the rail.
To position this flexible strip carrying sheet, 1 may use suitable removable clips at the opposite edges ot the sheet securely holding 'it -in close contact with the drum while allowing ready removal. As the embossed strips or lines are posi@ ltioned upon the blanket, it is desirable to advance the segment and chase one or more lines and accurately position the iiexible l may take advantage of the overhang to` project a latch plunger having'y a beveled nose into the groove formed by the ribs 61 which by reason of the formation off-the type holding projections 62 are accurately central thereof. Upon release. however,v the spring causes the dog to engage the segment as shown in Sand by the dotted line position in Fig, 1n this engaging position an upward movement of the handle 96 and lever 95 causes a corresponding movement ofthe segment 35.

The combination with means for delivering printing members in .the form of strips having inwardly turned flanges, a guideway and means for moving said strips along said guideway, a curved printing form adapted to be used on a Irotary press and on which such strips may be removably carried, means for moving the strips onto the printing form from the guideway, and means for turning the form about vits axis to present an unoccupied space to receive the strip. j
14. A guidewayadapted for slidably supporting printing strips, a curved printing' form having strip carrying means therefor, means for 'supporting the printing form and turning it about its axis to bring said strip carrying' means into alignment with said guideway,and means for shoving the strips lengthwise thereof from the guideway onto the form.
15. The combination with embossed strips each having a single row of characters, of delivery rolls adapted to form inwardly turned flanges on the strips, a. rotary printing form having projections for receiving said flanges to mount the strip thereon, a guideivay and means for mounting the printing form, said means being rotatable to present said form in alignment with said guideway.

The combination with means for-*delivering embossed printing strips, of a segmental holder, a flexible blanket adapted to be mounted thereon and provided with rows of projections to receive the strips, means for moving the strips onto the blanket, and means arising a step by step movement of the form about the axis of the segment.

21. The combination with a printing holder having raised projections connected by corrugated portions of a positioning device adapted to engage successive corrugations.
