Description

Patented ct. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES THEODORE RIVARI), OF NEWIPORT, VE=RMO1\TT.
RERAILER.
Application led January 21, 1925.
To @Zlio/10m 'it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, TI-rnononn ltivAnD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Orleans and State of `Jermont, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Rerailers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rerailing trains, cars, and the like which have run off of theirl rails and contemplates the provision of a novel form of rerailing device which` may bring back the wheels or rerail them upon either side of the rail.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of securing means included thereon whereby the rerailing means may be positioned over a rail and secured thereto so that the device may not move in advance of the wheels when the same are engaged therewith.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention furthe-r includes the following novel features and details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a section of a railroad track showing a pair of the rerailing devices attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the railroad track showing` the invention applied.
Figure 3 is a similar view of the reverse side of the invention applied.
Figure fl is a transverse section taken on line 4 4 of Figure 1, and showing the clamping means.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, and referring especially to Figure 1 ofthe drawings, there is shown a pair of companion rerailers which are right and left hand respectively, whereby cars or locomotives derailed upon either side of the track may again be brought back to their original track, and for purposes of illustration the numeral 10 indicatesthe portion of a railroad track which includes a pair of rails.
There is clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings as indicated in the aforegoing, a pair of companion members which are adapted to bring the wheels of the cars or locomotives back to their original track and for purposes of illust "ation, the right and left companion rerailers are designated 11 and 12 `Serial No. 3,835.
respectively, the right rerailing member including in cross section an arcuate shaped body portion which includes a raised flange portion 13 which is adapted to engage the inner side of the wheel flange and owing to the inward inclination of the same, the said wheel and far will be guided toward the rail. It is to be particularly noted in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, that the lower ends of the members 11 and 12 are slotted as at 14 and 15 respectively whereby the same may receive the upper portion 4or head of a rail therethrough and whereby the said lower curved portions of the members may lie flush with the upper side of their ailroad tie upon both sides of the rail. This slotted portion is shown as at 14 in Figure l of the drawing upon boththe right and left hand rerailing members. It is of course obvious that both of the right and left hand rerailing members are constructed nearly alike, the only di'erence between the two is the reverse order of the upstanding arcuatel shaped portions 13 which extend in opposite directions upon the sides of the track while their inner edges, which have upsta-nding flanges 15 thereon, extend in opposite direc tions. y
In order to clearly illustrate the securing means of the right and left hand rerailers, the opposite end of the rerailer is substantially reduced and carries thereon a pair of downwardly extending attaching flanges 16 which extend upon both sides of the head of a rail and have set screws 17 extending transversely therethrough and engaging the intermediate portion of the rail and further including within and between the attaching flanges 16 upwardly and inwardly inclined portions 1S which snugly receive the tapered head of the rail whereby the railer may not cant sidewaysv and cause the wheels to slip off of the rerailer while travelling thereon.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:
A rerailing device of the character de scribed comprising an arcuate shaped longitudinally slotted body portion, the body portion being substantially Vshaped in length and having upstanding flanges provided on the side thereof and terminating at the reduced port-ion thereof, alpairof attachways when the wheels 'are in engagement lng flanges extending downwardly from the therewith, and securingmeans extendlng 10 opposite sides of the reduced portion and rethrough 'the attaching flanges whereby the ceivng the heads of a rail therein, the upper same may be held securely to the reduced portion of the reduced portion having an inportion of a rail for the purpose set forth. ner wall upwardly and inwardly inclined so I In testimony whereof I afliX my signature. as to snugly receive the head of a rail wherev by the rerailing device will not cant side- THEODORE RIVARD.
