'f SVEN JULIUS'-srriun,l fory .eHIQAGQ-anigrnors Assieme. `fue v i f f...cHIcAGo;ILLINo|Is.
FItED MA'rHWs, l"or l State" vvof. "Illinois, i'i'ited States of 'f'clear,l Yfand" exact description; 'such *las* 'will enable others"5 sl'zilled'lin thev y"arti tomake 'and' sliaitfat" a corner lof'the caifand mount the 'is ajnairow' platforinforiledefrom which anhapronvort irre alzlsleet I structure is rather too flimsy and u-nsebureE lto withstandthe heavy service demanded of' afbra'le" gearing "and its mounting and I have, therefore, devised a structure .which reinforces the corner portion of 'the car 5, 19,25. serial-No. 48324.
Referring 'sismo-1 Figre@ 3, it Wint be seen the end of the'carlbb'dy -isl avertical *wall 5i havingf-afZ'Jshap'ed platel secured to 'the *outer `face theieof-,wsalidfplate being so lower end with` the winding gearsflhese G0 body adjacent the brake gear by means of under the car. Adjacent its outer edge vthe an oblique angle beam extending from an end to a side of the car and to which the brake gear housing is secured. Further details of the structure will appear in the following description.
I prefer to carry out my invention and accomplish its divers objects by means of the structure hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings that form a part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is av top plan of one corner of a railway car, showing the application of my improvements thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical elevation of the lower portion and one end of the railway car, as illustrated in Figure 1, the view illustrating an end elevation of my invention.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal side elevation of my improvements and illustrating a fragmentary portion .of the end of the side of the car,
plate 12 is provided with a strap or upstanding abutment 14 that is suitably braced 'or reinforced by transverse websl and which is disposed against the lower portion of the apron 8, so that`the body of the plate 12 extends under the apron 8 and upon both sides of the latter.
In the fabrication of the car body a longitudinally extending side sill 15 has been provided, which is an angle bar of L-shaped section with the flange disposed lowermost. This sill, however, is not in a position, at its adjacent end to brace .the gear housing by itself and I, therefore, provide an oblique L-shaped angle bar 16 that is placed with its lateral flange lowermost andk resting upon the flange of the longitudinal sillv 15, and said ybrace 16 extends forwardly and obliquely towards the center line of the car to and adjacentthe apron 8, where Vit is secured toan L-shaped bracket 17 that is riveted or otherwise secured to the inner face of the depending apron 8. The disposition .of this oblique brace 16 is such that the end 0f the tapered l y below the longitudinal sill and is securedV lll portion 13 of the top plate 12 of the housing terminates below the lateral flange ofl plate 12 is also below the flange of the vbrace 16 and is secured thereto by a rivet 19, while the opposite corner of this plate is thereto by the rivet 20.
From the foregoing, it will be seen the gear housing is securelyk braced against the pull ofthe winding chain or -operating bar by means of the oblique brace 16 and the depending apro-n 8 is reinforced against the stressv which may be exerted by the abutment 14 which is bolted or riveted to the apron to provide a rigid structure.
What I claim is: 1. Means for mounting a bralreY gear, comprising a car body provided with a depending member at the end thereof, a longitudinal side-sill, an obliquely disposed vangle-bar connected at its forward end to the depending member at a distance ,fromy the corner of the car body and-secured at its opposite end tov said longitudinal sill,
and a gear housing, the upper member of which is provided with an inwardl extension secured to saidoblique brace and has an abutment arising in front of said depending member intermediate the adjacent end of the brace and the corner of the carA body.
2. Means for mounting. a brake gear, comprising a longitudinal side-sill, an obliquely disposed angle-bar connected at one end to said sill back from the end of transverse member at the end of the car and secured thereto.
3. Means for mounting a brake gear, comprisinga longitudinal side-sill, a depending member extending transversely at the end of the car, an angle bracket secured vto and projecting inwardly from the inner face of said depending member, an obliquely disposed angle-bar connected at its forward end to said angle bracket and at its opposite end secured to said side-sill, a vgear housing having a top-plate extending under said depending member and secured to said oblique angle-bar, and an abutment arising from said housing and secured to said depending member.
4. Means for mounting a brake gear, comprising a longitudinal side-sill, a'depending member extending transversely at the end Lof the car, a brace disposed yoblique to said sill and secured thereto, said brace at its opposite end connected to said depending member, and a gear housing connected to said depending member and extended inwardly to and secured to stud-brace.V
Signed at Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, this 28th day of July, 1925.
