HOLDER. on surroar' FOR BRAKE GEARS] 1 Application filedAughst 5, '1925. Serial No. 48,430..
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, SVEN JULIUs STRID,
a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful I1nprovements in a Holder or Support for Brake Gears, of which the following is a full,
clear, andexact description, such as will enable others to make and use the same. 1 My present inventionurelates to a holder or support for brake gearings for railway cars andhas more particular. reference .to a device that is so constructed that the take up .chain may ;be prevented accidentally is slipping ofi the winding drum and thus rendering the gear useless.
The means for holding. or supporting the gears as a unit consists of top and bottom castings that are connected together with the gears between them, and the bottom casting is provided with an extension. or arm on which the winding drum or Windlass is rotatably mounted and there are horns or lateral extensions projecting from each side.
of the arm alongside the drum which are so located that the take-up chain will ride thereon when slackened and will thereby be prevented from slipping off the drum.
I prefer to carryout my invention and accomplish the divers objects thereof in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being herein made to the accompanying drawings that form a part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation of a break gear unit showing an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan of the bottom member of the structure detached from the other parts of the unit. I
Figure 3 is a vertical end elevation of the member shown in Fig. 2 and illustrating the disposition of the horns.
The drawings, which illustrate a typical or preferred embodiment of my invention, are in a sense merely schematic for the purpose of illustration, and in said drawings similar reference characters have been employed to designate like parts wherever the same appear throughout the several views.
The top member of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings is adapted for attachment to the end-sill of the rail- .versely adjacent its ends 10 and has an up- :7;
way. car and consists of a horizontal disposed plate 5 that has its ends provided with depending'fianges 6, and intermediate one of its longitudinal edges this plate is provided with a "tapered extension 7, so that when the member is connected to the under portion of the end-sill the-plate and its extension. willproject upon opposit-e sides of the sill. The plate and its extensions are provided with bearing bosses ,8- to receive the adjacent ends of the respective shafts or spindles upon which the gear elements are mounted, V The bottom member of the'unit illustrated in Fig.1 of the drawings is preferably. an .7 integral casting and the detailsthereof are disclosed in Figs 2 and 3, wherein it will be seen, the same consists of an elongated plate 9 that is somewhat widened transstanding flange 11 at each .end edge, The plates 5 and 9 are preferably positioned opposite eachother in spaced planes/with the respective flanges 6 and 11 overlapping and riveted to each other whereby the two members are securely maintained in assembly as will be seen in Figure 1. The plate 9, mediate its ends, is provided with a-bracket arm 12 formed integrally therewith and extended therefrom to provide a bearing boss 13 in vertical alinement with the boss in the extension 7 Of the top member, This bracket arm 12 is disposed in a horizontal plane below and parallel with the plane of the plate 9 and itis connected with the latter by an oblique web or throat '14. A winding drum or Windlass 15, having a lateral rim flange 16 and chain anchor 17, is interposed between the hub of the adjacent gear element and the bracket arm so that, when the gear is operated tn apply or 7 release the brake, the chain is wound or unwound either on or off the drum. After the tension or power has been released the chain will become slack between the anchor Y 17 and its opposite end, and therefore is liable to become dismantled from the drum to an extent'that will render the gear inoperative when it is attempted to apply the brakes. To prevent this contingency arising I have provided lateral horns 18 that extend outwardly and transversely to the bracket arm, and the outer portions of the horns are curved in an upward direction as shown in Figue 3 of the drawings i so that should the chain accidentally become dislodged from the rim flange, 16 of the drum this inclined portion will cause the cham torgravitate back to 1ts normal .01.
